I've thought about it. A few of my child hood friends served in the armed forces ( in the US ) in the late 90's to the mid 2000's and I've seen the service bring direction to their lives, build self esteem as well as provide them with an education and give them a sense of family and brotherhood ( turn loners into team players ).

One of the main reasons why I have not done it in my youth is because I am a very fussy eater, I'm allergic to a lot of stuff and as such it just makes me a difficult person to accommodate even though I possess a lot a personality traits that would work well in the service. I can't imagine myself living off military rations.

I have no interest in joining plus it would most likely be too hard for me but I have a friend who's in the army and one of my teachers from secondary (high) school spent some time in the air force. The NZ military is more of a peacekeeping force and provides assistance with logistics.
