Fight 1

Isabela - Isabela is an expert duelist. She's also a hardened pirate.

Fight 2

Sigrun - She's a hardy dwarf with Legion of the Dead training.

Fight 3

Aveline - She's a woman-shaped battering ram. ;)

Fight 4

Oghren - Oghren is Warrior Caste. He was born to be a warrior.

Fight 5

Merrill (DA2) - Merrill is a blood mage. Hands down she would win against Wynne.

Fight 6

Morrigan - Morrigan has more offensive magic at her disposal.

Fight 7

Shale - Shale is a nearly indestructible golem so of course she will win.

Fight 8

Zathrian - Zathrian has way more experience, and also he is a mage.

The year is 9:41 Dragon. The sky has been torn asunder, the Veil has been Breached, and the demon hordes are spreading across the lands. But that is not all this terrible event has brought us; because right here, at the gates of our beloved Denerim, portals have opened. To dimensions we never even deemed possible. Out stepped heroes whom we know from the past decade as the heroes who shaped the world into what it is today, and they seek to fight. To the death.
Cometh all, to the Markets of Denerim, to witness the greatest tournament ever held, a fortnight from now on the eve of the 17th of Justinian, and take your place in the stands. And when the time comes to decide the best warrior in all of Thedas (rogues, mages and beasts included in that title)... you will need to cast your vote.

So I suddenly got the idea of making up a Dragon Age-tournament, pitching companions and NPC's from all the games that have been released (so not Inquisition) against each other. And you guys will decide who wins. So, how does it work? Well, below I have posted 16 fights. The winner of one fight will go up against the winner of the following fight in the next round. So if Leliana wins fight A, and Zevran wins fight B, they will be each other's foes in the next round, and so and so on.

You guys will decide who wins. I'm going to ask you to read through the fights, pick the one you think would win (and try to keep it as real as possible, so Varric won't win because of his Blinding Chest-Hair or something like that), plus reasoning, and post your list down below. After a few days I will gather the votes, count them, and pick a winner for each fight, so we will know who gets to be in the next rounds. If there's a stalemate? We'll see when, and if, that happens.

The fighting for this round has moved to the Provings Arena, where all combatants will fight to the death to ensure a spot in Round 3. They will start 15 meters apart, and the fight will last until one of both is dead. When you cast your vote, try to go off the lore and not the games' combat mechanics. I recommend looking at the Dragon Age Wiki.

When you cast your vote, write down why you think the person you voted for would win. Only vote on the fights listed below, and not the fights for Round 1. If you fail to give any reasoning or your reasoning sounds like personal preference or mere joking, your votes won't be taken into account when choosing the winners.

Fight 1

Leliana - She is both a Seeker and a Bard, hardened, and has Marjolaine's Bow

vs

Isabela - She has a ship and crew again

They stand only 15 meters apart, which is not even 50 feet. Pretty close for an archer, assuming Leliana doesn't have her daggers. But one good arrow within that distance grounds Izzy and its over. Can Izzy close the gap before Leliana fires her shot, knowing Leliana is an experienced and very accurate archer? I think not(and I practice short blade combat and archery).

Fight 2

Nathaniel - He is a Warden, owns a part of Amaranthine and has the Howe Bow

vs

Sigrun - She's still a Warden and has had Legion of the Dead training

Why is this different than the Leliana/Izzy fight? Simple:Sigrun has heavy armor. Nathaniel would have to be insanely good to get his arrows through the joints of Sigrun's armor as thats likely his only chance, and from that distance, I'm going to assume Sigrun can close the gap and end him. Nathaniel will be more mobile, but he'll run out of arrows at some point. Sigrun's weapon isn't expendable.

Fight 3

Aveline - She's Kirkwall's Guard-Captain and has her own Shield/Gift

vs

Sten - He's the new Arishok and has Asala

Sten has been through much in his life, and has undergone tons of combat. Aveline has as well. Aveline goes sword and board, Sten goes two handed. So far so good. Question is, can Sten get past Aveline's shield? She has offense and defense, Sten is pure offense. Aveline has experience fighting qunari which would typically give her the edge against a qunari opponent, but Sten has battled against forces far greater than Aveline's ever encountered(namely, the Archdemon). Gonna say its an extremely close one that could go either way, but I'll give it to Sten.

Fight 4

Oghren - Is a Warden and trainer of new recruits

vs

Loghain - Is a Warden and still has his training as a Fereldan general

No question, Loghain. His experience in battle far surpasses Oghren's and Oghren is the type to get carried away, which I can absolutely see happening in this encounter. Loghain on the other hand will keep his head(haha, see what I did there) under control and outmaneuver him.

