Anyway, I think there are quite a few good Western-animated cartoons that manages to adhere to the appeal of adolescents and younger audiences alike. There just aren't enough.

I'd say Adventure Time has a good balance of kids to adults. But the most recent episode literally fits into every criticism the show has faced.

Loud, colorful noise that is just pointless.

Thanks Masaaki Yuasa, Thanks alot.

I would. Spent part of my childhood watching the westernized version of this (animated series Star Blazers), which was awesome at the time:

The live action adaptation has the most effing awesome barrel roll that has ever graced the big screen. :D

Whaddya mean would? :) I have and would again. I think the problem lies with the American audience, they just aren't going to take an animated series seriously. Just not going to happen without years of cultural re-education. The only people that would watch are animation fans and there aren't enough of them to register on Nielsen.Starship Troopers Chronicles for all it's poor CGI animation, dodgy stories and firm PG rating comes closest to seriously showing war in space in animated form (for an American production) and that lasted one whole season. The original Clone Wars (2003-2005) beat the midichorians out of the CG version but everyone seems to have forgotten it.

Gendy Tartovsky was a god.

And in reply to the OP, Samurai Jack. That is all.

Well the cold hard truth is that we need to get out of the animation age ghetto. We need more adult animation that isn't comedy. I would like to see more action and sci fi rather than comedy on Adult Swim. I think the Warhammer and Mass Effect universes are popular enough to warrant their own animated movies/shows.

Have and totally would again. Both western animation and anime.

I thought the Clone Wars was fine in terms of its demographic. It contained a decent enough story for adults and kids alike to enjoy while being lighthearted. You know, like the actual movies.

I would also love to see Halo in a long-running animated series. Is there much word on the upcoming tv show?

I think animation would be a great way to prevent genre fatigue. I mean I love scifi, I don't get bored of this stuff no matter how many shows are on. But there are quite a few series out there now, more on the way, & I know people could get bored with them. Which is bad for me because I want moar. Animation could give something of a break, keep people interested in these shows longer.

Bioware IP's might be fun to explore, I love the concept art and game design so they already have a good resource to draw from. Mass Effect would be fun. There's allot to take from the games in a show. An animation would be perfect in that it can hit the universe in a way that games are limited. We know there's the Terminus species, and probably lots of weird aliens out there, intelligent or otherwise, animation could bring all that variety out & fill in some gaps.

I'd like to see more adult animation. With fantasy and scifi, maybe something picking up great stories that haven't had any major presence in film if at all.... Like Dragonriders of Pern, Dune, anything by Clarke, Haldeman, and other great scifi minds, or other game adaptions like Metro, Metroid, Cave Story, etc!

Now you find out what a real serious anime and a real humorous anime is!

110 episodes takes a little more than 3 months if you watch an episode every day.

I'm reading more the OP's posts and I have to wonder...

Have you ever watched anime? Seriously man, who gives a flying monkey **** if America does this or Europe does that when there's an entire country that release animated series catered for kids, adults and WHOEVER THEY WANT to cater to.

Ghost in the Shell

Code Geass

Gurren Laggan

Ergo Proxy

Serial Experiments Lain

Time of Eve

Legend of Galactic Heroes

Cowboy Bebop

Planetes

There are TONS of sci-fi animated series, and 3/4 of them leave ME (a franchise I love btw) flat on its ass.

ESPECIALLY Ghost in the Shell. That series is so beastly, sexy and jaw-dropping it's hard not think about it when you go for a mid-night 'pump.'

The live action Japenese shows first aired in 1974, the animated westernized versions ran from 1979-1984. Wikipedia has more info if curious.
