The year is 9:41 Dragon. The sky has been torn asunder, the Veil has been Breached, and the demon hordes are spreading across the lands. But that is not all this terrible event has brought us; because right here, at the gates of our beloved Denerim, portals have opened. To dimensions we never even deemed possible. Out stepped heroes whom we know from the past decade as the heroes who shaped the world into what it is today, and they seek to fight. To the death.
Cometh all, to the Markets of Denerim, to witness the greatest tournament ever held, a fortnight from now on the eve of the 17th of Justinian, and take your place in the stands. And when the time comes to decide the best warrior in all of Thedas (rogues, mages and beasts included in that title)... you will need to cast your vote.
So I suddenly got the idea of making up a Dragon Age-tournament, pitching companions and NPC's from all the games that have been released (so not Inquisition) against each other. And you guys will decide who wins. So, how does it work? Well, below I have posted 16 fights. The winner of one fight will go up against the winner of the following fight in the next round. So if Leliana wins fight A, and Zevran wins fight B, they will be each other's foes in the next round, and so and so on.
You guys will decide who wins. I'm going to ask you to read through the fights, pick the one you think would win (and try to keep it as real as possible, so Varric won't win because of his Blinding Chest-Hair or something like that), plus reasoning, and post your list down below. After a few days I will gather the votes, count them, and pick a winner for each fight, so we will know who gets to be in the next rounds. If there's a stalemate? We'll see when, and if, that happens.
This might be a terrible idea, this might be brilliant, but it's late and I felt like posting it. If people think this is stupid, a waste of time or simply an invite for flamewars, this thread can be closed anytime. Let's just have some fun together. We haven't had that in a long time, now have we?
Got it? Let's get started.

ROUND 3 - Winners
Spoiler
The fighting for this round has moved to the Gallows Courtyard as it was before the events of Dragon Age 2, but with the statues removed, and the stairs and entrances to the courtyard closed off. Combatants will fight to the death to ensure a spot in Round 4. They will start 20 meters apart, and the fight will last until one of both is dead. When you cast your vote, try to go off the lore and what is posted below, not the games' combat mechanics.
Fight A

Fight B
Sten - After the Blight and the death of the previous one in Kirkwall, Sten became the new Arishok. He still carries Asalaa, the sword the Warden gave him. Previously in the tournament, Sten defeated both Fenris and Aveline.

vs
Morrigan (DA:O) - Morrigan never went through with the Dark Ritual she offered to the Warden. She holds in her possession her mother's grimoires, which the Warden gave her. She is still a Shapeshifter, as she was during the Blight. Previously in the tournament, Morrigan defeated both Grey Warden Bethany and Awakening's Anders.
Fight D
Shale - Having travelled with the Hero of Ferelden, Shale knows her true identity, and she has also been equipped with Brilliant Crystals. Previously in the tournament, Shale defeated both an Ogre and Cailan, the King of Ferelden.
vs
Zathrian - A Keeper as well as a Blood Mage, Zathrian has been around for over 300 years, thus having a lot of experience when it comes to battle. Previously in the tournament, Zathrian defeated both Keeper Marethari and Jarvia.

ROUND 4 - Winners

Combatants will fight to ensure a spot in Round 4. Each combatant will start at the far end opposite of the other, and the fight will last until one of both is dead. When you cast your vote, try to go off the lore and what is posted below, not the games' combat mechanics.