Fight 5

Wynne - She has the Spirit of Faith inside her and has Annerin's Token

vs

Merrill (DA2) - Is a Keeper's First/Blood Mage with knowledge from the Eluvian she fixed

Wynne has the experience to topple Merrill, but the elf has something Wynne does not-blood magic. And I believe that will take Wynne off guard and lead Merrill to victory. Bit of a shock tactic.

Fight 6

Morrigan - Is a Shapeshifter and has both of Flemeth's Grimoires, not carrying the OGB

vs

Anders (Awakening) - A Warden with Circle training

Morrigan is someone very special, someone who's hard to judge and has a ton going for her in battle. Anders in his Awakening state is simply not equipped to beat her in any sense. Morrigan takes this one handily.

Fight 7

Cailan - King of Ferelden, has had training from Loghain in personal combat

vs

Shale - Has had her memory restored and she is equipped with Brilliant Crystals

Cailan seems to not know how to handle extremely large opponents relative to himself. Shale will not care about the honor of a battle with the King, and will simply crush Cailan before he has a chance to do anything. Easy victory for the golem.

Fight 8

Zathrian - A Keeper/Blood Mage, 3000 years of experience

vs

Jarvia - She is a Carta Assassin/Boss

This one I see as tough, but I'm gonna give it to Zathrian under the assumption that those thousands of years of experience will come in handy, providing him a clever way to trick Jarvia and have her in a position that leads to her demise. He certainly wouldn't be against a little trickery if it leads to his survival.

^Up above.

Fight 1

Leliana - Really, really tough match. I give Leliana the edge just because of Isabellas lack of armour

Fight 2

Sigrun - Skilled as Nathaniel is, Sigrun has enough armour to get her past his initial arrows, and enough skill to easily dismantle Nathaniel when she gets in close

Fight 3

Aveline -Human shaped battering ram. Aveline has such great defensive and offensive capabilities that she ends up winning this one

Fight 4

Oghren -Tough match. Ultimately, I bring it down to the fact that, as one of the Warrior Caste, Oghren lived his entire life competing in provings. If this was a battlefield and they were each commanding armies, Loghain would win hands down. But one vs one? Loghain is getting up there in age, and Oghren has more experience in the Provings, drunk or not.

Fight 5

Merrill (DA2) - Really tough match, but ultimately I think Merrill prevails through use of blood-magic and Wynne's lack of offensive capabilities

Fight 6

Morrigan - At this point in Anders life, he simply doesn't have the means to compete with Moririgan

Fight 7

Shale - No contest. Shale squishes Cailan

Fight 8

Zathrian - Pretty sure he's 300 years old, not 3000. Regardless, he takes this one handily, even with Jarvia's natural resistance to magic.

Fight 1: Leliana, because she's just an all-around better warrior. Much more abilities and skills than Isabela.

Fight 2: Sigrun. This was difficult. Nathaniel could fight from afar, but Sigrun could just destroy him if she gets close. And I think she'll find a way to get close.

Fight 3: Aveline, because apparently you can beat Sten just by surprising him. He'll lose his precious sword as well.

Fight 4: Loghain, because Oghren is a drunk and get enraged easily. I'm sure Loghain can outsmart him.

Fight 5: Merrill (DA2). Technically Wynne could be a blood mage / arcane warrior and just stomp on everything, but if we're staying in character a bit more, I'd give the edge to Merrill. Just barely.

Fight 6: Morrigan, since Anders in Awakening simply can't match her. Anders in DA2 could have been interesting.

Fight 7: Shale. It's not even a fight. Shale can just walk and stomp Cailan.

Fight 8: Zathrian. Jarvia is deadly and all, but Zathrian has 300 years of finding evil and wrongdoings in others. Also, blood mage.

Leliana, based on her training and experience.

Sigrun, legion of the dead people are tough. It's most likely about endurance in this fight.

Sten, stronger and more disciplined

Loghain, simply because Oghren doesn't seem like the guy who uses strategy and instead just becomes angry and be aggressive. Loghain can definitely take advantage of that.

Wynne, trained in the Circle and has a spirit to fuel her.

Morrigan, she can shapeshift and I'm pretty sure Flemeth knows a lot more powerful magic than the Circle

Shale, she's a golem with dwarven training. Not only that, crystals have magical properties.

Zathrian, blood magic works on everyone. Dwarves are resistant to magic, but blood magic is blood magic. Dwarves can't be THAT resistant to it.

Fight 1

Leliana - It's close, but I'd go with Leliana. While they both have a lot of fighting experience, Leliana has had a more varied fighting experience. She also seems to have more of a drive than Isabela; while Isabela has her crew to think about, she is usually looking out for herself more often than not, and Leliana is always going for a purpose, be it as a Bard, a Sister, or a Seeker.

