Is there too much emphasis on Romance?

This, in the case of DA just delete the sci-fi.  I don't generally play RPG's where I can't create a character of my own gender, race choice is a bonus, it's probably why I've played so many MMO's over the years, BioWare make it that much better. Any other RPG tends to feel so damn lonely now..we've been spoiled with awesomeness.  I still play other RPG's with a gender choice of course, I'm playing Skyrim again atm...but, it's just so...lonely.

Glad I am not the only one to feel this way. After ME1 regular RPG's are really hard to go back to, the friendships, the romance, the bromance, mods help to an extent but I find myself dragging around followers in Skyrim and theyare so flat and lifeless.  Some of the more recent follower mods are inspired by Bioware NPC's as far as banter, interaction and character growth but you are right Bioware spoils us in this respect.  I also only play games where I can play a female character, the last game I played that was male only was Fable the Lost chapters. My brother turned me on to Mass Effect by rolling up a femshep and letting me choose all the dialogue options while he did all the fighting.  we played for several nights and finished the first of the 4 main missions before I tried it out myself. I bought DAO because I was so head over heels in love with all the NPC's and the romance was such a novel addition to the game.  DAO blew that aspect out of the water when AListair dumped my Elf Mage when she spared Loghain.  I laughed and cried because my heart felt broken and yet it was just a video game it was so silly to react to it like I did. That was when I knew Bioware was unique.  As long as Bioware continues the tradition of good story, NPC's that wrap themselves around your heart and the romances I will more than likely at the very least always get their titles on sale.  Other games are too lonely.  That was why I still replay almost all my bioware games but only ran through Diablo 3 twice

I'm currently dragging around Vilkas who I married, Marcurio (that his name?), one of those new voiced companions from a mod (who never shuts up!) and two dogs, all to try and quell some of those feelings lol. It helps a tiny bit, but...yeah...

I don't really have a problem with D3 luckily, I think because it's a different kind of game.

Here on the forums? Yes, there should really be a separate forum for it, imo.  As far as the actual games go, it's a tiny part of the game that is inconsequential and completely ignorable, aside from the opportunity for it being presented, as it should be.

This pretty much sums it up.

Well said.

There has yet to be a Bioware game that I'm aware of where romancing one of the companion characters wasn't optional, or where the romance was heavily tied to the main plot. They are all optional and fall into the realm of side content. As such, any argument that the devs have spent too much time or energy on them doesn't really hold up, IMO.

The fans might quite often give them more attention than they deserve, but I don't think that has been the case with the development team.

Some people disagree with that one (see Isabela, Anders, Morrigan and Alistair).

All of those characters have involvement with the main plot, but not their romance arc specifically. You can avoid romancing all of them and it has absolutely no impact on the main plot of their respective games.

The strongest case would probably be Bastila for male characters, and even then it was optional.

Honestly whoever at BW came up with the idea of integrating a romance system into the companions, as seen in DA/ME, is a damn genius.

Romance adds a whole other dimension to how you perceive the storyline and the characters. It's an element of character interaction that other games don't have. I'd even say it's an element of customization, by picking who is the lover of your hero. It's one of many components that help make the gaming experience even more memorable and entertaining, and a unique one at that.

It's really a no-brainer why Bioware fans go nuts over it.

No? The games make them optional story content and you can avoid it on the forums by not clicking romance threads and not caring about romance.

Yeah, people who get all worked up over fans who care about romance make no sense to me. If you don't like it, avoid it. Love yourself.

Romances in Bioware games are a welcomed option. Option.

Romances are a great addition to the game, though sometimes I get the opinion some people wish bioware would make a whole game a love story.

IMO you should be able to look at your companions and see the person whom you want to romance. Romance is an addition to the story, but it is a realistic addition. It is unrealistic to be involved with multiple people and not feel something for your companions.

Romance should always be THERE but should always be an addition to the story. All that role play and what-not.

While having the option to romance your companions is a fine thing, I have to ask if anyone else thinks that there may be too much focus on a specific part of the game.

Would someone who doesn't want to romance for a play through suffer for not doing so? Do people see the combat and adventure..the main focus of the game to begin simply see it as annoying filler between your romance scenes?

So to reiterated. Is romance a little too focused on as appose to the larger picture of the game the adventuring the combat and such?

I play Bioware games since Baldur's Gate and romances always gave the impression of just minor addition to the storyline. Actually I would like for relationships/romances to be bigger part of the story. It is easily noticable that the combat and adventure is the main focus therefore I completely don't understand your concerns.

First Baldur's Gate was a great game for me and I loved adventure in this gorgeous fantasy world as well as engaging battles. Yet it is Baldur's Gate 2 which gave me truly emotional connections to this experience. And it is because companions felt far more alive with their personality, stories and goals. Romances are part of these interactions. However it is still relatively small part.

I am fan of all what Bioware games represent. I play for adventure, engaging battles, character customisation, world exploration, fascinating storyline and also for companions interaction and romances. And I hope that Bioware will not give up any of those vital aspects of their brilliant games.

I've been arguing that for years, but there are still people who insist that being able to become queen to Alistair's king means the romance is the true romance of the game. Or that being in a relationship with Morrigan with the dark ritual mean it's is part of the main quest. Both romance are not only optional, the dark ritual is offered even if Morrigan left the party earlier in the game and in case of Alistair it is even limited to a single gender/race/origin combo.

It's worst with DA2 too, Isabela is an optional companion, you don't even have to recruit her...

My Warden romanced Alistair, got dumped by him when he became Queen and then refused the Dark Ritual just so he'd die horribly. She then went insane and ended up stabbing Morrigan in Witch Hunt. I refuse to believe any other path is the true romance.

After Alistair dumped her she had a thing with Zevran for a while, by which I mean 'the journey on the road between Denerim and Redcliffe.'

I agree.

I got spoiled since my first real introduction to SP games was DAO. (and I didn't know a thing about the romances....so imagine my surprize when the underwear scene started up!) I've tried to like other SP games (not into shooters at all). But I really like what BW does with a game storyline (and being able to make choices) and the companions. The romances are like getting extra cherries on top of a hot fudge sundae, they are awesome to have, but not necessary to to the overall plot.

Although I still play D3 since I can play with friends from across country and talk via bluetooth in game. (the one game I like playing a mage in).
