Thinking about giving it as a gift to my little brother, he's really into Star Wars, Minecraft etc and I'm the only relative into computer games. I really want to introduce him to Bioware games but he's 10 and Dragon Age is out of the question. I seem to remember KOTOR being a bit more like it?

Would be grateful for any tips :)

I'd wait for 1 or 2 more years, but it depens on how mature he is. I also have a little brother who's at the same age as yours, but he's a lot less mature than I was at his age, so I did not introduce him to these games yet.

KotOR is a lot less brutal than Dragon Age, that's true, but it also has some really gruesome moments. If your brother is really into Star Wars and he was able to watch Episode III without problems, I think he's going to be fine with this game. The gameplay mechanics might seem complex or confusing to a ten year old first, but Its nothing that he can not figure out by playing the game.

I was eleven when I first played KotOR, and altough there where some parts and gameplay elements I did not fully understood, I had a great time exploring and learing every bit of the game. I even learend English from that game, and I couldn't speak a word in English before.

I think the rating is the same as most other Star Wars stuff, but many of the themes can be harder to understand for a kid.

I can't think of anything objectionable in KotOR that a 10 year old who already likes Star Wars couldn't handle.  If you think the game would hold his interest, I'd say he's ready.

I was deep into CRPGs by the time I was 11.

My Dad actually got me the game when I was 7, if you can believe that. I played it without many difficulties, other than not being able to understand much of what was going on because of my basic reading level, but I was able to beat the game on the lightside even with that handicap.

Then again, I had been playing shooters like James Bond from before that. It all depends what level of maturity you think your brother is at.

Actually, now that I think about it, I introduced my brother to KOTOR when he was also 10 (this year). He had no problems understanding what to do and wasn't intimidated by the game, but I don't think it's his favorite genre, since he abandoned before leaving Taris. He highly prefers shooters and action games, which is a shame since KOTOR is an awesome game. I hope your brother enjoys the game as much as we all did. It really is a gem.

Awesome, thanks all! I think I'll get it for him! I know my dad buys him a lot of stuff for older kids so I think compared to that I'm still on the safe side anyway. Really hoping he will like it! :)

I've been trying to introduce my brother to RPGs for years, since... I guess we must have been 11 or 12 (Yes, twins!).  Which was probably around the time I started playing KoToR myself.  But he remains more of a shooter person and he never gets through the prologue when I convince him to give them a try because after the first few conversations he drops it and complains that there's too much talking.

  <_<

So, I guess you have to ask yourself if its the sort of game that will hold his interest.

Considering I played KotOR when I was around 3-4 years old and am much more mature than other people my age...  I'd definitely say this game is fine for him.  Yeah I know you already decided but I just don't get why people were telling you to wait a few years.

10 is rather a little young for the game to be honest.

Actually, not a little, I'd consider holding off for at least 2 to 3 years. KotOR is more of an adult game; there is no adult content (like nudity, ultra-violence, swearing, innuendo, etc.), but it would take a more mature mind to really comprehend the game and a lot of the themes, idea's, and plots raised by the game.

Plus, it's not what I'd call suitable for a 10 year old's sensibilities; he'd likely lack the patience to truly understand the game and how it works. It's a very technical RPG, not an action game that has things happening at every second. It relies on a lot of talking and dialogue, especially to advance the plot, and that doesn't seem like something a 10 year old would have the understanding or patience for.

I understood it when I was 4...

You understood every part of the game at age 4?

The game wasn't even around when I was 4.

I understood it when I was 4...

I could say from similar experience, since I got it when I was 7, that I understood it as well, but not to a total degree. The combat I got, the general quests I got, but sometimes I'd do an action and get dark side points for it, and I couldn't understand why. Now I was considered mature for my age as well, but it wasn't until I was around 10-12 that I truly got the full experience, meaning I understood how to properly complete quests so I could get whatever light/dark side points I wanted.

I don't think it's possible for someone who is still a child to understand how society works, how people in real life work, how they handle conflict, etc. At 4 to be playing video games that require nothing but gameplay like COD, Halo, etc. is perfectly reasonable. For someone to understand the social context, dialogue and complex plots of a video game takes a higher level of intelligence, and that isn't something we develop until we get to elementary school. At ages 4, kids are learning to draw squares and know about 1500 words. I don't think that qualifies as being able to understand the complex plot, the understated aspects and the way society works for an RPG.