ROUND 5
Spoiler
(IMPORTANT - Read everything before voting!)
My my, ladies and gentlemen, it's been an exciting tournament, with lots of great fights, lots of surprises, but most of all an amazing crowd! Now, join us on the roof of Fort Drakon, where the ballistas have been removed and replaced by stands. The combatants will start the match at a distance of 10 meters away from each other, which is about 33 feet. Both combatants will get an appropriate amount of time to rest from all of their previous fights, which is a few days. This also allows them to mentally prepare for the coming duel. They will fight until the other is no more! The combatants are:
Sten vs Shale
Sten
Famous for being a companion to the Hero of Ferelden, who single-handedly defeated an Archdemon right here on top of Fort Drakon, Sten is a Qunari warrior who trained all his life to kill. After the Qunari Invasion in Kirkwall and the subsequent demise of the then-Arishok, Sten took up the mantle and became the new military leader of those that follow the Qun. Previously in this tournament, Sten shone against Tevinter slave Fenris, who was no match for Sten's strength and skill with a sword. Then he went up against Avelina, Kirkwall's very own Guard-Captain, whom he defeated despite her using the strongest of shields. And after that, Sten came up against Loghain, one of Ferelden's proud heroes who drove the Orlesians out of his country. A renowned tactical leader and great fighter, he proved no match for the best of Qunari warriors. Who in the end, had only Leliana standing in his way to the final. A bard, famous for her cunning and skill with a bow, though her arrows proved to be insufficient to bring down this man, who brought her down after a long and winding battle.
And now, Sten has come to show the world the power of the Arishok, and shame his predecessor who fell at the hands of a Ferelden refugee. As preparation for this fight, Sten has been given a sufficient amount of cookies to eat, and his equipment will be the following (Alistair, Varric, dreadnoughts, guards and the like not included):
Spoiler
Shale
Also famous for accompanying the Hero of Ferelden in the quest to end the Blight, Shale probably is Thedas' most well-known golem. Originally a member of House Cadash, which Shale does remember, she was one of the first to volunteer to become a golem at the hands of the legendary Caridin, who later became a golem himself. Shale has changed 'homes' several times, ending up in the farmers' village of Honnleath before the Warden found her. What makes Shale unique from other golems is that she's not influenced by a control rod, which made her a valuable ally to the Warden's party. Also, she seems to go about her doings in a relatively civilized manner for a golem, though she's pretty much rude to anyone. At the start of this tournament, Shale stood against a mighty Ogre, one of the Darkspawn that flooded Ferelden in 9:30 Dragon. But alas, it was no match for Shale, as she quickly squished it into the ground. After that, Shale fought against Cailan, the now-late King of Ferelden, and gave him a death even more gruesome than the one he already faced before at Ostagar. Then the mage Keeper Zathrian crossed her path, but after a long and tiresome fight he also found death in Shale's rocky fists.
And then only Morrigan, another trusted ally to the Warden-Commander and famed daughter of Flemeth, stood in Shale's way to the final. One of the toughest battles mankind ever had the pleasure - or misfortune, depends on how you look at it. I hear they're still looking for bodies under the rubble at the Gallows - of witnessing, Morrigan's magic eventually proved no mathc for this golem, which surprised the crowd as she smashed the beloved mage in half. I hear King Alistair is throwing a celebratory feast.
And now Shale has left the comfort of victory behind to stand against her former ally Sten, the one she bonded with the most as the two compared the Warden-Commander and his friends to 'monkeys'. Before this fight, Shale has been given enough time to mentally prepare for this fight, and also a great amount of pigeons to smash, as she so eloquently requested - "Get me some of those birds before I smash your head in as well, human." Her equipment will be the following:
Spoiler
Shale has been equipped with Brilliant Nature Crystals, which give an added nature and physical bonus to her attacks and defenses. Though keep in mind to not take the way these crystals get her through situations in Dragon Age: Origins into account, as this is a tournament based off of the lore and not the games. Just keep in mind she can withstand attacks a bit more and deal out a bit more damage than a normal Golem.
Oh, and keep in mind Shale is not immortal.
Location for those that don't know what the roof of Fort Drakon is
In a heated battle against the almighty Arishok everyone knows as 'Sten', one of the Heroes of the Blight, this formidable golem came out as the victor, when her iron fists smashed the Qun's military leader to death. After the fight, when the dust settled on the top of Fort Drakon, it appears that more than just the hornless warrior had suffered under the destructive power. The stands, the balconies, even the entrance to the tower had taken a few hits, and the amount of casualties is still unknown. Historians are already calling it the "greatest duel of this Age", some would even go as far as to say it's the best Thedas has ever seen. Orzammar and the dwarven thaigs have issued a statement saying they're "proud of what this golem had received", and they're looking for ways to reward Caridin's creation. The King of Orzammar has already ordered a statue to be built in Shale's honour.
Meanwhile, the Qun has not yet issued a statement, though we have received reports of uproar coming from Seheron. There's already whispers going around that the Qunari might even try to invade Tevinter again. The White Divine in Orlais, who issued a statement on the tournament yesterday, says this would be "extremely foolish", and she'd be ready to call on a new Exalted March, should the Qunari intend to invade the mainland. "A situation like this would threaten the entirety of Thedas, and when that would happen both Chantries would have to put their differences aside. I don't want the Qunari to repeat their actions at Kirkwall on a larger scale."
For now, though, the rest of Thedas grieves for its fallen heroes, while many applaud the tournament's success. Ferelden's ruler called it "a great way for the common people to put their attention into something else than the disasters happening around us". We now ask of you:
What did you think of the tournament? What did I do right, what do you think I could have done better? Do you agree with the votes, or the different match-ups? The thread is now open for discussion below.
I'd also like to thank everyone who commented and voted on this thread, and am really grateful for the fact that this thread didn't descend into flamewars and page after page of pointless debate, as I expected when I started it, to be frank.

