The taint is the Prime Gestalt of the old gods' essences

 

 The taint is the darkened souls of the old gods trying to get back into their bodies.

 

The true spirits/souls of the old gods used to be pure golden light trapped in the golden city. From there they whispered in the fade to the Magisters, secretly trying to be released from the prison and returned, somehow, to their bodies. The taint maybe was a coincidence, or a flaw. Their spirits used to be the pure golden light of the city, seen by the visitors of the fade and thus dubbed the golden city, they, however, were pure beings that lived out side of creation, they were not created. The Magisters arrived and they were exposed to creation. The magisters instantly corrupted the old gods' pure, exposed souls of light, through their dark hearts, and transformed the light into the darkness known as the taint. The Magisters were turned into the first darkspawn, and the darkened essences of the old gods seeks their "bodies" through the darkspawn, or tainted beings, following their original goal.

 

The taint returns the tainted soul of the old god, corrupting also the "body", the selection is random. Dumat was risen first cause the taint reached him first, and gave him his soul, the taint then works under dumat, its prime gestalt.

I don't really understand how people say his lines prove it was already tainted. He says, "The light. The golden light. You offered the power of the gods themselves. But it was black. Corrupt. Darkness ever since. The city. It was suppose to be golden. It was supposed to be ours." 

 

Couldn't he just mean that the city "was black" as soon as they got close to the city? And since they arrived there there was "darkness ever since"? "It was suppose to be golden! It was supposed to be ours!" sounds like it could have been that the city was supposed to be golden (when they possessed it), but just when the magisters thought it was theirs, it turned black. I don't see how his statements couldn't fit into the pre-existing Black City lore. Maybe they are meant to imply that the city was always black, but, as for me, I don't really see that as a concrete statement, tbh.

I interpreted this as it being darkness for them, not the city. As in, when they reached the Black City, its taint infected them.

Hmmm… Maybe, I shouldn't have killed him… Nah, who am I kidding? I'm glad he's dead. That is interesting, though. I wonder what those "alarming implications" were.
