Also-- let me get this straight: The innkeeper is offering the entire party a silver piece EACH if they just walk down the rode and check on some guy?
I feel like I'm missing something here lol Does he live really far away?

I see... thanks!!! Hmm I can see now it's going to take me time to decide what Auren will do
Because yeah that will stand out to him as odd... he has a VERY suspicious nature. I will probably formulate my reply tonight.
And thanks about the dice rolling; I wasn't sure how that worked. I'll be perfectly honest, I'm still a little nervous about doing this.
Chachi, that was a great explanation.
But I want to steal someones pants!
And you may attempt it, if you wish! There's someone in the room who's drunk enough not to notice, but I would require you to make a Perception(Seeing) test to find out which one that is.
Okay, when do we start rolling dice and stuff?
Unless the die roll is hidden, i.e. you are passing a concealed archer and asking you to roll dice would give away the surprise (that's why I asked for the 20 x 3d6 rolls), I will always ask you to roll dice, as I did with Mahumia. I said that if she wants to identify the drunk, she needs to roll 3d6+Perception(Seeing) ability score. She would do that, and then tell me the result. I would say that she spotted the drunk. Mind you, I would *always* say that she spotted the drunk because the player thinks every roll is successful unless the consequences prove otherwise.
Berelinde, when you get a chance to see this~ what is the name of Keeper Orrel's clan?
Eladiel

Roleplaying may very well include the expression of skepticism! You can ask her why she is offering so much coin to walk three miles and back.
Yup, sounds absurd and we are totally allowed to react to that. Personally, I'd see that as a sign that something was amiss. Etienne won't, though, because he has no concept of income or coins in general. If your character would, he could be like wtf and stuff.
We really only roll when we need to, the rest is storytelling. If I want to talk to you, we can talk. If I'm suspicious of you and want to use my skills to pick up on something, Berelinde will tell me to roll.
P'much. It's an invitation to RP, and every character will have his or her own take of it. Maybe Auren picked up on the improbable generosity. Rael reacted to the fact that the Innkeeper singled her out.
Chachi, that was a great explanation.
Seriously. It looks like you guys don't need me anymore. I guess I might as well go home.
Oh, wait, I am home. I guess I'll just have to catch up on the game thread and see what people are doing. ![]()
I'm still posting responses to everyone's excellent role-playing posts, but I wanted to duck in and say how awesome the group is shaping up to be. I know that some of you are experienced role-players, even if the medium is not always play-by-post, and it shows. As for those of you who have never role-played except in a CRPG, you're doing great! ![]()

*Arishok's voice* No.
You can't go anywhere. We need you. ![]()

I also want to chime in with how great this group is shaping up. Everyone's got such awesome characters, and the roleplay's been really good. ![]()
My husband is watching how this shapes up, because we've been trying to figure out a viable way to play something (Either Dragon Age or Shadowrun, actually) that could include my best friend, my brother and his wife, hubby's sister and her husband. We all live all over the place, and have such disparate schedules, that this looks like it might be a good way to go. *grin*

This is the first time I RP in a play-by-post game and so far it's been a really fun experience for me.Everyone's characters are amazing and I can't wait for my own character to interact and get to know them better. ![]()
She specified that she would not begin her performance until after the mess on stage was cleaned up. Haran finished cleaning the stage just as the conversation about Kesla's request was ending.
I also wanted to wait until everyone was done talking to Kesla so she would have everyone's full attention. ![]()
Don't worry Berelinde, the pants-stealing was a bit of an inside joke! For those who did not get the reference: The gamers
He went out for a bucket before the convo happened, and he set to work before Kesla approached the party. But it takes a while...
Just going to drop this here. In our weekly tabletop session of this adventure, the group (mostly mages and rogues) kept getting creamed in combat, so I gave them Beldin as an NPC warrior. He soon gained the nickname "Beldin the Absorbent" because he could soak up a lot of damage before he keeled over.

I only hope that I may do my job and be at least partially as absorbent as Good Ser Beldin. ![]()

Hmm... so if we aren't adventuring until tomorrow, what are our characters supposed to do now?
And why did Rael have to do some dice rolling to play music?
Thanks as usual for putting up with my ignorant questions ![]()

The pen-and-paper version of RPGs isn't completely different from the computer version. Sure, you can begin the campaign without officially introducing the first quest (or giving characters the opportunity to voluntarily accept it), but that doesn't work in every situation. When the first quest is "Escape the Spider Lair," starting the game with the party's capture makes sense, but when the first quest is "Rescue the Captive Prince," you can't really start the game with the quest underway because players want to know why their mercenary characters who don't even like princes in the first place are bothering to save his lazy arse. So that's why we started the game where we did.
The rest of the evening is open scratch space. This is a good time to interact with other player characters or with game NPCs. You have the main quest, but you never know when a side-quest may be lurking around somewhere if only you talk to the right NPC. That doesn't mean you are obligated to walk around chatting up every character, but I will generally draw some attention toward characters who may have something to say. In the pre-game RP thread, I introduced a lot of rumors and side conversations as optional RP hooks. Nobody had to pursue any of them, but they were there if anyone was interested. In yesterday's plot post, I described one NPC in some detail. It's kind of like Chekhov's Gun. In this case, the character I described is only the placeholder NPC who's standing in for Boom's character (I didn't want to just drop him into the game like an unexpected water balloon), so he isn't really there for the RP, but he does have a story about why Tarl Dale isn't present, what he's doing in town, and what he'd like you to do for him if you have a minute. Players can also probe for unplanned side quests. If they're looking for some extra RP or some extra experience (the two are often the same), they might poke around at random NPCs, chatting some up or picking their pockets to see if anything interesting turns up. Anybody remember Correspondence Interruptus?
Also, I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't give your characters opportunities to pursue individual development arcs. That's one of the reasons your character sheet contains an area for personal goals and ambitions. It helps me include subplots that will be of personal interest to your character. They're entirely optional and you won't be penalized for not writing anything down, but you might want to look over your character concept again and decide if there are any plot lines you'd like to explore. You may change them at any time. (Please note that it may take me a little while to work personal plot arcs into the game. A goal to improve bardic abilities and reputation is easy to work into the game, and indeed, it's something I'd better work in any time the party enters a town with a tavern, but a quest to retrieve a lost ancestral blade may require a complete adventure.)
Among other things, Rael is a minstrel. I suppose it is possible for her to sing and play as the party progresses through the quest, but that would be unlikely to net her any extra coin (or any extra experience). So she has to perform while she's in town. She's rolling dice because success is not assumed. Should her performance be well received, she will gain a small experience boost and The Arbor's patrons are likely to pay her for entertaining them.
I've already got one! The Peacock. Seems as good a title as anything...
(bramblefae and I are in chat btw)