Fight 2

Sigrun - Sigrun is always fighting, she has to as Legion and Warden. Nathaniel is also skilled, but he doesn't have the suicidal drive that Sigrun has. I think they would just end up killing each other, but Sigrun will make sure to down her opponent even if she will die doing it because she owes her people a death.

Fight 3

Sten - Hard to go against someone who is bred and raised for war, and Sten is so good at what he does, he is now the leading warrior of his people. Aveline is a soldier as well, which means that any trickery or underhanded combat techniques are unlikely, both are honorable soldiers, giving Sten the advantage.

Fight 4

Loghain - Oghren and Loghain are good warriors, and while I would say Oghren is stronger and can probably take more of a beating, Loghain is also a strategist and has the mind of a commander. Loghain will likely go defensive to tire Oghren out since Oghren tends to be aggressive, and then he will look for an opportunity to win.

Fight 5

Wynne - She has fought in war, she has protected others from demons by herself, and is a very experienced mage. Merrill has face some squables, survived the Kirkwall incident, but she is not the experienced combatant that Wynne is. Blood magic may give her an edge, but Wynne has faced blood magic before.

Fight 6

Morrigan - Both have faced the Templars, but Morrigan has been hunted longer than Anders and has been given training unavailable at the Circle. Her life has been one of survival and she is willing to use dark arts, unlike Anders. She has every advantage over Anders.

Fight 7

Shale - I don't see how Cailan has a chance against Shale. Golems don't tire, Golems can take on waves of darkspawn alone, and even though Shale has been reduced, she is more than a match for a single human warrior who is only skilled with sword and shield. Perhaps if they were in a place with pitfalls, but in the Arena, a flat land with no obstacles, Shale wins.

Fight 8

Zathrian - Jarvia is a strong opponent, but Zathrian knows more about staying alive than her. Unless she moves fast and paralyzes with poison, Zathrian will entangle her and could probably just use blood magic to have her off herself.

Fight 1

Leliana vs Isabela: Leliana has much more versatility. Maybe she's not as good with daggers as Isabela, but she still has her archery and bardic skills. Ultimately it is a trained Orlesian bard versus a pirate, and I feel much more inclined to bet on the former.

Fight 2

Nathaniel vs Sigrun: Sorry, Nate. But Sigrun is a Legionnaire, used to surviving against impossible odds in a darkspawn infested pit. Not only that, she's the only member of her group to survive, so she's resilient even by Legionnaire standards. Nathaniel still has work to do.

Fight 3

Aveline vs Sten: Aveline may be a skilled warrior, but Sten has been groomed for combat in the intense manner of the Qun since an early age. That's his role, and he takes it very seriously. And not just any Qunari warrior makes it into the Beresaad, or gets chosen Arishok.

Fight 4

Oghren vs Loghain: Tricky one. They're both old veterans, but I think Loghain's discipline and tactical savvy would win over Oghren's drunken rage.

Fight 5

Wynne vs Merrill (DA2): I think experience is the tiebreaker here. Wynne is a fully trained senior enchanter who carries a powerful spirit around. Merril is young, naive First who hasn't even finished her training as a Keeper. Blood magic might help even the odds, but if anyone would know how to counter that, it's Wynne.

Fight 6

Morrigan vs Anders (Awakening): A shapeshifter trained by Flemeth and in possession of her grimoire against a scared Circle mage who doesn't even manage to evade the templars? I think the answer is obvious, and I like Anders.

Fight 7

Cailan vs Shale: We have already established Shale would crush an ogre. We know for a fact an ogre would crush Cailan. How would a stronger, less squishy version of an ogre be any easier for Cailan to take down?

Fight 8

Zathrian vs Jarvia: Again, a centuries old dalish Keeper with his share of special skills against a gangster who thinks way too much of her own capabilities. Zathrian wins.

Most of the votes are what I would put so I will only vote for 2 fights.

Step would win over Aveline considering the hardships he had to go through. It also helps he's part of the toughest race in Thedas, physically speaking. Aveline, while powerful, has never strike me as a someone who could best Sten.

Oghren would win over Loghain. The crazy dwarf took on 2 ogres at the same time and survived. I doubt Loghain could do the same and survived. Furthermore, if Oghren is fuelled by his berserker rage against Loghain, I really doubt tactics would be enough to stop Oghren.

Right I'll do this quickly.