A: As they square off Leliana becomes hypnotized by Varric's chest hair. The dwarf drops her in a single shot.
B: A close match, decided only when Zevran starts hitting on the Match Announcer, allowing the pirate to finish him.
C: Howe decides to fight the match naked, Sebastian is unable to even look at his opponent giving the Howe the easy win.
D: Tallis attempts to coquettishly flirt with the Legion of the Dead Perky Goth. Sigrun stabs her.
E: Aveline starts acting all butch and manly, intimidating Alistair and giving her the match.
F: Fenris tries to put his hand through Sten's chest. Sten puts his hand through Fenris' chest. Sten wins.
G: Carver is quickly stunned by Oghren's impressive display of drunk wisdom, double entendres and crude remarks. Dwarf all the way.
H: Justice attempts to chide Loghain about his responsibility to justice. Loghain stabs him.
I: Anders starts whining about how unfair life is, Wynne blows him up.
J: Merrill cheap shots Velanna before the match starts, then acts confused why everybody is so mad at her.
K: Morrigan cheaps shots Bethany before the match starts, then acts condescendingly when everybody is mad at her.
L: Bethany expects Anders to start whining and is shocked when he acts casual and friendly, allowing him to blast her.
M: Cullen taunts Cailen with the fact the Templar is in all three games while the King bites it 15 minutes in the first, Cailen runs from the field in tears.
N: The Ogre bellows then Shale hits it. Shale spends the rest of the Ogre's short life taunting how it only got to be a boss level monster in the first actual quest.
O: Zathrian points out he can't die thanks to the curse. Marethari can do nothing but curse him back.
P: Howe demands more, Jarvia obliges him by stabbing him repeatedly with even more knives.
If there's a stalemate usually the next person to vote will be a tie breaker. The way they do it on comic vine is that the first to get ten votes moves forward. So in the case of Varric vs Leliana the first to hit ten votes wins.

