The latest demo was awesome until I saw Sera's lifeless body being dragged by a demon. Damn. I won't let anyone die in my playthroughs. If possible.
Can we prevent certain deaths of companions?

Though it's possible that the choices made in that playthrough lead to the deaths of companions/followers.

I really doubt she is dead in that scene because:
-They wouldn't show an unavoidable companion death in a trailer
-Companion deaths are always dramatic and never just boop, they're dead
-Dorian says "we'll all die" instead of "we'll both die" (though Leliana might have been up still, I don't remember)
-That whole scene would be super dumb if Iron Bull and Sera die offscreen and no one really reacts much.

You don't actually see Iron Bull, there could be many possibilities, maybe even abandoning the Inquisitor in that moment if they're rivals.

Im pretty sure since they're in the fade, that her actual body wasnt harmed. He says they're at Redcliffe castle but my guess is that they needed to enter the fade version of the castle in order to catch that mage with the amulet

I'll tell you what's wrong, Sara is dead!
No, no she's just resting
Look matey, I know a dead companion when I see one and I'm looking at one now!
No no, just resting, remarkable companion, a norwegian blue elf.
No, that is what I call a dead companion.
No...no shes just stunned and is probably pining for the fjords.

I am sure she will wake up again after the fight is over with a fractured skull or a broken arm. With a possible penalty to dexterity and cunning.

Well according to a playthrough of some guy that is the result of some choices made by the player. Not going to spoil much more. But it would seem she is dead
He thought she was dead, It doesn't mean she was that was just his opinion. Allot of people here thought she was when they saw the demo but we were all still watching the same demo. The demo ends right after that part so we that person can't have had clarification of her death.

I didn't like how the game decide itself to kill Bethany if I play female, and kill what-so-face if I play male in DA2.
It was if you played mage or not mage, but I agree that just came off as arbitrary. There wasn't enough build up to make it effectively mean anything. Nothing like that this time, I think. I hope.
And it's a gameplay decision, not a story choice. That wasn't good.

Well, technically, it decided by your chosen class and not gender. If you were a mage, Bethany would die. If you were a rogue or warrior, Carver would die. That was for "balancing" purposes, so you didn't start the game with two mages (including yourself) or two non-mages (including yourself).

Also for story in Carver's case, so he can whine about being the only blade in a house of mages. Shut up Carver.
