Hi all, just a compilation of video interviews that I've gathered up from E3.  If you find more please add to thread.

Edit: And confirmation from Mark Darrah in the Polygon interview (around the 13:20 mark) that you can play through the entire game in tactical view if you want (apart from cutscenes etc). Great stuff!

Thank you very much! Interesting from the Polygon interview, Mr. Darrah mentioned that we get to decide who we put into the throne of Orlais and this will have long term implications to the world. Not that I did not see that coming but still good to know.

Really liked the Polygon and Zoomin interviews, got some decent info there. The Escapist one was also nice, thought Greg Tito came across as a DA fan.

Some good interviews I haven't seen yet.

 

My only gripe so far is in the Polygon interview with Mark Darrah.

 

He talks about the animation and how a guy with a two handed sword "looks like he's holding something that actually weighs 30lbs rather hten a feather."

 

This is something I hated about DA:O, you used two handed swords and they were sooooo slow, it just felt wrong and looked absurd. Two handed swords do NOT weigh nearly that much. You shouldn't be super-slow to move them around, they aren't that heavy, we are talking 3-5 pounds or so for a two hander usually, no where near 30 lbs.

This is something I hated about DA:O, you used two handed swords and they were sooooo slow, it just felt wrong and looked absurd. Two handed swords do NOT weigh nearly that much. You shouldn't be super-slow to move them around, they aren't that heavy, we are talking 3-5 pounds or so for a two hander usually, no where near 30 lbs.

The speed of the animation would have to be slowed up because usually Two handers do the most damage in rpgs, if the character swung at a fast rate you could argue it would make it a little too easy. I would assume the high damage output is compensated for by a slower rate of attack to balance things out. You are right about the weight of old greatswords though, 5-7 pounds seems to be about the average.

It's like the old chicken or the egg conundrum. 

 

They have them do more dmg because they assume they are slow, or do they make them slower because they do more dmg?

 

They could make them faster (just slightly slower then one handers) and lessen the dmg a bit while making them play more differently by having two handers be better vs armour (IE half-swording them).

And yay for that escapist interview saying all the armor slots for companions were back, I know some people thought we'd only get to change chestplates or have more limits again.

a real world bastard sword weighs much more. you need that weight in order to break through the armor. two handed swords are used for crashing and pummeling, you can't swing them just like that.

Have you taken a look at actual museum pieces, or read anything about swords (outside of fantasy books)?

 

Stiler is correct. two-handed swords during the middle ages (called longswords) weighed from 2.5 to around 4.5 pounds. I don't even know how large a sword would have to be to weigh 30 lbs. Maybe a huge steel bar or something.

 

You do not break through armor with swords. That would be highly ineffective... it's why armor was so prized - in order to get at the gooey insides you needed to bypass it. Attack the articulations, the face, the palms of the hand, the soles of the feet, etc. Leverage your opponent to the ground where you might be able to run him through a weak spot with your sword or dagger.

 

The two-handed swords featured in this game are something out of a Conan the Barbarian comic book, completely and totally a-historical. But that's how it's been since DA:O. It's just a fantasy trope and usually a game mechanic meant to balance out the weapon. Meh, I'm ok with it, even though I know it's not really accurate or realistic.

But it's the same sword, regardless of who si wielding it, human or Qunari, so that kind of deflates your hypothesis. Also, even if Qunari are 10 times stronger than humans (which I don't think is true), there's hardly any need for a sword that weighs that much, when a lighter one does the same job, in a more agile way.

 

In other words, you're just fan-fiction'ing in a reason for the fantasy trope. There might be a better made up solution - like metals with different properties, for example, but regardless, I think we're just thinking about it too much.

 

This is a fantasy game with fantasy tropes. No need to go beyond that, IMHO.

You don't "break through" any armour with a sword, they aren't a bludgeon weapon.

 

If you want to quickly get through armour an Axe, mace, pick, etc would be much better at breaking through it then any sword ever will be.

 

For swords against armour you would usually half-sword (Where you place your hand on the blade, and focus more on getting the tip of ht esword into vital non-protection areas, like the arm pits, groin, visor slit.

 

A lot of half swording was also focused on grappling, trips, disarms, etc. Getting your opponent to the ground so you could more easily achieve this goal.

 

 

This is an aspect of European martial arts that is sadly vastly overlooked in movies, games, books, etc. Everyone just stands around and wildly swings their sword or does "Stage" fighting (Where rather then using actual combat stances/moves they do stuff that they think "looks cool."

Added something from gamermd83 its not an interview per se just about her experience with Bioware and the game, I personally really liked it and appreciated her doing it.  I'm still waiting on Angry Joe he is supposed to have an interview up in the next few days I will update when it shows up.
