Let's keep the chatter here to avoid cluttering up the game thread.

Consider this as a scratch space to negotiate (and authorize) joint posts, announce absences, ask for clarification regarding the game, or whatever else you want to talk about outside the game.

Thanks for putting up all the info! This DnD stuff is waaay more complicated than I realized. I'll try my best to read everything and figure out what I'm doing.

It is a little on the complicated side, but don't let it stress you out. This gaming system is new to all of us, even those who have played DnD before, so we'll all have to start slow and allow a few do-overs until we get used to things. We won't start the game until everyone is ready, and we'll do a short warm-up segment before we start the game in earnest. I'll copy the chargen example from the PM thread to the group forum to make that part easier.

That was really complicated, yeah. Do you think you could take us through it, step-by-step?

I've posted the example from the PM thread. I'll go through it and see if I can figure out how to post screen shots of the relevant sections of the PDF for each part.

I've posted an example of plot posts and player actions. It's going to seem confusing, but we'll do an "open" encounter together (all die rolls explained, things that would ordinarily be sent as PMs posted in the thread, etc) before we start the game for real. It will take a little bit of practice, but it won't take long to bring us all up to speed.

Are we concerned at all about genders, or just race/class? I don't know if it matters to anyone else (or you, wise GM), but I'm okay with doing either if it means a balanced team.

I agree with Chachi and want a balanced team. I will happily play a mage or rogue. Hannah, are you going to make Tempest your character for this game? If so, I'll make a dual-wield rogue but prolly not a Dalish since we have 2 already. I'm interested in making a city elf if that works for the group.

Let's decide what we're making so we can make them ;)

I'm not too worried about gender balance. I expect that Artemis and Guildford will play males, so that's representation enough if the rest of you would prefer to play as females. As long as it isn't *all* female Dalish elves (or all male surface dwarves, for that matter), I'm content. In Thedas, it seems as if gender is less a defining part of one's identity than race or occupation, and my goal was always to avoid a team with an exclusive bias in any direction. I'm spoiling nothing when I say that part of the plot involves the complicated relationship between Dalish and humans, so it was imperative to have both sides represented in the party. We have that now, and if we get a city elf in the mix, it would be even better.

Okay I will play a female, city elf dual-wield rogue!

Is there a place where we put who our characters are, or do we send the info to berelinde to keep it a surprise?

Please send your character sheet - the one with all the numbers and stats and secret info - to me. You can either copy/paste it into a PM or send it to me via email at berelinde"@"gmail"."com (remove the quotation marks for the address).

Please post your character bio - the portrait and publicly-known information - in a new threat. People will want to ooh and ah over each character, and it would be a shame if somebody's character got buried in discussion that wasn't about her.

Ooooh, Hannah. If you play Tempest, I'll be a happy girl indeed. I love Tempest. I'm gonna roll up a human lady mage, then. Off to the Rinmaru doll makers!!

I've been working on my character, but I can't seem to complete registration at Invisible Castle. It won't send me an email confirmation. I've been saving the links to my rolls, though, so I hope that's okay for now.

That's fine! The only thing registration allows you to do is categorize your rolls by campaign. It isn't strictly necessary.

I think the issue with Invisible Castle is that they got hit hard by spambots a couple of years ago. They instituted really harsh registration practices in an effort to cut down on the spammers, and the site admin doesn't check the "awaiting approval" list as often as he or she should. It's possible that months could pass before the admin gets around to it.

In the meantime, keep linking rolls. Even with limited functionality, it's 900% better than the other site.

Thanks for putting up with the hassles!

Not a hassle at all! I'm working on my character now. When does it need to be complete?

Also, here's a downloadable character sheet for anyone who's interested:

Thanks for posting the link!

There's no firm deadline for posting the character sheets. I'd like to start the warm-up round sometime before the end of June, but either this week or next is fine.

Hey I'm working on my character's background. She's a city elf so I would like to know which city we'll be closest to so I can include that in my story.

Also, since my character is living in the city currently, I didn't put travel rations or a tent or anything like that in my inventory because I didn't think she'd have them on hand. Will I have an opportunity to buy them if needed or should I just buy them now?

Thanks!

Glad to see you're getting into the backstory!

The city depends on what you want to do with her. Is she recently out of the alienage, or has she be traveling for a while? If she's just out of the alienage, Denerim is probably closest. Vintiver, where the story takes place, is on the fringes of the Brecilian Forest, so you could also be from Gwaren or even Redcliffe, if you'd prefer it.

You should probably plan on buying the stuff you need before you set out. Your character, as well as any humans, will have answered the local bann's call for adventurers to solve Vintiver's problems, so you will have been on the road for at least a week or two before you arrive. The Dalish partymembers (unless they specify a specific clan) will have been in Vintiver before, but more on that in a little while.

Am I the only one who has never done this before? I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed by all this info and don't even know where to start. It looks like it will take several hours just to do this character sheet thing alone!

Can someone just tell me what I need to do first? This is feeling more like work than fun :(

No, you aren't the only one. Fiance was at a total loss, and he's been playing DnD since we were 9.

I'm on Skype right now if you want to do it together.

Edit: Actually, I based the example character off of your preferences. If you wanted, you could just use that character (changing the stats or not at your pleasure) and be done with the whole painful process.

If you went that route, all you would have to do would be supply a portrait and equipment. Everything else is done.

WOW!!! That is a great idea! I just might do that! Thank you!

I did promise that I'd be gentle with new players. :)

There is going to have to be some dice-rolling once gameplay begins in earnest, but we'll *all* be doing the opening encounter together, with open die rolls, explanations, and do-overs if necessary.

Yeah, try not to worry too much about details. This goes for everyone.

And don't faint when you see the sample encounter thread. Yes, it looks complicated, but that's only because it's the first time you're seeing it. After we go through the walkthrough encounter, it will all seem like old hat. And if there's something you want to do, but don't know what rules apply, describe it. Odds are good that there are provisions for it already. If not, we'll come up with something.
