Are there going to be cities for us to explore?

So far I love what I have seen from DA:I.  I love all the different environments and all the open space to explore.  But sometimes, after being out in the wild and exploring for a long time, I like to head back to the city and stock up on supplies and recharge.  Maybe talk to a  few people and do some side missions.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from all the videos I've seen of DA:I, there has been a lot of exploring the world and there have been some small villages.  I haven't really seen a vast city, or any real cities for that matter.  In footage for the Witcher 3 at e3 we saw Novigrad.  Are there going to be any cities, or big cities, in DA:I?  Maybe Bioware just hasn't talked about or showed them off yet, or maybe I missed it, but I am curious to know.  We have seen a lot of open spaces, but I would like to know that the world is populated and lived in and a city would help with that.

Yep, you've hit the nail on the head over a theory I've had for a while, that there won't be any. Could be mistaken, of course, but it feels like Skyhold, the Inquisition's main base of operations, is intended to fill that void, and that the keeps you establish out "in the wild" will take the place of any real wealth of towns.

My guess is that there won't be any big cities in the game. At most, we might see something the size of Denerim in DAO. If there were going to be any major urban areas, I think they would have shown them off by now.

Personally, I'm OK with that. Inquisition seems to be placing an emphasis on open-ish world exploration, and DA2 was mainly set in an urban environment so it will be interesting to have something new this time around.

Maybe not full city, but there will probably be a ball in Halamshiral we are going to visit.

I'd be shocked if there wasn't at least one hub with a larger concentration of quest givers, quests in general, important NPC's, shops etc.

Skyhold does indeed seem the most likely candidate to tick these boxes.

Hmm, I'm not really sure how to feel if there are no real cities other than the keeps.  On the one hand, it is something different, but on the other hand, I want to feel like the world I'm in is real, that it is being lived in.  Where are all the people?  Where are all the sidequests going to come from?  Are there just going to be a bunch of little tiny villages?

Thedas basically is in middle ages-like era (like most fantasy), so there are very few big cities.

There will be Redcliffe (occupied, apparently, with a hole in the sky). At least part of Halashiral. Possibly some Dwarven city. But yes, there will be mainly villages and keeps, just like it used to be in that historical era.

I reckon there will be some larger built-up areas, or portions of cities (on par with area sizes we've seen in previous games) but I doubt we'll see any particularly huge and sprawling areas. Not sure why I have that impression, but it doesn't quite seem to fit with the exploration and "set your own objective" style that open world gameplay usually presents... we'll see!

I'm pretty sure we'll see at least part of Halamshiral.

I really hoping to see Val Royeaux, and early on I thought it was a shoe in, but now I'm not so sure.

I guess after seeing video for the Witcher 3 and seeing/hearing about Novigrad, I was hoping DA:I might have at least one city like this.  Maybe it will but I suppose I should probably prepare for this to not be the case.

Well, there have been some images of what I think was Halamshiral, so I'm sure we'll have something.

Being able to see Val Royeaux would be awesome.  Seeing at least part of Halamshiral would work as well, I guess it just depends on how much of it we get to see.

I think people have phobia of Kirkwall :P. Nah just joking. I like some nice "living world" cities as well.

I think we'll definitely be visiting Val Royeaux since we'll be going to Orlais and the Royal Cathedral, but as for the size no one knows for sure yet.

Unfortunately I get the impression that we won't get cities like Denerim or something, but from the demo alone we can see that we'll stumble across small villages and stuff.

A game like this with no cities is a game without glory.

At the EA press conference at E3, when the women was playing the theme music, they showed a trailer showing off the environments in the game which included part of a city, I can't seem to find that trailer though.

I doubt it. I saw the available video footage and while the areas seem more open, the few NPCs I saw were still rooted in place. You can't convey a vast city like Novigrad or AC's Paris with everyone just standing around.

That place is possibly Halamshiral.

Bioware games usually have one big city to visit.

I think we'll visit a city but it will probably be just some areas of the city and not the whole city. Something like Denerim or Citadel. I hope it will be Val Royeaux :)

While one shouldn't judge the entire game based on the e3 demos, an indication can be found in Rockpaperscissors' article on The Witcher 3: http://www.rockpaper...r-3-e3-preview/

At the bottom of the article he compares Novigrad as you mention to similar experience the reporter had in DAI.

Certainly Val Royeaux is a city we should be able to visit.  Another possibility is a Dwarven city, since we've seen footage of the Deep Roads already, we know we'll be going there, so there could be a city we get to see there also.  Of course our main stronghold could be so big that it could be 'like' a city, particularly as we build it up (assuming we have the opportunity to build it up) and I hope that's true, but just on principle alone any RPG should have at a minimum one actual city (really more than one, but one is a whole lot better than none) .
