Let's go back to the (video) game for a moment. In the Mage Origin, Lily says that the wards need to feel the touch of mana. She says "Any spell will do," so I'm going to extrapolate that to mean that creatures and objects that are sensitive to magic are capable of detecting it. That might also explain why templars like Ser Bryant are capable of sensing that the Warden is a mage. The lyrium in his blood heightens his sensitivity. It might also explain why Kirkwall templars don't have the ability. For one thing, they're standing on top of a hellmouth and there is probably too much ambient magic to narrow it down. For another, it seems that Kirkwall templars receive more lyrium than those in Ferelden. They may be amped up too much already to notice localized spikes.

So I'm going to rule that as a "Yes."

Edit: That's actually a good point, Chachi. I'm going to rule that they can detect a presence and perhaps intent (hostile vs. benevolent) but not a specific "flavor," e.g. they can't tell if it's Heroic Offense or Heal, but they know it won't hurt them.

Hush your face. Tessa smells AWESOME. Like Mabari puppies and rain.

Oh wait, that's wet dog, isn't it?

*nod* Ok, thanks. I will react to that or not when it's my turn again. :D

Thanks for the clarification, Berelinde! I figured they'd be able to feel the magic pulsing through them (i.e. Etienne: "PLEASE DON'T KILL ME havesomemagicskthx"), but didn't know much more than that.

Bface - Etienne just turned your warrior into a beautiful Orlesian butterfly. <3

Yeah, I don't know what's up with that. It seems as if all of the appearance mods have lots of stuff for humans and elves, but the dwarves get left out in the cold. And it makes no sense. Yes, you have to adjust the mesh to suit a different "skeleton," but you have to do that for elves, too.

I'll just be over here grumbling about how little modder attention my beloved Brosca receives. That's one of the reasons I would like to include Bartha in the mod. She's a great character, but there's also the matter of representation!

Edit: In other news, I heard from Boom. She's able to use a tablet to interact on the forums, so she's still around, and she's still interested in playing, but right now, going back and forth between PDF files and forums and sites with java script and all is beyond its capabilities. She's hoping that she'll be able to join up with the group at a later date. At this point, I'm torn. On the one hand, I'm eagerly looking forward to introducing her character... but I'm growing attached to the idea of having a character in the campaign myself. It really is a lot of fun interacting with this party as something other than just a moderator. Maybe it's possible to do both? Would three warriors be too many?

I believe it's from Back to Ferelden.

And I'm totally into Beldun and I hope you keep him around!

Wait, Back to Ferelden has hair? Crud, I must have deleted that chargenmorph as soon as I extracted the file. Ah, well, I can always re-extract and recompile.

In other news, Tempest goes last this round, and then we're into Round 3. I know that Bartha goes first in Round 3, but I'd like to post a summary of attack order/character status/health before hand.

And thanks for the thumbs-up on keeping Beldin in the game. I'm really looking forward to Boom joining us, and it's nice to know that it doesn't need to be accompanied by the let down of dropping an NPC. :)

I love that haircut for Rael! And yes, there are sooo many... (just not for dwarves)

Have you considered this model? It's my favorite for dwarven women because, braids. Also, unlike most of the styles that have hair flowing over the shoulders, it doesn't clip.

Nope. Honestly, I haven't got a frickin' clue what mod it was. I couldn't find it, specifically, but I found something close. It's going to clip like a mad thing, though. I've got a face morph for Rael already, so I'm thinking that my best bet is to try a few different hairstyles for her, take screenies, and give you a choice.

Yes please do this. You know what I envision for her hair based on the doll I made (my avatar) so anything close to that is just fine! I imagine she restyles her hair pretty often! :D

Tempest's hair can be up if that's easier, by the way. :)

How long is her hair, exactly? If it's a few inches below her collarbone, there's a great one with loose waves that doesn't clip at all, but if it's super-long, yeah, up might be easier. There's a gorgeous tousled bun I've been dying to use. I can make it both ways (or several, for that matter) and let you choose from a selection. But that should probably happen once we both agree on her face morph. I'm trying to get Laurelin's done at the moment, and Tempest is next on deck.

