I seem to get this error during conversations and it seems random. When I enter a choice on the dialogue wheel I occasionally hear an error/warning ping and when I exit to my desktop it says file not found and strings of numbers and letters. I'm not kidding about the random part. I don't know what triggers it. I could repeat the choices that led up to the error and have nothing bad happen.
It's annoying because it means I must constantly save.
I have the retail PC DVD version.

That it doesn't reliably repeat is very strange. Normally something like this would be a clear time for a re-install, but if it works some of the time, it doesn't sound so simple.

No other games or software have been giving you trouble?

I have to say ME is the only game that has given me trouble.

I'll try re-install now and see if that fixes it.

I got the error:

General protection fault!

History: GZLibFile::~GZLibFile() Address = 0x11579f01 (filename not found) [in

C:\\Program Files\\Mass Effect\\Binaries\\MassEffect.exe]

Address=0x332ce080 (filename not found)

Address=0xffccffff (filename not found)

Address=0xffccffff (filename not found)

Second time the error happened while talking to Ashley, but it happened at a different point than last time it triggered with her. Other sketchy conversations include talking to Dr. Chakwas and that engineer guy during Bring Down the Sky.

I take it you're at least not getting the random "file not found" errors anymore?

If it's randomly crashing, I would assume for the moment you have a good install. What video card do you have? NVidia cards have been known to have trouble with ME. You could try updating your video drivers and see if that knocks anything into place.

I've had some trouble with Dr. Chakwas myself, and I have an ATI card. (She seems nice, but behind her back she's secretly plotting to give me GPFs...) Not all that often though; if you've already had two crashes in one hour, that's not a good sign. :/

I would guess that you have a memory problem or NTFS problem. Iwould run Memtest86+ which you can download from www.memtest.org. I would also run a chkdsk on your C: drive.

I have Nvidia GeForce GTX 260.

I updated the driver maually, but talking to Ashley about her family still doesn't go well.

I turned the screen resolution down to 16:9 instead of 16:10. Everything seems alright, and hopefully it'll stay that way.
