OK, from what I hear Alistair (sword and board) and Morianna (sp?) (nuker) are the most fully-developed characters. Based on my experience with Bioware, I for sure want to play with the most fully-developed characters (Bastila/HK47/Wrex, etc.) in my first playthrough just to experience the developers' creativity.
I also have read that a rogue is a necessity because there is no equivalent to the Knock spell and you can't open chests with bashing.
Generally, I never play a party RPG without a healer - and even when I play one-man party RPGs, I want to have healing ability (e.g., in Borderlands I only take healing shields, no matter how good the other shields I find are).
Obviously, if I stick with all the above, I have precious little choice. My PC must be either a rogue or a healer, which are certainly NOT my first choices, and I have to take the other one with my open NPC slot. So here are some questions:
(1) Are the two above really the best-developed characters?
(2) Is it possible/probable/fun to play without a rogue?
(3) With the quick regen of health/mana after battles, is it possible/profitable/fun to play without a healer?
(4) Any other good suggestions for me to deal with these conundrums?
Party composition/PC class questions (minor spoilers)

I can't say I've gotten to far but from my experiences thus far
1.) Best developed is open to interpretation, I however do like them the most of the party members thus far.
2.) In actual combat I'd say rogues aren't necessary (but then neither is anything else really) however be prepared to be endlessly frustrated at not being able to get extra loot
3.) I'm playing without a healer atm I just make sure to craft plenty of health potions for everyone and take out priority targets asap
4.) Tactics menus are useful, you can set your party members to auto use health pots when they get below x% health can save you a lot of micromanaging. Have a tactics menu for each character set to attack main character/controlled character's target, this will let you focus the firepower of your party much more efficiently than any micro-managing.

Hmmm... No. They're very good characters, but I wouldn't call them the best.

It's possible to play without a rogue. 2H warriors seem to do more damage and are harder to kill. Rogues are mostly good for lockpicking.

I'd say 'no.' Maybe on easy difficulty.

A rogue w/ assasin will let your party do a lot of damage but rogues are squishy. Warror with champion will also boost your party. You don't need a spirit mage, just a mage with the basic creation heal spells and make sure to have plenty of potions and always move your characters away when they are being flanked. Flanking kills things fast, you or the enemy.

Leliana and Wynne are both great characters. Alistair/Morrigan/Leliana/PC Healer would be a great team, as would Alistair/Morrigan/Wynne/PC Rogue.
But you don't have to have a rogue. Locked chests generally only contain sellable loot and crafting materials. If you're finding yourself cash-strapped, add a rogue back in, but otherwise going without is perfectly fine. Alistair/Morrigan/Wynne/PC Warrior (probably 2H) is a perfectly usable team.

It really bothers me that we can only have 3 extra members in the group because I seem to always want to keep the dog but honestly, he doesnt ever seem to do as well as the others, nor is as versatile. Still I have trouble not wanting him in the group..And you get into the scripted cutscenes with the individual toons, but then you want to try someone new. It's too tough a decision.

This sounds like a good option - didn't know about the "basic heal."
But I am trying it out with a 2H warrior 1st (dwarven noble, Dern, the same name as my WOW dwarf fighter). I will take Morrigan and Alistair and I don't have to make my decision between rogue and healer just yet.
I may try your set-up my 2nd time through, but I am thinking a fighter 1st go-round for the simplest gameplay.
