Well yes, black men as well (that's why I said character in the first sentence). From what I understand, natural hair is a particular issue that black women face because of conventional standards of beauty and all that, but of course black men too.
This is true. I will also further elaborate that a black woman's (and man's) hair doesn't generally grow out of her head straight and perfectly teased as some would think. Our hair usually has a tightly curled texture that can be pretty difficult to manage at times, especially darker skinned women like Vivienne. Unless you go the perm or wig/weave route, having perfectly straight, long (and even short) hair is unrealistic. And for many black women, braiding their hair, wearing a buzz cut, rocking their natural short (or long, but that is a whole nother issue) hair or installing a weave is the easiest way to deal with it. Especially the latter, since as you mentioned, we live in a society which generally dictates that straight hair is the ideal beauty standard.
Since African hair is a complicated subject in and of itself, I expected the usual misconceptions this thread provided.
