Bottom lines are this:
1) Digital Distribution is more reliable than physical copies for a few reasons. 1) You can easily redownload it, 2) Physical disks can be scratched and rendered unplayable. etc etc. Distributors like Steam have made great strides to make digital games accessible as well as helping to create a social network of gamers. Wha wha what about piracy then? I'm getting to that hold your horses.
2) Stop acting like piracy is only for the PC, because its not. In fact, there are probably alot more pirates on the 360 than the PC. The figures just seem very warped towards the PC, because people download the binaries and what not from their PC, and then burn it to a disk and play it on the console. "Well XBL bans those consoles" you might say. Well, then the 360 pirates would be in the same boat PC pirates are in then, just no additional content. So stop acting like an ignorant fool acting like this problem is only for the PC.
3) The legit sales far outweigh the pirate downloads. In fact, games are kept alive much longer on the PC because of such things as mods. If you want examples, look at Oblivion and Fallout 3. They are still alive and well on the PC generating sales and continuous players, while 360 players have long since moved on to their next fix.
tl;dr: Anyone in this thread bashing the PC with no grounds to back it up other than the piracy that is obviously apparent on the console as well, stfu and get back to school or somewhere where you can only annoy those around your general vicinity.

(This is actually the least of our worries, defense contractors and Exxon and such are of much bigger threat to stable, healthy society, but the point stands)

Javablood arent you the PC hero. What's wrong with console playing? The games are almost the same the difference is just the controlling? Some people like more to play from sofa than sitting on office chair. I personally have all consoles of the current generation and enjoy playing games on all systems. PC is good for rpg:s and strategy games but id say playing action and driving games on console is a much better experience compared to pc.
Sorry Kmies, I didn't mean to knock consoles. Hunterx just got my blood up talking smack about making the game for console exclusively.
We should all be thankful for the freedom computers offer. The competition to consoles helps to keep prices down and if we didn't have that competiton then the consles would really have us over a barrel. I've had my PC for almost 4 years and the only upgrades I've had to do is upgrade my video card from the factory one, and add ram.
Console games are always more expensive and the consoles themselves are not nearly as versatile (but I admit they're definitely moving in that direction).
I'm glad we have both options, but the OP's solution to piracy was really rediculous, and I made a snap reply in the moment. Guess the troll won lol.

Just look at the lawsuit against The Pirate Bay. Piracy is here to stay as more and more are supporting the ideals of "pirates". This is not necessarily a bad thing, and doesn't mean all pirates are cheating thieves who deserve to burn in hell for all eternity. Many use piracy and filesharing to promote themselves, and you can bet your hairy ass that the media industry wouldn't be as big without it.

5. "Intellectual Property" kills. Read the post above regarding medicine. Making money off something you didn't make is wrong, I agree with that. People who sell bootlegs are doing something wrong, I agree. Then again, so are CEOs when they make money off of music they don't write.
A response without sensationalist ignorance or personal attacks, I truly appreciate it AlanC9! [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/smile.png[/smilie]
It isn't immoral for a CEO to make money off of the music if he's actually got something to do with its production and distribution. Record companies provide --or used to provide -- all kinds of support. Marketing, advances to tide you over while making the next recording, distribution, manufacturing...
Nowadays you can do away with a lot of that, and many bands do. But nobody was ever forced to join a label. Bands wanted the services of a label, and freely contracted for them.
Except without filesharing, going independent isn't going to be very easy. The internet can market to way more people than traditional marketing avenues. The internet is making several facets of the "industry" irrelevant. Why pay someone to make posters in a store when you can go and put your stuff up on Myspace, Last.fm, Spotify, Youtube, Facebook, and have your own website. The brilliant part is that those are all free, so paying someone to do marketting is unnecessary. Except the media industry wants to bleed everything to death with "fees" and "royalties" so that they remain relevant.
"Intellectual property kills" is awfully lazy. Not having IP kills too.
No no, IP actually can result in death, when companies are more concerned about profits than people dying. I recommend reading/skimming the .pdf found at this link:
www.theinnovationpartnership.org/en/ieg/report/
One example the paper makes on this topic is the lawsuits 39 pharmaceutical companies brought against the South Africa government, for trying to act effectively to deal with the HIV/AIDS crisis there. Link to some info. (The case was dropped in 2001 due to "extremely high amount of international pressure".)
You haven't proven as much as you think you have. Not all piracy is theft. But some is.
I know. I agree, some of it is. I disagree that filesharing falls under that category though.
I'm fine with people disagreeing with my views on copyright, IP, and filesharing. But when people (not you, AlanC9) blindly tout laws and nonsense without taking the time to think critically about them, it just frustrates me. Girl Scouts get threatened, media lobbyists pay who-knows-how-much so the government is funded by them, but we the people have no lobbyists and so we get screwed.
p.s. Sorry for taking so long, I spent a bunch of time looking for links to other examples I've read but can't remember where I read.

Aye. Though there are always shades of grey, some people can't see in anything but black and white. Having said that, it's far easier to label everyone every pirate as "Bad Pirate" than try to wade through the muck to see which of them may be justified...especially given the anonymity of the internet.
Rjeid definitely raises some very good points on the issue though.

Not for PS3/X360. Did PSX, PS2 and GBA emulating, never bothered with the rest for the simple reason I didn't care.
Too many good PC games out there.
