I always listen to music when playing, so my mic isn't usually plugged in.
But if some people are talking about game mechanics or general stuff, I'll plug in and speak.
With friends, it depends - if they talk, I talk.

Mic on:
- playing with friends
- pugs saying thank you or being polite. I always respond to them in kind.
Mic off:
- pugging and nobody else is talking or they're having a conversation I want no part of
- playing with friends who I know have mics who aren't using them. that sh*t is corny, 5ive.
- friends talking about something I know nothing about. y'all can have dat.

Interesting perspectives all. Here in Europe, the chance of having several people in a game sharing a mutually intelligible language is relatively low, so the mic mostly stays off.
If people are talking I'm fine with that, but if they yell or have feedback or awful music playing, then I plug my headset in but leave the volume right down and the mike off.
Most of the time I am not interested in using the in game functionality, so I will not use it. With friends I use TeamSpeak.
I make exceptions occasionally in random games if something is getting completely out of hand.
I forgot to mention that I sometimes turn it on to politely remind PUGs to "Get in the ******" hack!!!".

If they are scorewh*ring elsewhere, I go to their location and use a missile to clean up all the enemies and get back to the hack.
On one such occasion, a pug started hurling insults at me - totally worth it ![]()
Always with friends
Never with randoms
50/50 during solos.
50/50 with friends-you mute a lot. But I know you are listening...
I never solo, but ditto.

I'm going to do this from now on ![]()
Thanx!
Shots fired!- playing with friends who I know have mics who aren't using them. that sh*t is corny, 5ive.
More shots fired! Lmao!- friends talking about something I know nothing about. y'all can have dat.
I always have my mic plugged in, I don't always talk but I have it plugged in anyway. If it's off it means that I'm having hardware issues. Only difference b/w when playing with friends and pugs when it comes to being on the mic- Voice activated with friends, push to talk with pugs.

Pretty much the same here.I just have to check what it's set to every day as well.
I have forgot to set it to push to talk a few times.I apologize to the general public for that, and you're welcome for the show . ![]()
I don't talk much and I'm usually playing by myself, so my mic is turned off.
I did try to be more social last year and I bought a mic and everything, but it didn't work out. I never knew what to say when I was in a party or people kept pushing me to talk and it just made me feel really uncomfortable. :/
Mic always on in "push to talk" mode but no one talks on PC in Pugs .
The occassional whinger or self appointed expert in stategy has a chat but they are usually ignored .
Its usually just a "thanks" if I get revived and the odd headbut and thats about it.
mic always plugged in and turned on
so everyone can hear the reggae music
Not exactly true reggae, but here's what came to mind:mic always plugged in and turned on
so everyone can hear the reggae music

I keep my mic off cause my kids are noisy.

What in game functionality is there? Please explain?
i don't have a mic. so that solves everything. however, in the long long ago when i had a working mic i only used it with fwendz.

I think he meant the in-game voip. I don't know how it is on consoles, but on PC It's influenced pretty heavily by lag and has a nasty tendency to randomly break up mid sentence. For me it's more of an annoyance but for some it's game breaking.
