Do I remember rightly that someone, somewhere said the revered mother would say she recognises the Cousland GW if you give her more than the 30 silver she deems appropriate to buy blessings?

I've never gotten anything of the sort, and I always give her five sovereigns on every one of my Wardens.
Though it always did bother me that if you didn't have that money, she acts really... douchey. It's one thing to reciprocate douchiness if you dish it out first, but if you say that you don't have that much she doesn't even say "Well if you come into that money, could you give it to us?". She just acts like you're an awful person in general.
I think. Been a while since I couldn't give her money.

I love threatening her. Morrigan and Alistair's responses are funny.

^There's a persuasion check for that, failing which will cause her to refuse to handover the key, even if the warden was a 'noble'.
It's persuade + the amount of donation, i.e, the more you grease her palm, the lower the persuade threshold.

Except for the very first time I played DAO, I never give her anything. I usually say I don't have anything to give. It's a lie, but I'm trying to save up my gold to buy some stuff later. When it comes to Sten, I either pick the lock on his cage myself if I'm a rogue, or I drag Leliana with me to the Revered Mother and have her persuade her to release Sten. Works every time, and I keep my money. I know, I'm a horrible person. ![]()

EDIT- 5, not 5000. I don't think even Reverend Mothers are that greedy.

If you tell her you don't have any money then she gets snooty about the fine armour and weapons you're carrying. Can't she sell some of her stuff? But yeah, I always take Lolly with me - have never tried picking the lock on Sten's cage. How much cunning etc you need for that?
And please - what is IIRC?

Yes, you can most definitely pick the lock on Sten's cage yourself and bypass the Revered Mother completely. I've done it many, many times. When you are looking at the cage, your cursor will either show "Sten" or "cage," depending on where you're aiming. Click on "cage," and if you're a rogue, you should pick the lock. You can have Leliana pick the lock as well by taking control of her.
I believe I usually have two points in the "lockpick" skill by then, but you may be able to do it with less (I know Leliana usually has two points in "lockpick" by this point as well). I'm not sure of the specific requirements. It's actually quite funny if you pick the lock yourself (or have Leliana do it), and then go talk to Ser Bryant or Ser Maron or the Revered Mother while Sten is with you. They get quite miffed at you for releasing him. ![]()
I've never had the Revered Mother chew me out for not giving her money or for having "fine" weapons/armor. I usually choose the option along the lines of, "I have nothing to give," and she says she understands and that times are difficult. However, usually straight out of Ostagar the best armor I have is chainmail unless I use mods, so maybe that's not "fine" enough for her.

I know one time I came to Lothering with like... 20 sovereigns to my person (I was very fortunate as I kept finding fire arrows/bolts which sell for a lot) and she said "You look like you've scavenged more then most people" or words to that effect.
I guess it depends on how much coin you have on your person.

"Will you be making a donation to the chantry, my friend? You look like you have salvaged more of value than most who make it here" is her opening line the first time you speak with her, unless you have Lels or Sten with you.
To get chewed out, choose "Tithe? To the chantry? Are you joking?"; the response will be "A great number of people could be fed and clothed for a fraction of your finery. But you must do as your heart wills." (Is every older woman in Ferelden all about guilting, lecturing, and chiding?)

Luna - thankyou
TSM - I don't mind Wynne knitting stuff after all once Alistair gets my PC pregnant who else is going to make little socks with pom poms?
And and not only is the RM willing to take a bribe (oops I mean tithe) of 30 silver but if you say you only have 10 silver she's happy to take the whole lot and leave you with nothing. 'Spose you could sell some of your finery. ![]()

I'll head to Lothering today with my ROGUE (sorry mouse) elf and see what happens ![]()

She is not pleased
but my real question.... so you're going to take your heavily made up elf to Lothering? She might just call the elf a trollop and not even notice Sten. OK, I had to because I just couldn't resist ![]()

According to the wiki you need 20 CUN or Mechanical Expertise, which doesn't look right at all and especially not for a 5 XP lock. I checked and found that a CUN score of 11 is sufficient, meaning that pretty much any rogue should be able to pick the cage lock. The wiki entry has been amended, but I didn't remove the original text because I have no way of checking other platforms or patch levels.
It's surprising how even the umpteenth playthrough can turn up new tidbits... In my previous playthrough I found a way to defer the fight with the 'toll collectors' until after I had a chance to bench all companions ("Do you really want to fight a Grey Warden?"). That makes soloing less messy, it might allow picking up Leliana before levelling up instead of after, and letting Leliana watch gives her a bit of extra XP.
This time I found an extra 20 silver ("You know, the Grey Wardens could use a donation"). ![]()