Round 2

  1. Leliana - down to Leliana having more training and probably having better equipment since working for the divine.
  2. Sigrun - Only if they were reasonably close. If they were far apart at the start  then Nathaniel.
  3. Sten - Avelines great and all, but sten is just like an unstoppable hammer. He will crush anything in his way.
  4. Oghren - Only because Loghain is getting on a bit. Back in his prime Loghain would probably win.
  5. Merrill - Again, wynne is getting on a bit. Also Wynne is a more support/healer based companion while merrill can inflict some serious damage by herself.
  6. Morrigan - She's Morrigan. Frankly she could probably seduce Awakening anders to go to bed with her and then kill him while he's unawares
  7. Shale. - He's an arrogant, squishy meat bag, She's a ****ing golum. Need I say more?
  8. Zathrian. - Well Zathrian just seems like a really big power player while a Jarvia is just a gangster. A powerful, great gangster but such things just seem below Zathrian.

ROUND 3 - Voting is open now!

The fighting for this round has moved to the Gallows Courtyard as it was before the events of Dragon Age 2, but with the statues removed, and the stairs and entrances to the courtyard closed off. Combatants will fight to the death to ensure a spot in Round 4. They will start 20 meters apart, and the fight will last until one of both is dead. When you cast your vote, try to go off the lore and what is posted below, not the games' combat mechanics.

When you cast your vote, write down why you think the person you voted for would win. Only vote on the fights listed below, and not the fights for Rounds 1 and 2. If you fail to give any reasoning or your reasoning sounds like personal preference or mere joking, your votes won't be taken into account when choosing the winners.

Fight A

Leliana - Leliana is both a Seeker and a Bard, trained as she was under Marjolaine, of whom she now carries the bow. During her time with the Hero of Ferelden, she was hardened. Previously in the tournament, Leliana defeated both Varric and Isabela.

vs

Sigrun - After the events in Amaranthine, Sigrun remained a Grey Warden, still reaping the benefits of her training as a member of the Legion of the Dead. Previously in the tournament, Sigrun defeated both Tallis and Nathaniel Howe.

Fight B

Sten - After the Blight and the death of the previous one in Kirkwall, Sten became the new Arishok. He still carries Asalaa, the sword the Warden gave him. Previously in the tournament, Sten defeated both Fenris and Aveline.

vs

Loghain - After the Blight, Loghain remained a Warden, and is still positively affected by his training as a Fereldan general. Previously in the tournament, Loghain defeated both Justice and Oghren.

Fight C

Merrill (DA2) - Besides having been trained as a Keeper's First, Merrill is also a Blood Mage, and she has been reaping the benefits of the knowledge she got after fixing the broken Eluvian in her home. Previously in the tournament, Merrill defeated both Velanna and Wynne.

vs

Morrigan (DA:O) - Morrigan never went through with the Dark Ritual she offered to the Warden. She holds in her possession her mother's grimoires, which the Warden gave her. She is still a Shapeshifter, as she was during the Blight. Previously in the tournament, Morrigan defeated both Grey Warden Bethany and Awakening's Anders.

Fight D

Shale - Having travelled with the Hero of Ferelden, Shale knows her true identity, and she has also been equipped with Brilliant Crystals. Previously in the tournament, Shale defeated both an Ogre and Cailan, the King of Ferelden.

vs

Zathrian - A Keeper as well as a Blood Mage, Zathrian has been around for over 300 years, thus having a lot of experience when it comes to battle. Previously in the tournament, Zathrian defeated both Keeper Marethari and Jarvia.

Leliana, because I still feel her bard training would be able to out do a lot of competition. She's an accomplished archer, and awesome in melee... I think she'd be able to take down Sigrun before it even got serious.

Sten, while I think they're equally matched in both experience and training. This one was tough, but I think Sten would have the size advantage.

Morrigan, another evenly matched one. But with access to both Flemeth's grimoires, I think Morrigan knows magic that Merrill is incapable of. Plus, seeing a mage morph into a bear or giant spider is a bit unsettling.

Shale, I honestly think anyone going up against Shale is going to lose. She's impervious to anything! I read Asunder, too. She survived things that would have killed anyone else, and she came through just fine. I doubt Zathrian is going to give her much of a fight :P Plus he's a mage, and the only thing she hates more then pigeons are mages. SQUISH.

Sigrun 6/4 - She has more severity than Leliana and this is a straight up scrap; a dance of wits and guile this is not. The only way I see Leliana taking this is by finding a ch!nk in Sigrun's armor, feigning death, and finally following up with a coup de grace. All Sigrun has to do is charge and survive.

