How would Co-Op work? Player 1 pauses the game, and then gives commands. Resumes game, player 2 waits. Doesn't make sense.
Also this isn't twitch gameplay. It's a tactical combat, you make moves and countermoves. Even if the pausing wasn't the problem, and no one did it. What happens if someone makes a decision that you don't like? Also do you play your characters or does everyone create their own toon, and play like in a MMO? At which point they might as well make a MMO, but your decisions won't effect the game world.
Say I want to kill Cassandra cause she is a hatchet faced ******? What if you are romancing her? I just killed your girl bro! What you gonna do about it?! You can't do anything except leave in a huff and reload a save.
Short answer, co-op wouldnt' work for a RPG like this, and in order to get co-op multiplayer to work you would have to cheapen the classes for balance. Multiplayer, pvp or other stuff like that? Forget it. Everyone would roll a goddamn mage and spam earthquake or grease.

saying it won't work is short sighted, people said it wouldn't work for ME3, guess what, it did, its still being religously played, are you still playing it as single player? And don't say you plan to do a run through some time soon, or down the line, that doesn't count, there are still people actively playing the mp almost every day. Multiplayer for DA especially with being able to target individual body parts and such, sure it wouldn't be pause and play, but that doesn't mean anything, not everyone is going to play that way. Heck, most of the time I play twitch, feels better to me, I generally only pause in the opening volley of a battle and make a strong first set of moves and then go from there, letting my well thought out tactic sets run the npc's for me. As for actively playing co-op, if you import your toon, they act as a party member, sure you have to sit back and let the main person do the talking, but eh, most of us can wait too minutes, or actively talk with our buddy and even help them make descisions. And even without your own toon, just being able to take over a party member and play them with human intelligence would be a boon and fun to do.

the Host is the PC that opens 3 spots for the rest of the grp who proceed to import there character or make a new one to help you live your story.
Co-op for me is about giving and sharing not taking away, i join my friends in co-op to help them or they join to help me it is that simple.
Another thing that is simple is it is in the name, i lvled a few toons in swtor with my buddies, you know what wee did before playing? shock an horror, made dialogue choices on how we was going to proceed, when your playing co-op communication is your buddy, dont matter that it is mmo or sp "COOPERATION" is what it is all about.
Co-Op in DA could an would work just fine

I agree with the OP that a co-op mode for the story would be awesome. It could easily work like in Baldurs Gate, where one player is the protagonist and the other player is simply a companion. In any case don't count on it, if you're looking for co-op RPG I can highly recommend the very soon up-coming Divinity: Original Sin.
Now multi player would be awesome. Personally I am still hoping for a Mass Effect 3 inspired co-op multiplayer, just added in some great siege like battles.

Or it could work like Dragons Dogma companion style, Two Worlds 2 with a smaller seperate story for online or could mix both after already completing ingame events to give off replayability

Mass Effect 3 had a team multiplayer that was seperate from the story OP.

A second player could control and direct monsters you encounter in battle from a top down isometric perspective. Can't place them, but just strategically use the abilities and movement of those who are already placed by the developers.

Sounds interesting. How would it work?

Sounds interesting. How would it work?
Some sort of rhythm game or quicktime event?
Or how about PvP romance, where you take turns throwing out cheesy one-liners to deplete each other's "restraint", and the winner gets to top.
Or whatever the straight equivalent of topping is.

I loved the MP in ME3, I'm sure I would love MP in DA3. One possible way that it could work, which would be similar to ME3's MP, would be to have a group of 4, each player controlling their own character, and maybe you have to defend your castle, maybe you have to invade an enemy castle, but each player would have their own powers and abilities and you'd have to work together to defeat the bad guys. Yes there wouldn't be pausing, but since you'd just be controlling your own character you wouldn't really need to pause. It seems like that would be a whole lot of fun, I'm sure I would play it a ton, like I did with ME3.

Keep MP away from the Main Game, Sure they can do it separate like ME3 (stupid Squad Readiness points out)
I hate MP in these RPG games.
I do not wish to come up to a quest that Needs me to Team Up to complete it.
