The year is 9:41 Dragon. The sky has been torn asunder, the Veil has been Breached, and the demon hordes are spreading across the lands. But that is not all this terrible event has brought us; because right here, at the gates of our beloved Denerim, portals have opened. To dimensions we never even deemed possible. Out stepped heroes whom we know from the past decade as the heroes who shaped the world into what it is today, and they seek to fight. To the death.
Cometh all, to the Markets of Denerim, to witness the greatest tournament ever held, a fortnight from now on the eve of the 17th of Justinian, and take your place in the stands. And when the time comes to decide the best warrior in all of Thedas (rogues, mages and beasts included in that title)... you will need to cast your vote.
So I suddenly got the idea of making up a Dragon Age-tournament, pitching companions and NPC's from all the games that have been released (so not Inquisition) against each other. And you guys will decide who wins. So, how does it work? Well, below I have posted 16 fights. The winner of one fight will go up against the winner of the following fight in the next round. So if Leliana wins fight A, and Zevran wins fight B, they will be each other's foes in the next round, and so and so on.
You guys will decide who wins. I'm going to ask you to read through the fights, pick the one you think would win (and try to keep it as real as possible, so Varric won't win because of his Blinding Chest-Hair or something like that), plus reasoning, and post your list down below. After a few days I will gather the votes, count them, and pick a winner for each fight, so we will know who gets to be in the next rounds. If there's a stalemate? We'll see when, and if, that happens.
The fighting for this round has moved to the Provings Arena, where all combatants will fight to the death to ensure a spot in Round 3. They will start 15 meters apart, and the fight will last until one of both is dead. When you cast your vote, try to go off the lore and not the games' combat mechanics. I recommend looking at the Dragon Age Wiki.
When you cast your vote, write down why you think the person you voted for would win. Only vote on the fights listed below, and not the fights for Round 1. If you fail to give any reasoning or your reasoning sounds like personal preference or mere joking, your votes won't be taken into account when choosing the winners.
Fight 1
Leliana - She is both a Seeker and a Bard, hardened, and has Marjolaine's Bow
vs
Isabela - She has a ship and crew again
They stand only 15 meters apart, which is not even 50 feet. Pretty close for an archer, assuming Leliana doesn't have her daggers. But one good arrow within that distance grounds Izzy and its over. Can Izzy close the gap before Leliana fires her shot, knowing Leliana is an experienced and very accurate archer? I think not(and I practice short blade combat and archery).
Fight 2
Nathaniel - He is a Warden, owns a part of Amaranthine and has the Howe Bow
vs
Sigrun - She's still a Warden and has had Legion of the Dead training
Why is this different than the Leliana/Izzy fight? Simple:Sigrun has heavy armor. Nathaniel would have to be insanely good to get his arrows through the joints of Sigrun's armor as thats likely his only chance, and from that distance, I'm going to assume Sigrun can close the gap and end him. Nathaniel will be more mobile, but he'll run out of arrows at some point. Sigrun's weapon isn't expendable.
Fight 3
Aveline - She's Kirkwall's Guard-Captain and has her own Shield/Gift
vs
Sten - He's the new Arishok and has Asala
Sten has been through much in his life, and has undergone tons of combat. Aveline has as well. Aveline goes sword and board, Sten goes two handed. So far so good. Question is, can Sten get past Aveline's shield? She has offense and defense, Sten is pure offense. Aveline has experience fighting qunari which would typically give her the edge against a qunari opponent, but Sten has battled against forces far greater than Aveline's ever encountered(namely, the Archdemon). Gonna say its an extremely close one that could go either way, but I'll give it to Sten.
Fight 4
Oghren - Is a Warden and trainer of new recruits
vs
Loghain - Is a Warden and still has his training as a Fereldan general
No question, Loghain. His experience in battle far surpasses Oghren's and Oghren is the type to get carried away, which I can absolutely see happening in this encounter. Loghain on the other hand will keep his head(haha, see what I did there) under control and outmaneuver him.
Fight 5
Wynne - She has the Spirit of Faith inside her and has Annerin's Token
vs
Merrill (DA2) - Is a Keeper's First/Blood Mage with knowledge from the Eluvian she fixed
Wynne has the experience to topple Merrill, but the elf has something Wynne does not-blood magic. And I believe that will take Wynne off guard and lead Merrill to victory. Bit of a shock tactic.
Fight 6
Morrigan - Is a Shapeshifter and has both of Flemeth's Grimoires, not carrying the OGB
vs
Anders (Awakening) - A Warden with Circle training
Morrigan is someone very special, someone who's hard to judge and has a ton going for her in battle. Anders in his Awakening state is simply not equipped to beat her in any sense. Morrigan takes this one handily.
Fight 7
Cailan - King of Ferelden, has had training from Loghain in personal combat
vs
Shale - Has had her memory restored and she is equipped with Brilliant Crystals
Cailan seems to not know how to handle extremely large opponents relative to himself. Shale will not care about the honor of a battle with the King, and will simply crush Cailan before he has a chance to do anything. Easy victory for the golem.
Fight 8
Zathrian - A Keeper/Blood Mage, 3000 years of experience
vs
Jarvia - She is a Carta Assassin/Boss
This one I see as tough, but I'm gonna give it to Zathrian under the assumption that those thousands of years of experience will come in handy, providing him a clever way to trick Jarvia and have her in a position that leads to her demise. He certainly wouldn't be against a little trickery if it leads to his survival.
