I realize that in the original description of Kepral's syndrome, where the problem is with the lungs being able to process oxygen, fluid buildup and bacterial infections, blood doping wouldn't do anything.

However in the Mass Effect 3 version, if the only problem is that his cells were having increasing amounts of trouble transporting enough oxygen, it would be easy to compensate for by increasing the number of cells, or by using an artificial substance for the same purpose. Also that would be absurdly easy to fix via bone marrow transplant if Drell were anything like humans.

Again this was an idea for the Mass effect 3 Kepral's syndrome, not ME2.

I liked your post for the emo comment. The comment about the lungs is ridiculous though if Keplar Sydrome affects red blood cells :P these cells aren't prdocued in the lungs.

But I guess that has to do with the ME2/ME3 differnce in the disease.

You didn't actually read my post about a proposed pathophys of Kepral Syndrome at all, did you?

A bone marrow transplant is not the treatment for pure red cell aplasia, aplastic anemia, or really most disorders of red blood cell production in humans.

I have another alternative explanation for Thane's description (which again, was a very vague description involving the Drell equivalent of hemoglobin - but he could have been speaking as a layman): anemia of chronic disease.

The inability of his lungs to clear moisture sets up a secondary chronic bacterial pneumonia, and with time this leads to an anemia of chronic disease due to iron sequestration. This would effectively shut down the marrow's production of RBCs- exactly what the Citadel doctor describes after the Coup.

At least, that is exactly how it would work for a human (or any other mammal on Earth). Drell are a fictional alien species, of course, but I am merely speculating a plausible scenario to explain his combination of symptoms. And, a blood transfusion would fix this problem temporarily...unless he was critically injured, which he ends up being.

As far as I have read, that is the most plausible explanation for the ME2-3 discrepancy that I have seen thus far.

If only Kolyat could be killed in ME2. Thane would've had a bin of spare parts.

I feel bad for laughing at that.
