Just how dark will things get?

I don't mind a little darkness to my games. They ad to the gravity of the situation, and for the most part, adds to the story. But what I wanna know is just how dark will the game be pushed? With an event like the fade tear, I can assume things will get pretty dire, what with the various nasty monsters that will come across. Not to mention if Dragon Age has shown us anything, is that we meet plenty of dark depraved characters along our adventures.

The two most notable examples that I could think of would be the Serial Killer in Dragon Age 2, and the explanation of the of the Broodmothers via Hespith. Both were equally dark in my opinion, and I have to wonder if Bioware will go beyond that or simply match it.

Well I hope we get more of these type of elements. Dragon Age is meant to be "dark fantasy" after all and the whole "demons are coming in from the fade!" scenario gives a lot of potential for "dark" material.

Other notable examples would be The Circle Tower (and it's demonic corruption), The Darkspawn's horrific transformation of areas into grotesque environments and finally Redcliffe and the undead.

I hope we get a few exorcisms again. They were great and allowed for different approaches and a lot of role-playing. In my opinion, they were great examples of that "ambiguous morally grey" area where you can perceive the demon to be so much of a threat that you're willing to kill its host (a child) to save others even when there are other options available. One can interpret this as ruthless and another as heroic and thinking for the greater good.

Oh, I agree I expect at the very least a half a dozen of dark scenes. But I hope its not over done. You need room for levity so things don't get too dark. There needs to be a healthy balance to where Dragon Age can be called a Dark fantasy, but it doesn't get overbearing on the Darkness.

Well she is a rogue. That is sort of their thing. I wouldn't call it Dark. Of course with context it can be rather dark.

I'd be suprised if we get people having their eyes scooped out with a spoon. We will probably get told about lots of dark things, but not so much shown them.

I agree unless you want something like Berserk (which fits its universe I suppose). I don't mind either way so long as there are "dark" sub-plots that are explored again.

TBH neither game disappointed me there so I doubt Inquisition will either. DA2 had some dark plots especially with the abominations possessing templars and the "All that Remains" quest. Hell, I thought the game was quite depressing at some parts so it did the job.

@Juju

The funny thing is, is that he probably is actually writing that. The face fits that caption. Just look at it.

(On another note, I just realized George looks like Santa... :? )

One of the best things about Dragon Age, in my opinion, is how it balances darkness with levity. Sure a lot of horrible things are going to happen and it can get pretty depressing when it does. But the next minute, one of the companions will say something hilarious and it lightens thing up. And that's what makes the darkness bearable and never let's it become overwhelming.

I'm hoping the latter of Morrigan's "Darkness closes in. Will you stand against it, or lead this world to its bitter end" to come true. Provided certain conditions are met, of course. As much as I was devasted to discover the worst possible ending of ME3:

Spoiler
I still want something like that in DAI.

I definitely prefer the more fun aspects to the darker aspects, I like it better when the darker parts are optional, saved for when you made a bad choice and those are the consequences of your actions.  When the possibilities are there for really bad things to happen, it makes things that much more satisfying when you avoid them and good things happen instead.  So that's what I hope we get more of in DAI, more like the ME2 model, where all sorts of terrible things 'could' happen, but they could also be avoided, depending on your actions.

Doesn't get darker than broodmothers and seeing your own mom raised into undeath like that.

Other memorable mentions:

- Stabbing the woman pregnant with your child

- The Red Wedd- Cousland massacre ( they killed the bloody kid :( )

So you want to say fight for your happy ending per say? If you fight hard enough and do the extra harder things you can avoid them? I can live with that, so long as they make them tough to pull off. They don't call it the High road for nothing.

Leliana snap a guys neck with her legs( ) and then picked him up again as an abomination and then spit some cold words to that Tevinter Magister and slit his son's throat, killing him twice. This game is gonna be the darkest DA game of them all so far. Also, Redcliffe castle is effed up so no more Arl Tegan.

The politicking will make the Red Wedding look like a kindergarten birthday party in comparison; things will happen to our characters that would make Ramsay Snow and Joffrey Baratheon say "That's a bit much" and the gore will be on par with Oberyn's death.

Or, at least, that's what I wish would happen.

- Stabbing the woman pregnant with your child

When did we stab a woman pregnant with our child?

Also, Hawke's mom's death was just silly, in my opinion.

I don't know if I am in the minority here, but nothing ever seemed super grim or your prospects of surviving were slim. Different kind of games but i'll try to explain.

The Last of Us, things looked bad a lot of times, and I wasn't sure how things would play out, in Dragon Age, I've never found myself saying, man things have gotten bad, and it seems like you have no chance of succeeding.

I'm not saying that's not her thing. I'm saying that if that's the kind of thing they use to advertise the game, then we're in for some depravity.

If you're talking about the possibility of stabbing Morrigan during Witch Hunt, that happens years after DA:O.

Anyway, as long as it's not like ME3 where there is no hope and nothing you do will matter then I should be ok.

I'm hoping for some major 'WHAT' moments, instead of just a a lot of subtle hints.

My first time playing DA2, when I got to the serial killer with my mother...I kind of just put down my laptop and just sat there. It was so unexpected (a lot of people saw it coming but I'm oblivious so don't judge me >:u) and caught me off guard and later I found it added a lot! I'd rather events like that then just a bunch of gruesome deaths.
