What you will read here is completely my opinion which formed from reading, seeing and hearing countless people rage about the Mass Effect 3 ending. I haven't posted on this forum in about 6 months and I've avoided it alltogether because of the toxic attitude of most of the users. This thread will most likely be locked because the majority of those who will read it won't like it's contents and in turn those who moderate these boards will lock the topic. Even if it passes the moderators it will most likely be locked because of the poison that will be spilled here. But that's okay, I just want to went my feelings so here we go:
Let me start by criticizing the people who took the "Retake ME3" to the next level. Personally I had no problems with the Retake movement because I was, like many, disapointed by the ending. When the people started sending BW employees 3 coloured cupcakes and tried to sue the company I started to think that they were going too far. But then calls were made where Bioware employee families were threatened I started to realize what snakes are the people of the Internet. Everywhere you went there were people bashing Bioware like they were some criminal that murdered a child. Bioware this, Bioware that. For some time people even forgot that Bioware made the Mass Effect franchise in the first place and now the "fans" were attacking them for their made up reasons.
The second thing that I have to talk about is the entitlement of the "fanbase". First of all, Bioware doesn't owe you anything. I know what you will say: "But we paid 60 dollars for this game! We deserve a better ending. WE WANT A BETTER ENDING!!!!!!" You don't "deserve" anything. You paid for entertainment that lasts about 30 hours. 30 hours for 60 dollars. You have to pay about 10-15 dollars to see a 2 hour movie. Do the math yourselves. You will say : "Bioware lied that there are tons of different endings! THEY LIED, THEY'RE THE WORST COMPANY EVER!!!" I get it, promises were made but that's the point of promises and PR - to make you buy a product. I don't see anyone raging when the burger from McDonald's doesn't look like the ads. And while there is some truth that BW could have put more effort in the ending variety the fault is still divided with the fans who hyped the game way too high to the point they started believing their own imaginations and speculations.
Third thing is that the Mass Effect "fan" has no idea when to quit their whining. I get it, Bioware messed up with the endings. When they released the EC it proved that they care about their fans and they would prioritise this DLC just to please the fans. They, however, were unpleasable. No matter how good the EC is, no matter how much effort the company puts in the damn thing, the "fan" will never be statisfied, he or she will always want more because of their own made up speculations. They will never accept that this is how the company wants to end the story because to them only their own opinion is the one that matters.
Finaly the thing that bothers me the most is that the "fans" are either unable and/or unwilling to forgive and move on. To them every move made by Bioware is considered a hostile action, be it a response to the public or a game announement. No matter how much time will pass the "fan" will rip anything Bioware offers into little pieces because it "betrayed the fans". This hatred for the company will only grow because the ''fan'' sees the company as the reason why their "dreams and fantasies" were shattered. They're too blinded by self pity so they don't see that the only "evil" in this situation is made up entirely by them, a made up enemy to mask their own problems, if you will.
I conclude this long and doomed rant with the thought that the Mass Effect franchise should be euthanized. I mean completely. I love this franchise as much as the next guy but it's sufferred too much damage to ever recover from the attack of the "fanbase". No matter how good the future sequels will be, no matter how good Bioware treats it's fans the masses will always follow it bashing everything that is good. This is why the franchise can longer be saved. Bioware didn't kill Mass Effect.
We did.
