This is all the backgrounds I can think of, like literally all of them regardless of their existence in the game. We already had some of them which I indicated.

Human:

Noble (DA:O)

Peasant (DA2, could also be an apostate)

Chasind/Barbarian (Not used)

Circle (DA:O, was former noble Amell)

Elf:

City (DA:O)

Dalish (DA:O, could not be mage)

Circle (DA:O)

Elven apostate/Dalish Mage (Not Used)

Dwarf:

Commoner (DA:O)

Noble (DA:O)

Surface Dwarf (Not used)

Qunari is confirmed to be Vashoth (not part of Qun religion, philosophy or whatever)

So apparently we are a surface dwarf in Inquisition which is nice. Its a new background. Dalish is nothing new except we can be a mage. I would love to be a Chasind/Barbarian as human but I think its unlikely, we are noble again I think. (though in case of mage it could be different, here is to hoping).

Are all the backgrounds confirmed?

Dwarf is of House Cadash, so could either be from Orzammar or a surfacer since the Thaig is long gone.

Pretty sure the elf can only be Dalish.

Human is the one I'm not really sure of, but I think they're a merc.

I must admit this is something I'd really like information on.   Before I start playing I like to invent a little back story for my character if I haven't been given one already.   Obviously with Origins and DA2 that wasn't necessary.   I thought it was only an elf mage that had to be Dalish.   Is it warrior and rogue as well?    Surely not all humans will be mercs?   I was rather hoping we might get something to fill in the background of characters like we did with Commander Shepard.   So there were 3 basic origin scenarios and then 3 biographical details.   Except in this case it would be more:

Human: Noble or Commoner      Mage: Circle or Apostate

Elf:        Dalish  or City                Mage: Dalish

Dwarf:  Noble or Castless

Any particular reason to think that?

Something niggling in my head from past mention. Of course I could just be blurring it with the Qunari background.

Can't wait for Dalish Necromancer Inquisitor! Everything that has transpired has done so according to my design.

Elves are Dalish

of the confirmed

Human likely are Soldier or Noble.

Human Mage is likely a circle or apostate

Dwarves are likely Nobles or Warrior Caste of Orzammar.
Or Carta members .

are my guesses havent been much talj about the human or dwarf

Please, where was it confirmed that all elf classes could only be Dalish?    Don't get me wrong, I find the Dalish interesting but I got a lot more mileage out of the city elf origin in DAO.

The mercenary reference had to be Iron Bull.   That made sense because most of the Kossith we have met outside of the Qun have been mercenaries and he is a Qun spy pretending to be Tal-Vashoth.   However, our Inquisitor Kosssith/Qunari is Vashoth, so are they mercenary too?

That leaves human and dwarf.   I will be disappointed if we are saddled with human being simply a mercenary.   Besides, why would they be at a peace conference if that was the case?      As for a human mage, I suppose they could just be limited to having formerly been in the Circle, gone on the run, recruited as a merc and then heard about the peace conference but it would be nice to have the alternative that they had always been part of say, the Mages Collective.

No City Elf option is still the worst news of Inquisition.  :crying:

I'm curious and hope no one takes offence, but what is the appeal of the city elf origin?

I LOVED the Dalish origin compared to the city elf origin.

If you some of you like it more could you give me a reason, I'd like to know why its so good?

Personally i didn't enjoy the fact of being a second class citizen, at least with the dalish you're mythical or a bit more special in some way, but that's IMO.

I thought the city elf origin was probably the best of the lot, but I also think it's the biggest stretch in regards to how the city elf was such a good combatant. So I don't mind them not doing a repeat.

As for the backgrounds in DAI, the human is most likely from Ferelden, given the last name. The fact that the human has a last name leads me to believe they're either nobility or that their family was once nobility.

I kinda want the human to be a noble again just so I can continue my tradition of playing human nobles for my first run.

I want to be a human noble again, I loved that origin in DAO. I have a feeling that Trevelyan is a minor bann of Ferelden. Also, I wouldn't call Hawke a peasant, more of a commoner.

I found the great bit about the city elf was that they were a second class citizen.   It was a lovely irony that the Hero of Ferelden was somebody that has no status whatsoever outside their own community (the dwarf castless was a similar case).   I played it first as a female so in addition to my friend being raped, I knew that they had tried to rape me.     They also killed my fiancée.     I loved the reaction from Alistair and Zevran when we returned to the alienage and this bit was revealed, particularly since Alistair had gone on and on about Duncan and I was never given the option to say that he wasn't the only one to have lost someone in violent circumstances.   Then you have the bit where you challenge Loghain over selling elves into slavery and his response.   Believe me, my girl was never going to spare him after that.

I never had a problem with how I became so proficient at fighting.   Life in the alienage is tough and since I made her a rogue, being handy with a pair of knives made sense.   She was never the type to back down and accept things meekly.

I would really have liked to be a city elf, so once again it was the despised  second class citizen who saves the world.    Given how much worse elves are treated in Orlais than in Ferelden, with Chevaliers using them as targets for training their recruits in the art of killing and no one giving a stuff about the injustice of an elf merchant being executed by a noble's guard until the elves start making a fuss about it, I think the irony would be even greater.     Even the Dalish don't give the city elves much regard, so it would one in the eye to them too for the despised "flat ear" to have saved their bacon as well.    In all the fuss about how mages are treated, people seem to forget that there is a much bigger group of people who are treated even worse.   I am also anxious to keep them out of the hands of the Qun, who seem to have made large inroads into infiltrating the city elf community and recruiting them, because they clearly realise their potential.   Now that would have made for some interesting exchanges with Iron Bull since it would have been possible for them to have met previously when he was on a recruitment drive.    But it would seem that none of this can happen and the only city elf playing a major role in the Inquisition is Sera.     So another potential character development is ruled out.  Oh well (big sigh).

I hope the human is from Nevara. The american accent we heard during the E3 demo sounded like he could have been.....

Wishful thinking probably :P But it would be a nice change from the usual "Human from Ferelden"

Doesn't Cyrion mention that your mom taught you to fight, anyway? And considering she was a Grey Warden hopeful... makes sense to me.

But yeah, I'm really interested to know more of our Inquisitor's possible backgrounds. Especially the dwarves- being from the same family as Shale.

Shale's been a golem for over a thousand years, so she's a pretty distant relative.