The one with the loose waves would probably be good, but we can see when you get to her. :)

Oh, I've missed that one. It's lovely! Could have used a mix between this one and 'Leliana's haircut' for the several small braids... but hey, it's nice! :)

And please continue to join us with a NPC. Bartha hasn't properly met Beldin (apart from almost bumping into him), but I'm sure they'll get along, somehow. I'd say that 3 warriors isn't too much. If we'd breeze through the fights you can always up the difficulty a bit :)

Yeah, I don't think there are any longer styles that use the small braids, even for humans or elves. It is kind of strange, but there you go.

Sorry to cut things short, but this was just a teaser combat to give everyone a chance to get used to it. Plus, morale is a thing. A lot of the time, enemies *will* turn and flee. There will be plenty more combat later!

Are we doing alright with it though? The combat, I mean. You're not wanting to tear your hair out at us, are you? :)

Tearing my hair out? Absolutely not! You guys are doing great! Even those that were a little hesitant about it had everything right already and needed nothing but confirmation that they were doing it right.

No matter how many times we do combat, somebody will always forget something. It happens during tabletop sessions, too. When it does, we'll do just what we're doing here, and somebody will flag the post as needing a correction. I say "somebody" because there will be times when the person who forgets something will be me. We're human, we all make mistakes, and there's nothing we can't fix with the help of the "Edit Post" button. :)

Oh, yeah. I forgot. We're now in Free Roleplay mode until the next game post. It's already Thursday, so it's possible that we may still be roleplaying when the weekend hits. Let's play it by ear and potentially delay the next game post for a few days if people are still busy doing stuff.

Sweet, so outside of conflict can mages go heal? Or do they get back heal points so fast that it doesn't even matter?

Etienne would do it either way, just wasn't sure if we even needed to roll that out.

I'm glad you brought that up!

You don't automatically regain hit points after combat.

Any character can attempt a Heal action (a Major Action). It's an ability test based on Cunning, so the format is

AbilityTest(TN=11) = 3d6(Cunning) + Cunning + Focus(Heal)(+2)

Characters who have selected the starting talent Chirurgy get Cunning(Heal) focus automatically.

The same character may not attempt to use the Heal action on the same wounded person more than once.

Any wounded person may take a breather, engaging in no activity more strenuous than conversation for 5 minutes, and regain 5+Constitution+Level in health. A character who is at 0 health cannot take a breather. They are dying and must receive help from another character.

You can sleep. Sleep for 6 continuous hours restores 10+Constitution+Level in health.

You can receive magical healing. The Heal spell is the most usual kind.

This is covered on page 62 of the Players' Guide, if anybody wants to look it up.

Just to state the blatantly obvious, that's the kind of thing that goes in the Game Thread.

Sometimes, characters will be party to information based on their background or their unique skill set. When that happens, I'll send the player a PM. If the player chooses to share it, they should do so in the Game Thread, but they may keep it a secret if they like. In the case of expert knowledge, I'll usually only send the info to one person (unless more than one character has the particular skill set). Once the info is revealed, I'll leave it to the players whether their characters would know it, too. Sometimes, characters who grow up in cities will know/notice things that wilderness-based or village-born characters do not, and other times, it will be the other way around, but there is a chance of some overlap. When the only RP impact is to nod and say "Yeah, that's what I always heard," I'll leave it up to the player to decide.

Here's a question=I'm keeping track of my xp, because I'm neurotic like that. Do you also keep track, or is it up to each of us? (I know it's something that GMs can have their own way of doing, so I figured I would ask. :) )

You're going to have to keep track.

I keep track of encounter experience, combat or otherwise, but I may award a few bonus experience points here and there for exceptional roleplaying without writing it down.

Most of the time, experience comes in chunks of 100 points. An easy encounter is worth 100 points, an average encounter is worth 200 points, and a challenging encounter is worth 300 or more points. Considering that this encounter was over before most players got to make a second action, I'd say it was routine, a step below easy.

Chachi and I are doing a joint post for Beldin and Etienne. They should be back in play soon.
