There is definitely too much emphasis on romances by people who don't like romances.

There are a bigger focus on romance in Bioware games than most, if not all other RPG's, but I still don't think it is too focussed to the detriment of the game. My husband normally plays through romance-free or will follow a romance through, without giving two figs about it, and enjoys the game. However, I freely admit to basing *my* playthroughs around the romance. But that's me and that's the reason I like the game. I like games where I can make my own (female) character and chose who to romance. I'm sure I'm not alone in this line of thinking :)

No there's not too much emphasis on romance.
Forums will obviously focus on characters as these relationships are very personal to the experience and also solid things we know about the game.
The plot is still rather hazy and hard to get your teeth into. Once it launches there will no doubt be a ton of focus on quests.

So to reiterated. Is romance a little too focused on as appose to the larger picture of the game the adventuring the combat and such?

No. That won't happen.

I'd also say that I've trekked through Bioware games many times, without my protagonist finding any romance, because of the role-play decisions that comes with it.

While some people may recognize me as no friend of DA2, I do think that was actually one of the improvements they made in DA2 (opening up more possibilities with the "Hawke-sexuality").

This likely has already been said, but a large section of the Dragon Age fandom are here for the romance specifically. Literally every interview you come across with the DA staff has the question of Romance come up, which should also point out how popular it is. I, for one, am in Dragon Age solely for the story and romance. I always play on the easiest level so I can go through games multiple times in order to play the various stories.

There is way too much emphasis on romance.

People won't shut up about how much they don't care about it.

To cater romance for every sexual is a nightmare. Straight male and female, gay, lesbian. I don't see bisexual as a big problem as the same dialogue is applicable for both gender. Why pursued this in the first place? In my opinion, having romance for both male and female are sufficient. This is a problem when you try to please too many people and may end up with a subpar game (which i honestly hope it's not the case).

Having romance for male and female? But which ones? usually it is always straight people who are catered to. Almost every single time. And for that not to be the case there are 2 options. 1) All Bi romance options or 2) Multiple sexualities

And the game wont suffer for their being multiple sexualities. They don't take out of combat to make romances or scratch an adventure. What will probably happen since romances are probably in the same budget is,  the romances will be more broad and less deep, like ME2, that is if they were not given more priority since they are adding set sexualities. But the game is not going to suffer for it. And men and women are being paid attention to. Just not only straight men and women.

I honestly like that romance will be available for all gender be it male, female, gay or lesbian. Wouldn't this solve the problem without everyone fighting each other? But i don't think so the author of the characters agree.

Maybe it's just me,personally I consider this as some sort of cheating to one's real life mate. But since romances in each game are completely optional,I don't mind at all.

Video game characters are fictional, and more to the point my player characters are not me. It's no different than reading a book with a romantic subplot in it, or watching a movie, except that I control one of the characters involved.

READ THIS POST PEOPLE !

People should understand that from the few things that actually are natural and were part of us since day one (remember the Adam dude?) is the ability to love/attract one another. This is why we survived as a species because we lover/fecked each other hell of a lot and is part of our animal nature. It is not even 100% true that we are carnivors and we should kill other living things, but the one thing that we KNOW for sure we are supposed to do as individuals and as society is making sweet, sweet love and interact within each other, because this is how we survived all this time and many species did not.

Now i leave it to you to decide if recreating the most basic and vital thing there is on this world - too much. This is the primary quest/mission of our lifetime and all other things are side quests.

I don't know if BioWare is too focused on Romance, but I think the community as a whole MAY be.

Agreed.

No. I think it's fine. It doesn't negatively affect people who aren't into that since it's totally optional. Is it the only thing I play the game for? Not at all. Dragon Age is made up of many different things. The first time I played Dragon Age: Origins I didn't know there were romances in the game at all but it later became something I'd rather have than not have.

BioWare have hardly mentioned it. It's the community that goes crazy whenever the words "romance" or "love interest" are brought up in conversation.

Pretty much this.

A dev mentions something vaguely romance-related before moving on to other aspects of the game, and its the romance-related topic that will dominate discussion on the forums.

"Is there too much emphasis on romance?"

If you're asking whether BioWare and/or the fanbase spend too much attention to something so trivial and unrelated to the main plot, then yes, there is too much emphasis on romance.

BSN romance fiends are ok I guess so long as you're not downwind of them or their threads.

I think It might feel like there is somewhat of an emphasis on romance right now because it is one of the features that has been brought up and is supposedly evolved from it's DAO & DA2 predecessors, so its being kind of singled out along with the mounts and fortresses. Once the finished product is released romance will probably be about as significant as the color shoes and style of hat your inquisition decides to wear, meaning you can make it as important as you want it to be.

Though the mere fact that the option exists to simply spam gifts to someone until they worship the ground you walk on does enable and encourage playing the game in a way that I, quite frankly view as wrong.

Exactly!

I'll never forget the time I saved the Anvil with Wynne in my party. She told me she would never forgive me, but she was singing a very different tune after 4 bottles of wine.

Bioware has the good sense not to base their game around romances.

Are we the fanbase obsessed with romance? Juuuuust a little. But if a player plays DA only for the romances they are idiots and are better off playing a dating sim.

It's funny how romance content is the only one that gets these kind of threads.

No one ever comes out and says that Bioware should stop making dwarves a playable race because DAO statistics clearly show that only a small percent of players play dwarves and Bioware should make more content for other races that "everyone" could enjoy instead ;)
