Fight A
Leliana vs Varric: Leliana is agile, essentially a trained assassin and a seasoned warrior, helping end the fifth Blight. I love Varric, but he's a merchant with a crossbow.

Fight B
Zevran vs Isabela: Hard to decide, but when it comes down to it, we've really only seen Zevran fail. While he's a Crow, we've seen Isabela specifically fight her way out of several situation.

Fight C
Nathaniel Howe vs Sebastian Vael: Pompous prince-priest versus Grey Warden? Hmm, I wonder...

Fight D
Tallis vs Sigrun: Because I haven't played MotA yet.

Fight E
Alistair vs Aveline: I love you Alistair. You know I do. But in a one on one fight... it's Aveline. If it makes you feel better, I think it would be very, very close.

Fight F
Sten vs Fenris: Fenris has his hand glowy thing, and not much else. Again it kind of comes down to season warrior vs mercenary.

Fight G
Oghren vs Grey Warden Carver: Difficult, especially since GW Carver would probably kick more ass than Templar Carver, but I think he would underestimate Oghren and pay dearly for it.

Fight H
Justice (Awakening) vs Loghain: Loghain is a tenacious son of a ******.

Fight I
Wynne vs Anders (DA2): What Vengeance gives Anders in raw power, Wynne makes up for with finesse, control and I feel she would know how best to use her magic to benefit her situation.

Fight J
Velanna vs Merrill (DA2): Merril would be on the defensive until Velanna overcomes her.

Fight K
Morrigan vs Grey Warden Bethany: No explanation needed

Fight L
Anders (Awakening) vs Circle Bethany: Anders' rookie status coupled with the crap Circle Bethany went through and her Force Mage specialisation gives her the edge.

Fight M
Cailan vs Cullen (DA:O): DA2 Cullen would get a different answer, but Origins Cullen seems very inexperienced, whereas we do at least see Cailan fight in a huge battle (even if he does die in it)

Fight N
Ogre (DA:O) vs Shale: Death by sassing.
Fight O
Keeper Marethari (non-possessed) vs Keeper Zathrian: He has the will to live and has shown that he doesn't have an issue with killing.

Fight P
Jarvia vs Arl Rendon Howe: In a one on one battle? Don't be ridiculous Howe.

Aveline. Experience and Single-Mindedness will win her the Battle, while Alistair might lack the ultimate Resolve.

Experience? She was a bloody random soldier serving in Cailan's army. Her biggest achievement is making captain of the guard in the cesspit that is Kirkwall.

Alistair's a Grey Warden, Templar, King- his training, equipment and physical abilities are obviously superior.

Where are people getting Aveline's physical power feats? Her only feat is knocking down Hawke who was clearly not fighting back. That's not a hard thing to do, considering Aveline was in full plate.

Meanwhile Alistair fought 3 Dragons, a Broodmother, plenty Pride Demons etc.

Fight A
Varric - Has proven he knows how to handle Bianca and have no problem hitting moving targets. Don't think Leliana stand much of a chance.
Fight B
Isabela - Isabela has gotten through some pretty dicey situations compared to Zevran who seemed to fail at a lot of things before the Warden came around.
Fight C
Sebastian Vael - If he's fighting with the fury he had at the end of DA2 he would take Howe down.
Fight D
Sigrun - I feel like her dwarven resilience would beat Tallis and her fancy moves.
Fight E
Aveline - With all of her experience I believe she would eat Alistair for breakfast.
Fight F
Sten - This one could go either way but I think Sten would win, simply because of his size.
Fight G
Oghren - He just has more and greater experience than young litter Carver.
Fight H
Loghain - Not much can stand against him.
Fight I
Anders - Another one that could go either way. I think Anders would take it only because he's more used to fighting for his life.
Fight J
Merrill - Would take her down without much trouble.
Fight K
Morrigan - Don't believe a lot of people would be able to win against Morrigan. She's simply too powerful.
Fight L
Anders - As mentioned above, he's more used to fighting for his life.
Fight M
Cailan - Cullen seemed very inexperienced in DAO compared to Cailan. I think he would wipe the floor with him.

Fight N
Shale - Size might go to Ogre but Shale would have too much fun squish them.
Fight O
Keeper Zathrian - While both are powerful Zathrian seems way more ruthless and willing to to whatever it takes so survive.
Fight P
Jarvia - A toss up but I'd give Jarvia a slight edge.

