As the game begins, we'll have a lot of skill checks and combat rolls. Post links to the results here.

Exception: character creation. For the official character sheets, you won't want other players to know your character's ability scores. Send me those (and the verification links) in a PM.

About the Dragon Die...

Most die rolls in the game are 3d6 rolls, meaning that you roll three 6-sided dice and take a sum, but the individual die results are important. In combat, rolling doubles means that you get to do a stunt, as determined by the Dragon Die. Since we use electronic dice, the first roll is the Dragon Die.

If my roll is 5, 3, 3, my unmodified attack roll is 11 (it's always modified by things like strength, etc, but NVM for now), and it contains doubles. You get a number of stunt points equal to your Dragon Die, 5. You must spend them all at once. So, if you were casting a Winter's Grasp spell, you could use Puissant Casting to increase the spellpower by 3 (3 stunt points) and you could use Mighty Spell to increase the damage by 1d6 (2 stunt points).

Skill check!

Throughout the game, there will be unannounced skill checks, usually to detect something that most players won't see. I can't very well ask for die rolls at the time, because  that would definitely broadcast the fact that something was going on that most characters wouldn't see and it would ruin the surprise. With that in mind, I'm going to ask everyone to send me 20 x 3d6 rolls. I'll cross them off as they're used, and ask you for more when they're all gone. Typical format, from Invisible Castle. Note that doubles are marked in blue. You can send yours to me in a PM or post them here, your choice.

Each player should post a set of dice rolls in the format posted above. Please link to your Invisible Castle roll. Yes, I know, your membership isn't approved because the Invisible Castle site administrator is falling behind on site maintenance, but you should still be able to link rolls.

There are times during gameplay when I'll need to see if your character notices something or avoids an emerging hazard. I can't ask you to roll at the time it happens, because that would kind of ruin the surprise, but I don't want to deprive players of the ability to roll their own dice. Posting rolls in advance allows me to do that. I'll let you know by PM when I've run out of dice rolls and I need you to roll some more.

I keep getting an error when I try to roll 20 3D6... am I doing anything wrong or is there something up with the site? I fill in '20' at number of rolls and '3D6' at dice.

If it won't let you do all 20 at once, you could try breaking it down into smaller chunks.

Apparently it works if I put down extra text after the 3D6...Ah well: Linky!

Yes. You would go to Invisible Castle, type in "Auren" in the "Character name" field, type in "20" in "Number of dice" field and type in "3d6" in the "Dice" field.

Or you could designate someone (like me or any willing player) to roll your dice for you.

I don't mind you doing it ^^ if it's too much trouble I'll do it but it'll have to wait till tomorrow because I'm on my iPad now.

On an individual basis, I don't mind. Many players prefer to roll their own dice, so I will always leave that option open to them - and I leave it open to you, should you decide to do it yourself once you get used to the system - but I see no harm in making a few accessibility accommodations. You're learning this on the fly, and there's no sense in making it harder than it has to be.

I thought that just posting this thread would be good enough, but I've got stuff stashed all over the place... and now I'm losing things left, right, and center. I'm moving things to spreadsheets on Google Drive so that no matter where I am, I don't lose stuff.

Now that we have more people, we're going to have to be a little more careful about linking rolls.

There has to be a link. Math happens, and sometimes, somebody can't add. A lot of the time, that's me. Linking the roll lets me check the math and make sure there aren't any typos like 3d64 instead of 3d6+4 or whatever.

The character name *has* to be filled in. I'm pretty flexible about most things, but I don't want to see T for Tempest, for example, because that might also be Tessa. You don't have to worry about capitalization or anything, but it has to be recognizable.

Managing combat is a bit of a chore. It has to be done, and I'm not complaining, but doing these two things will make may job a lot easier.

Now that we're getting into the heart of the adventure, swapping characters in or out will become more difficult, so I want to go over the policy about die rolls once again. Specifically, the policy about cheating.

The first time I catch it, I usually let it go unless it's truly egregious, in which case, I'll send a PM.

The second time I catch it, I send the player a PM. This is GM-to-player communication and isn't going to show up on the boards.

The third time I catch it, the player has a choice. They can retire the character and leave the game voluntarily or they may remain in the game and risk a fourth foul if they continue to cheat. If the player leaves the game voluntarily, they may continue to participate in the OOC thread and the Gallery, and they may bring in a new character at the start of the next adventure, if they wish. They will revert to 2 fouls if they retire the character and sit out the rest of the adventure, but this courtesy will only be extended once. If they reach 3 fouls a second time, they will not have the option to bring in a new character.

If there is a fourth occurrence, both the player and the character are permanently out of the game and the player will be banned from the group.

Just so we're clear on this, no one has left the game because of cheating yet. Players may always take a hiatus if they want one.

One thing I will *not* do: roll dice for a player to avoid cheating. First of all, it's obvious, and I'm not big on public humiliation. Second, it's more work for me, and I don't need that. Yes, I will gladly roll for vacationing players if they want. If it lets them stay active in the game while posting from mobile devices, that's great! But as a routine thing? No.
