I assume she cut her off because of all the hairpieces she likes to wear.

I imagine hair would just get in the way.

For example, Stefani (Lady Gaga) keeps her hair cut really short (but still not a buzzcut) to make all her wigs work. I imagine with headpieces like her horns, it would be simply better to just cut out the hair entirely.

Well yes, black men as well (that's why I said character in the first sentence). From what I understand, natural hair is a particular issue that black women face because of conventional standards of beauty and all that, but of course black men too.

This is true. I will also further elaborate that a black woman's (and man's) hair doesn't generally grow out of her head straight and perfectly teased as some would think. Our hair usually has a tightly curled texture that can be pretty difficult to manage at times, especially darker skinned women like Vivienne. Unless you go the perm or wig/weave route, having perfectly straight, long (and even short) hair is unrealistic. And for many black women, braiding their hair, wearing a buzz cut, rocking their natural short (or long, but that is a whole nother issue) hair or installing a weave is the easiest way to deal with it. Especially the latter, since as you mentioned, we live in a society which generally dictates that straight hair is the ideal beauty standard.

Since African hair is a complicated subject in and of itself, I expected the usual misconceptions this thread provided.

Maybe I missed it, but did Bioware say Vivienne was bald? Doesn't matter to me if she is because she looks gorgeous. I thought Jack in ME was very pretty (didn't care for her tattoos though).  Vivienne's Orlesian, and they are all about the extravagant head pieces and masks so the hats fits Vivienne very well regardless of what's under it. Also Bioware is not good with hairstyles anyways, maybe EA should have them collaborate with Maxis. That's the only way you are gonna get good hairstyles in a Bioware game. :P

Yeah but Gaider confirmed she was black which I didn't know beforehand. She didn't have the features I'll agree but DAO and DA2's engine could not render black people so that's why she didn't look it. Same with Duncan.

I call bs. Depending on your character creation choices in DA2 you could have a black family and they looked convincing enough to me. Bethany was especially well done. The engine could handle it.

Maybe Gaider was simply facing pressure about the obvious lack of non caucasian characters in DA and just blurted something out lol.

Lol I laugh at this post, I did do this and while Bethany turned out...alright both Carver and Mama Hawke looked liked they had on blackface

While I won't presume I know what goes on in Gaiders head, I'll say the simple fact Vivienne exist was pretty big of Bioware as most game of fantasy genre tend to have about as much diversity as a LotR's book

My hope is we'll have a number of characters of color, and DA:I doesn't make Vivienne the only dark skinned black woman in the whole of Thedas.

But I'm not holding out much hope for good looking hair.

Stupid thread really. I hate when people related fantasy-based game characters to real life people.

For all those who don't care for Vivienne's shaved head, I'm sure a few months after release there will be more than one mod that gives her hair. Play it on the PC rather than the Xbone or PS4.

I think Gaider once mused well before DAI came out that he wanted a Beyonce or something in the DA universe. lol

Not the Vivienne is Beyonce though. She's a little more poised. I just don't think he was under any pressure about this.

If fantasy does not have some kind of grounding in reality, then it generally fails to work as something that reaches people intellectually or emotionally.  People are salivating all over Game of Thrones because of its gritty realism.

*sight* another bald woman. Buzz cuts and baldies, do not like. The number of possible LI´s for my pc keeps getting smaller and smaller.

Probably to make it easier to use elaborate wigs and headdresses. Could also be to disguise hair loss caused by lead-based makeup.

Lead was used as a whitener in historical makeup. I highly doubt that that's a concern of hers.

Hell No...I'm a black guy and I don't give a hell about my natural hair, and what others think about it.

I think it is good enough, and I am grateful

In-fact, I think no straight black man is even close to insecure about their hair...only some gay black men (no offense), and the majority of black women..

This post makes chuckle, NOT LAUGH only chuckle :P

Get more black friends because we do care about are hair whether we are gay or straight. Nothing beats the look of fresh hair cut, no one want a nappy or as we say down here "peasy" head of hair :)

Nope I understood you don't care any which way how your hair looks but my reply was more torwards the 2nd half of your post. That part needed some course correction

I'l tell you this, I think nappy hair is more beautiful than fake hair.

Combing hair is natural, it makes it look neat, and so does cutting it, or dreads. However complete faking into some else's hair is not, it is something that's not right. You're beautiful the way you are born...

I swear this is what leads to things like Micheal Jackson.

She has a buzz cut.

Why would she steal my haircut? That's very tasteless for someone as fashionable as her.

I really can't comment as to why black women use weaves or do perms but if they choose to, I certainly won't antagonize them for it

Once you reach a certain age what you do with your hair is your business, all I ask to keep it neat and combed or brushed

As for guys doing perms.....no comment, hell even Ice T finally stopped a couple years ago
