Well, the other PbP forum I'm part of does our combat in more of a storyline format (with each person contributing for their own character) rather than the the way you would for a tabletop game. How well it works depends a lot on the maturity of the writers, but with players who don't try to god mode there haven't been many issues. Combat has a very different tone, but we get through it much faster and there's less of a burden on any particular person keeping track of everything.

I'm not necessarily saying we have to do the same thing since I know that's pretty far from your intentions for this game, but I just wanted to throw that out there as a concept that could potentially be borrowed from a little bit to keep things streamlined. :)

My main reservations about leaving combat completely open to RP have to do with player need for drama. Yeah, it happens. I've also had players request combat specifically to sustain life-threatening injuries. That's challenged me as a GM, as I've had to keep throwing **** at the party until it crashed.

At this point, I'm kinda like, If you want to do it, do it.

Edit: Deleted way too much TMI.

There's a bit to say about the party that's attacking the camp, but by all means, get everyone on their legs and prepared to defend!

Oh Ruth, I'm so sorry to hear that. :( I can only imagine how much anxiety you must be experiencing! *hugs*

Nothing game-related needs to be resolved right now if you need to take more time.

Anyway, I need to edit that. I keep forgetting people who aren't us can see that.

What do you propose? I'm open to suggestions.

Well, my suggestion at this point would be to try having combat as more of an open RP. I understand (and honestly to an extent share) your reservations. That said, I would rather be able to continue the story in an imperfect medium than not be able to continue at all, and it seems like we're at the point where we need to make some compromises if we want to go forward. This RP is important enough to me that I'd really like to be able to go forward in some way.

Alright, maybe this time, we can just flip coins. If it's tails, you hit. If you hit, flip another coin. If it's tails again, you get to do a stunt. There are as many of these things as there are of you, and each of them is already very close to each of you. They take 4 hits from a small weapon (1d6+something), 3 hits from a medium weapon (2d6+something), or 2 hits from a large weapon (3d6+something). At any point, a stunt counts as a hit, so if Tessa or Mercuriel hits it once with a stunt, it's dead. Bartha would need 2 hits and 2 stunts. Arcane lance counts as a small weapon, as does an arrow, since it's a 1d weapon.

When half of these guys are down, they flee.

Sounds good to me. We can see how it goes this time if we do it that way.

And hopefully, by the time the next combat rolls around (which won't be for a while), I'll have put together a tutorial for the combat spreadsheet and we'll be able to share the book keeping end.

My opinion:  This group is mature enough to handle roleplaying combat with a few ground rules, like the flipping a coin thing.  And frankly, the combat is bogging down the entire process.  It makes it almost painful...but that's just me.  I've always been a player that focused on roleplay and very little dice-rolling even when I was storytelling.  Ask BFace, she's sat through my remarkably simple Vampire RPs.  ;)

Yeah, honestly for me the combat is just something I have to get through to get to the next bit of story. ;)

I agree with both ladies above,I do however appreciate how complicated the combat is and I do enjoy it,but to be perfectly honest at this point, the interactions between our characters have become so interesting that I can't wait to skip to the RP part.If role-playing combat makes it easier for you Ruth, then I'm totally down with it.

So I guess we're waiting for input from our other players at this point?

I'm going to give it one more day, and if no word from Meli or Ann... well, the game goes on.

Sorry guys for such a long absence. It is getting down to the last days before I leave Japan and I am extremely busy. I cannot participate in any RP until after I am back in America and even then I will be busy with family plans/friends/boyfriend for a bit. I don't get back until the 23rd of March and we will have to see after that. Sorry for such a late response. Things are crazy here.

Wow, crazy busy indeed! :) Maybe we should go ahead and get started, and you can jump back in whenever you get a chance?

I'm alive, I'm alive, and I normally hold my action in combat because I am the lame and hate combat. I'm a fake d&d gamer girl. I do like luck determining if I land my heals, though. I don't think my opinion should matter so much, though, since I play healers to avoid combat. XD

I'm all for going ahead and letting Ann jump back in when she gets all settled and has more time. :D  (I'm glad, Ann, that it's good things keeping you busy. :) )

I'm not dead, and I haven't lost interest. I'll post the combat map and the first round baddie rolls tonight, and then coin-flips away!

News: Still working hella hours. That is never going to change... until it does, at which point, I will be unemployed and I'll have all the time in the world until I find a new job. At this point, it's looking like June 1 will be my first day of unemployment, and I'm kinda looking forward to it. I've been working way, way too hard. I haven't had a day off since January. My sister is stage 4, but her energy level at the moment is higher than it has been in a long time. She qualified for government assistance, so she's actually getting treatment. The chemo is kicking her hard, but when she's between treatments, she bounces back pretty well. Married life is great. So, all things considered, it's taking the good with the bad.

Sorry for lack of communication! I hadn't checked to see if anything new had been posted. I'll post for Tempest as soon as I can, but likely won't be till tomorrow as I have to work late tonight. Apologies for the delay! :)

No worries, I've been trapped between work, emergency home repairs, and an out of town funeral myself.

Guys, I am so sorry I've gone so long without posting. Things got crazy and time got away from me. I didn't mean to ditch you.

I'm a little sour on all things DA right now but I'll try to get my head on straight again.
