Not very dark. LOTR dark, I guess.
Failure ending will consume Thedas in eternal shadow?
Can it get any darker than this? ![]()

Put spoiler tags on. I don't want to get spoiled on shows I'm currently watching. People might not be expecting to see this here. It is bloody annoying.
That is so true. I hate the fact that some people don't seem to grasp that everyone don't watch (or can't watch even) TV episodes or movies as soon as they come out in America.
On DA forum I expect getting DA games spoiled and even DA books and comics spoiled but definitely not a completely random show or movie I'm watching (or planning to watch). I've seen people discussing anything from GoT and Pacific rim to Harry Potter on these forums and somehow I've even had the ending of Frozen spoiled for me
(wth does Frozen have to do with DA?!?!)

I think being a leader itself could be an addition for the game to be pretty dark, if the game developers can flesh it out right. If you could rule like Goeffrey the tone of your playthrough becomes really grimm, but this needs to be supported by the npcs that surrounds you. They would start fearing you, sending antivan assassins against you.
The Redcliffe scene from the demo was pretty dark too since you see Leliana killing a magister's son infront of his father. I would expect that there should be grey choices about corruption, betrayal and killing important npcs in cold blood.

Well I hope we get more of these type of elements. Dragon Age is meant to be "dark fantasy" after all and the whole "demons are coming in from the fade!" scenario gives a lot of potential for "dark" material.
Other notable examples would be The Circle Tower (and it's demonic corruption), The Darkspawn's horrific transformation of areas into grotesque environments and finally Redcliffe and the undead.
I hope we get a few exorcisms again. They were great and allowed for different approaches and a lot of role-playing. In my opinion, they were great examples of that "ambiguous morally grey" area where you can perceive the demon to be so much of a threat that you're willing to kill its host (a child) to save others even when there are other options available. One can interpret this as ruthless and another as heroic and thinking for the greater good.
I would like some scenes like this - but not the whole game (I hated this in BSG (2003) - it was too dark and the characters are acting like it...they don't even try (or they should try harder...))...
I hope they keep the level we have had (dark stuff just for the heck of it is wrong, too - if it serves a purpose (story wise) then ok, but not just for the lolz)
greetings LAX

Been playing Watch Dogs by any chance?
Not really. Is watch dogs about serial killers? I thought it was mostly computer stuff and hacking.

I know it's just a matter of personal preference, so please take the following violent distaste for the idea in that context.
No. I loathe all these thrillers, cop shows, crime stories, police procedurals etc, and you cannot escape the bloody things these days. They infest every corner of every media breeding like cockroaches and with about the same appeal. I would happily take a flamethrower to the lot of them. Can we not apply the cookie cutter yet again to some poor, unsuspecting piece of fiction. It's not really the end of the world if there's one work that isn't contaminated with this garbage.
And breathe.
Fair enough. I just figured it would be a lot easier for me to connect and immerse if the problems presented in the game are problems that I believe can happen in the real world. And I wasn't really suggesting it would be a crime drama of some sort, with all the tedious investigating and searching for clues.
But like you said, it's all about personal preferrence. I doubt they'd have enough time to include these things in the game, with the release date only months away.

That's the central theme but the game has a serial killer subplot, sex traffic sub plot, arms dealing, stuff like that. There's a ton of stuff to do.

Hopefully it'll be closer to DAO or maybe even darker. DA2 was pretty light hearted and hard to take seriously. DA2 felt more like watching those TV fantasy series like Xena or Hercules.
Actually DAII was very dark, with lots of really bad things happening you couldn´t prevent. It´s just the writing failed so miserably at getting one immersed into the tale that you didn´t care.

I'm hoping for some major 'WHAT' moments, instead of just a a lot of subtle hints.
My first time playing DA2, when I got to the serial killer with my mother...I kind of just put down my laptop and just sat there. It was so unexpected (a lot of people saw it coming but I'm oblivious so don't judge me >:u) and caught me off guard and later I found it added a lot! I'd rather events like that then just a bunch of gruesome deaths.
That wasn't nearly as much of a WHAT moment to me as the sibling death. I noticed Bethany standing in the background of the cutscene looking all blighted and immediately started getting mad.

This raises the age-old questions of: Is there a statute of limitations on spoilerhood? And: If so, does it apply across media?
Considering the event in question has been available in book form for 14 years...

I'm expecting a fair amount of darkness, considering the footage we've seen so far with Leliana, and the Crestwood Village thing from last year. Not to mention this year's gameplay I think I recall a woman telling the Quiz that Templars killed her husband because they said his shovel looked like a mage staff?
However, I'm sure will still have that balance with moments of levity as well. That IB-Sera banter already seems to be pretty popular.

I really want it to be as dark or even darker than the previous two games. I'm surprised people thought the serial killer using Hawke's mother to be laughable. I thought it was pretty diabolical.... There was serious (and subtle) lead up to it over at least 2 acts. Also, when I found out who had been endorsing the serial killer I was pretty McMad.
DAO had so many dark moments too. I remember when I first booted up the game and made a city elf, I was shocked by what happened in my origin story. I had just turned 17 and DAO had been my birthday gift. It was my first M rated game. I had never experienced such a situation in a game before! I thought it was amazing, edgy, and dark.

Isn't it dark enough by this point? How about an increase in light? Between all the crap between DAO, DA2, and the "fridge horror" implications brought on by both the games and subtle headcanon, I'm flat-out depressed at the current state of affairs, at least as far as my main playthrough is concerned. ![]()

I'd be suprised if we get people having their eyes scooped out with a spoon. We will probably get told about lots of dark things, but not so much shown them.
Been done by W2 anyway.
By the same guy who does carver's voice nonetheless.