ROUND 1

Fight A
Leliana vs Varric - the talking would be fierce but hardened Leliana at the end of DAO would prevail in a close match
Fight B

Zevran vs Isabela - I really really want to go Zevran but in a straight up one-on-one gotta go with the duelist Isabela
Fight C

Nathaniel Howe vs Sebastian Vael - didn't play Sebastian's DLC so must pass on this one
Fight D

Tallis vs Sigrun - didn't play MotA so must pass on this one
Fight E

Alistair vs Aveline - my Alistair at the end of DAO would take down Aveline at the end of DA2 but I think it would be a good fight
Fight F

Sten vs Fenris - Sten was tough but brittle. I'm going with Fenris here
Fight G

Oghren vs Grey Warden Carver - Oghren - even if he had to fight sober with one hand tied behind his back
Fight H

Justice (Awakening) vs Loghain - as much as I hate him going to have to go with Loghain's brutal take-no-prisoners approach here
Fight I

Wynne vs Anders (DA2) - tough one but going to have to give a slim edge to Anders here - Justice/Vengeance doesn't react at all well to violence directed towards him
Fight J

Velanna vs Merrill (DA2) - Merrill's innocent outward demeanor overlays a very tough minded inner warrior and that when push comes to shove she will prevail
Fight K

Morrigan vs Grey Warden Bethany - Morrigan, 'nuff said.
Fight L

Anders (Awakening) vs Circle Bethany - Anders ability to get himself out of trouble (or at least out of the tower repeatedly) helps him prevail here
Fight M

Cailan vs Cullen (DA:O) - DA2 Cullen might stand a chance but Cailan isn't a mage and is a trained warrior so Cailan here
Fight N
Ogre (DA:O) vs Shale - Shale - she's both tougher and meaner than the ogre.
Fight O

Keeper Marethari (non-possessed) vs Keeper Zathrian - gotta go with Zathrian here. Not close
Fight P

Jarvia vs Arl Rendon Howe - In a one-on-one fight, Jarvia hands down. Howe would never know what kept hitting him.

ROUND 1

Fight A
Leliana - As awesome as Bianca is, bows are just faster than crossbows, and Leliana can always get close if she needs to.

Fight B
Isabela - She did say that Zevran had ******-poor aim.

Fight C
Nathaniel Howe - Sebastian spent most of his life in the Chantry, where he wouldn't have seen much action.

Fight D
Sigrun - Legionnaire Scout makes her practically unkillable.

Fight E
Aveline - She's got the advantage of experience, and since she punched a darkspawn to death she gets my vote.

Fight F
Fenris - His special abilities give him the edge.

Fight G
Oghren - Since he's Warrior Caste he's been training/fighting his entire life while Carver's mostly been running from city to city.

Fight H
Loghain - It could go either way but Loghain has a lot more experience in the real world.

Fight I
Anders (DA2) - Justice/Anders took a sword to the chest and shrugged it off like it was nothing, while Wynne is reluctant to use Faith too much since the spirit's the only thing keeping her alive.

Fight J
Merrill (DA2) - She has the same Keeper abilities that Velanna has, but she's also a blood mage.

Fight K
Grey Warden Bethany - At first I would have said Morrigan but GW Bethany's really tough, and Force Magic+Fireball is pretty deadly.

Fight L
Anders (Awakening) - Anders is pretty crafty when he wants to be and Circle Bethany's doesn't have a whole lot of real life experience.

Fight M
Cullen (DA:O) - We haven't see much of either of them, but Cailan got himself killed at the beginning of the Blight while Cullen's survived an impressive number of massacres (the Circle Tower in Ferelden, the Qunari Invasion, the Kirkwall Rebellion) so he's got potential.

Fight N
Shale - Ogres are squishy. Shale is not.

Fight O
Keeper Zathrian - The guy really knows how to hold a grudge.

Fight P
Jarvia - Well they'd probably both try to have the other assassinated before agreeing to a one-on-one fight, but if they did fight I'd bet on Jarvia.

Aveline was an officer in Cailan's army, not a random soldier, and automatically more experienced than Alistair by virtue of being about 10 years older.

Also your analysis of Alistair's abilities and feats doesn't work for everyone because not everybody made Alistair king, or brought him along to kill dragons and Broodmothers (or even killed those dragons). I mean in that case you can also say that Aveline killed a High Dragon, a Forgotten One, Pride Demons, Rock Wraiths hell even the Arishok if you took the full-on brawl approach.

Wow Alistair vs Aveline is an upset. A lot of people didn't read the comics. Dragonblood folks. Bird, you going to update the OP with the new battles or start from here?

Both, so people won't have to go back to page 1 to decide on their vote but newcomers will also know where we are at in the tournament.

To be fair in a real fight they'd both just end up in bed :P

Round 2:

A - Isabela.  By her own admission, Leliana prefers non-violent solutions, and she has more moral constraints.  Isabela's more willing to get her hands dirty.

B - Nathaniel.  Though we think of him more as a ranged dps, it did take 4 wardens to capture him at the vigil.