Loghain 6/4 - This one was a close one, but Loghain's strategic use of memory is what gets him by. In this scenario, I would normally give it to Sten, assuming he would overpower Loghain's sword and shield much as he did Aveline. But there's one thing Loghain has that Aveline didn't;knowledge of Sten's style of combat. Loghain fought beside The Warden and Sten once he was made a Grey Warden, a necessity to face the Archdemon. As part of The Warden's crew, he made special note of the combative prowess and minute details in the battle tactics of each of The Warden's fellow compatriots, just in case a scenario much like this one occurred. Sten didn't see it coming, Loghain gets him with foresight and telegraphing. Always five moves ahead.

Morrigan 8/2 - Merril is an elven Morrigan that wasn't raised by Asha'bellanar. Morrigan has the survival instinct and self determination that Merril lacks to win this. Merril would only take it by finally becoming a Pride Abomination and even then it's not guaranteed.

Zathrian 7/3 - Zathrian takes this through use of Elemental and Keeper magic. Keeper magic would slow Shale down or physically incapacitate her. Zathrian could then use either ice magic to freeze her solid or fire magic to soften her up. As we know golems could be killed and are threatened by lava. Shale has immense strength and if even one blow lands it's lights out and Zathrian will meet his Creators. But on the flipside Shale's size and limited travel speed is a huge disadvantage. Zathrian could fall back on his Keeper magic long enough to set up his Elemental spells.

Edit: LPPrince's argument convinced me enough to change my vote from Sten to Loghain.

What an excellent idea! Well, here I go!

Fight A
  • Leliana - My reasoning behind this is that Leliana has training as a bard. As a bard, she has contacts in many place (a spy network, if you will). She has the power of the Chantry behind her. With knowledge and her own strength, she'd likely win a fight between her and Sigrun.

Fight B
  • Sten - He would most definitely win the fight against Loghain for sure. Sten is younger. He has more strength. He is a warrior that lives and dies by the sword. [Also, the Warden didn't give Sten Asala. Asala was always Sten's sword. Sten couldn't return to Par Vollen without his sword, so the Warden helped Sten find Asala.]

Fight C
  • Morrigan (DA:O) - Morrigan has Flemeth's training on her side. If Morrigan were a circle mage, Merrill might have won. However, with the magics that Flemeth taught Morrigan, Merrill doesn't stand a chance.

Fight D
  • Zathrian - Shale may be a golem with incredible strength, but Zathrian has knowledge and magic on his side. I believe that with his knowledge, he'd know Shale's weaknesses and would be able to disable her and/or use his environment to parry any attacks she may have.

Leliana - she has been trained for far longer than Sigrun.
Sten - younger, stronger, and bigger
Morrigan - She has all of Flemeth's secrets from the grimoire
Shale - she would smash his head in so quickly (if she could get to him first)

Fight A: Leliana. She is more experienced and more versatile.

Fight B: Sten. I agree with what everyone else has said. Younger, Stronger, Bigger.

Fight C: Morrigan. She is better trained and seems to have a better understanding of magic.

Fight D: Shale. I have a hard time seeing anyone beat an angry moving stone warrior.

Too many popular votes. I don't see a bard/thief/agent winning against someone who fought darkspawn 24/7 before becoming a Warden... and was in the Carta before that.

Fight A: They both have stealth.  They both have experience.  Sigrun has a lot of super stabby things and lots of damage evasion.

Fight B: Loghain asks the larger, tougher and younger Sten for a breather.  Sten says no.  Sten wins.

Fight C: Both start blasting before the round begins.  Morrigan then turns into a bear and eats Merrill.

Fight D: The following conversation occurs:

The Bald Elf is quite old and wise so I will ask it a question.  Does it know what the meaning of my green crystals mean?
That you're now quite invulnerable to nature magic which is pretty much the entirety of my magic?

Ooh...the Bald Squishy Elf at least knows what is coming!

Fight A

Leliana - Leliana would definitely win this. Sigrun is a close up fighter and Leliana would just take Sigrun out from a distance. Especially if she's hardened.

vs

Sigrun

Fight B

Sten - I think Sten would win this one due to skill and vitality. He is more driven than Loghain. I don't know how Sten beat Fenris though.

vs

Loghain

Fight C

Merrill (DA2)

vs

Morrigan (DA:O)-I think that skill wise Merrill is stronger in terms of magic but Morrigan is much more cunning and deceptive and would be totally willing to use Merrill's naiveté against her.

Fight D

Shale -As strong as Zathrian is with his age and experience being alive for 300 years affords him he is up against a golem here. A golem who used to be a Dwarf. Dwarves are more resistant to magic as a rule, and Golem's even more so. Zathrians magic would not do him too many favors in this match up. I think that with his magic all but nullified Zathrian would go down to Shale.

vs

Zathrian
