tried with maker Sigh potion number of trees.

 

why I get the feeling that Primal is only worthwhile must have tree?

 

got best defensive protection spell, got awesome targeted AOE. you got non area but target specific aoe (chain) you got physical damage spell and awesome single target CC.

Also Tempest after upgrade is epic spell which will most of the time will cause all mobs to get stun and by the time I finish it my party sliced and chopped everyone.

 

Do note I took force mage for extra juice to the force power of the spells.

 

(also used maker Sigh on all my companions to make sure their builds are sexy enough).

Really wanted to try spirit tree but heard death syphon is bugged so it's losing it's "magic" so to speak. Walking bomb is not instant like other aoe spells and magic bolt looks pretty damage wise so far.

Dispel magic after upgrade supposed to be the new version of mana clash but no... just no... I prefer stone fist and petrify to handle those pesky mages.

 

At any rate beside few good ones I've encountered most spells outside of primal tree for hawke mage looks pretty meh....

Entropy got few nice ones like horror and first hex but most of the others seems pretty meh.

Blood magic looks like it got potential for some pretty wicked health to mana ratio exploit but spells themselves are meh as well.

 

I miss spell combos.

Found that thread last night lol.

 

At any rate seems it was partially my fault as I forgot to upgrade my gear due to dlc items. act 2 got new gear damn my spells hit like truck.

Have not tried a Blood mage in any of my playthroughs; Force and Spirit Healer have been fine for me. And while I do not take many of the latter spells if any, Force offers a wider range for Crowd Control if desired.

And the reason I like the Mage class the most in DA2 is the versatility of the builds; no single one that stand out for me. However, I also prefer Elemental and Primal as my base designs; effective.

I'm almost 25 mid act 3.

tried variety of stuff and nothing compare to the usability of force \ primal \ elemental fully upgraded.

 

1. cast gravity ring in middle of your group.

2. cast tempest on mid gravity ring.

3. cast fire storm mid tempest.

 

now we got storm of the century.

 

from here use ice spells to prime stuff and lightning spells to finish combos. also fireball for the occasional boom.

As I recall, the Arcane and Creation schools also have some useful spells; for buffs and CC. Nothing says doom like two conjured storms over a paralyzed group of foes.

I use anders as healer for the hard fights like high dragon and that's where I give him heroic aura and such.

 

I really wanted to try more arcane\spirit build but it was utter meh.

 

I think most mage builds suck badly because of the new sustained system and the change to blood magic from how it was in origin.

after BM nerf, I-m expecting good old FM with some Primal/Elementary damage spells to set up CCC and creation Haste + Heroic Aura is the most simple and safe way to go