C - Sten.  Eventually, one of his swings would just break Aveline's shield (or the arm it's strapped to).

D - Loghain.  Though in round one I picked Oghren to win his match and Loghain to lose his, I think Loghain would take this one because he actually bothers with tactics, while Oghren is more charge in and swing.

E - Merrill.  I think Daisy would get the upper hand here because Wynne has had little exposure to Dalish magic, while Merrill has seen Anders and possibly Circle Bethany in action.

F - Morrigan.  As soon as Anders starts haranging her about how she should do more to help other mages, she'd just obliterate him.

G - Shale.  If an Ogre can pick up Cailan in squeeze him to death, so can Shale.

H - Zathrian.  Killing bandits and troublemakers for 300 years...

Are the pairings even up yet for round 2?  Is it automatically A vs B or like A vs P or randomized further?

Please don't vote for Round 2 until the pairings and rules of that round are up.

ROUND 2 - Voting is open now!

The fighting for this round has moved to the Provings Arena, where all combatants will fight to the death to ensure a spot in Round 3. They will start 15 meters apart, and the fight will last until one of both is dead. When you cast your vote, try to go off the lore and not the games' combat mechanics. I recommend looking at the Dragon Age Wiki.

When you cast your vote, write down why you think the person you voted for would win. Only vote on the fights listed below, and not the fights for Round 1. If you fail to give any reasoning or your reasoning sounds like personal preference or mere joking, your votes won't be taken into account when choosing the winners.

Fight 1

Leliana - She is both a Seeker and a Bard, hardened, and has Marjolaine's Bow

vs

Isabela - She has a ship and crew again

Fight 2

Nathaniel - He is a Warden, owns a part of Amaranthine and has the Howe Bow

vs

Sigrun - She's still a Warden and has had Legion of the Dead training

Fight 3

Aveline - She's Kirkwall's Guard-Captain and has her own Shield/Gift

vs

Sten - He's the new Arishok and has Asalaa

Fight 4

Oghren - Is a Warden and trainer of new recruits

vs

Loghain - Is a Warden and still has his training as a Fereldan general

Fight 5

Wynne - She has the Spirit of Faith inside her and has Annerin's Token

vs

Merrill (DA2) - Is a Keeper's First/Blood Mage with knowledge from the Eluvian she fixed

Fight 6

Morrigan (DA:O) - Is a Shapeshifter and has both of Flemeth's Grimoires, not carrying the OGB

vs

Anders (Awakening) - A Warden with Circle training

Fight 7

Cailan - King of Ferelden, has had training from Loghain in personal combat

vs

Shale - Has had her memory restored and she is equipped with Brilliant Crystals

Fight 8

Zathrian - A Keeper/Blood Mage, 300 years of experience

vs

Jarvia - She is a Carta Assassin/Boss

Leliana, I read Masked Empire... I know what bards can do...

Sigrun, As much as I like Nathaniel... the Legion of the Dead are bad ass for a reason.

Sten, there's a massive size difference. I think they'd be on par, but he'd come out first.

Loghain, Tons more experience.

Wynne, experience goes a long way.

Morrigan, Has tricks up her sleeves even Anders would shy away from.

Shale, he got crushed by an ogre. I'm sure Shale would do it more spectacularly.

Jarvia, I've played a mage in several different games. But rogues always eat me alive :P

Leliana - While Isabela is one of the best duelists alive Leliana has more versatility and can fight in close combat with daggers (as shown in Leliana's Song) as well as in long range with Marj's bow.

Sigrun - Nate's my boy, but Sigrun wins again due to her dwarven durability and Legion of the Dead training. Nate's no slouch and took on four Wardens, but I believe his strengths lie more in stealth and tracking.

Sten - Aveline is tough, but Sten has been a warrior from birth and has been elevated to the rank of Arishok. If Aveline could have beaten the preceding Arishok Hawke's help wouldn't have been needed.

Loghain - Oghren's berserking would be his downfall. Loghain would use his tactical awareness to tire the dwarf before landing a killing blow.

Wynne - Wynne has experience, is a Senior Enchanter, and is possessed by the strongest variant of spirits. Merril's Blood Magic could be countered with Circle training (School of Spirit) and she'd be forced to rely on her Keeper training which she never finished.

Morrigan - She has Flemeth's Grimoires. If Anders had Justice/Vengeance I think it'd be a lot closer, but he doesn't. Morrigan has fought with Wardens before and has at least a basic knowledge of their abilities/potential.

Shale - Shale would crush Cailan. He's probably had the best instruction in personal combat being heir to the Fereldan throne, but he'd be unprepared to fight a golem. With Shale's memory restored (Warrior Caste training) and her crystals she would take this.

Jarvia - Her dwarven resistance to magic might buy her enough time to get close enough with a dagger.