Thanks for that, I'll keep that in mind as an option
Could you edit in why you think your picks win? I'm guessing that it's not supposed to be a popularity contest. For example I like Leliana more than Varric, but in combat I think he would beat her.
A: Leliana, because Varric's stuck with a crossbow and she's able to go in close-range.
B: Zevran, because he's an assassin, and assassins > duelists.
C: N/A (I haven't played Exiled Prince or Awakening)
D: N/A (again, no Awakening, though I am inclined to believe anyone would beat Tallis)
E: Alistair, because... idk, both Alistair and Aveline sucked for me. Okay, changing my mind, Aveline.
F: Sten Fenris, because my Fen was actually a lot better than my Sten, come to think of it.
G: Oghren I'm not actually sure if I'm qualified to judge, because I've never played a mage Hawke.
H: N/A (see above)
I: Wynne, because Spirit Healers are superior.
J: N/A (see above)
K: Morrigan, because Shapeshifter.
L: N/A (see above)
M: Cailan, because Cullen's just a wimpy little baby templar, and Cailan has considerable experience in combat.
N: Shale, because I've beaten Ogres with Shale before.
O: Zathrian, because his battle was reasonably challenging, while I'm not actually certain how powerful Marethari is.
P: Jarvia, because Howe is really weak.
...Okay, I know it looks like I'm biased in favor of Origins, but I swear that's not the case.
Fight A: Varric. He's got Bianca, a state of the art crossbow, and did you see the shot he makes to pin that guy when you first meet him?
Fight B: Isabela. Zevran got his plan to assassinate the Warden foiled hard. (I'm not counting how he glitched out to survive getting his throat sliced after DAO)
Fight C: Nathaniel Howe. Nathaniel is more take charge about his life (sneaking into the keep, asking to be a Warden). Sebastian just posts on the chanter's board and then, despite his talk of peace and the maker, just swears revenge on all Kirkwall at the drop of a hat and storms off in a tantrum. Not much self control. Feel like Howe could just sneak up and off him fairly easy.
Fight D: N/A. I want to choose Sigrun, but I haven't yet played Mark of the Assassin.
Fight E: Aveline. I like Alistair, but Aveline's a woman-shaped battering ram.
Fight F: Fenris. He does that glowing hand thing to rip out people's organs and he's taken on his share of qunari before.
Fight G: N/A. haven't played with Carver enough.
Fight H: Loghain. As much as I liked Justice in Awakening, he's in a rotting corpse.
Fight I: Wynne. Had her built with Arcane Warrior spec; try and get through the Juggernaut armor set, Anders!
Fight J: N/A. I usually kill Velanna.
Fight K: Grey Warden Bethany. Just doing her duty killing darkspawn being awesome. A good old classic fireball vs. a mouse/spider/bear form. Whatever, animals still burn.
Fight L: Anders (Awakening). He's escaped the circle seven times. Circle Bethany couldn't even pull it off once.
Fight M: Cullen (DA:O). Cullen survived the Circle tower. It was crazy demon infested. He's a tough cookie.
Fight N: Shale. She's taken on Ogres before.
Fight O: Keeper Zathrian. More experience.
Fight P: Jarvia. She's good enough in single combat, it seems.
Fight A
Leliana Fight B
Zevran Fight C
Nathaniel Howe Fight D
Tallis Fight E
Aveline Fight F
Fenris Fight G
Oghren Fight H
Loghain Fight I
Wynne Fight J
Velanna Fight K
Morrigan Fight L
Anders Fight M
Cailan
Fight N
Shale Fight O
Keeper Zathrian Fight P
Jarvia
A. leliana, i dont think leliana would stay at long range for varic to use bianca
B. both get disqualified cause halfway through the battle they drop their weapons and just get nasty on the arena floor
C. nathaniel, sebastian is too far straightforward to deal with someone willing to do anything to win
D. sigrun, tallis isnt bad, but she matches up badly with sigrun who is in a group called the legion of the dead
E. aveline, allistair's jokes cant shield him in this battle
F. sten, even if fenris rips out stens heart with his glowing fist, he still has to get within reach and sten will use those last few seconds to end fenris
G. USA for the win... cough cough.... i mean oghren, carver doesnt have the experience in battle that oghren does... plus he would pass out when he gets close to him thanks to the alcohol breath
H. loghain, justice may be a spirit, but he is in a rotting body and that can backfire if hes not careful
I. anders, as much as i hate to admit it, but his vengeance form is too powerful and unstable for wynne and her spirit to handle
J. merrill, tough battle, velana is crazy, but merrill has the blood magic... thats the only reason (i know you can spec velana to be a blood mage, but from default settings she wont)
K. morrigan, no contest, as much as i like bethany, she cant hold up to morrigan and her knowledge of the arcane
L. anders, this time, jokes win the day, bethany cant even stand up cause shes laughing so hard
M. cullen, as much as i hate him, cullen wins out in this one cause he is not as big an idiot as cailan acts
N. shale, unless its an armored ogre, but shale takes the cake on this one
O. (really scrapin the barrel for matchups) both disqualified for the same reason isabella and zevran get disqualified
P. jarvia, howe is too much of a coward to show up for the battle, so she wins by default (but she is killed 3 weeks later when the cartel is out partying and howe raids her stronghold)
Fight A
Leliana. A technically more profound rogue. Can neutralize Varric before he has time to aim and shoot Bianca.
Fight B
Isabela. Zevran is more about those super powerful one hitters (poisons included) yet Isabela is more about finesse and direct combat, she's cunning and swift enough to dodge Zevran's heavy hitter and take him out.
Fight C
Nathaniel Howe. Sebastian has never had professional training or been part of any military organization, unlike Nathaniel.
Fight D
Sigrun. She would tank anything Tallis throws at her through her unique legion scouting techniques, and take her down.
Fight E
Alistair. I'm basing this solely off of the Weapon and Shield talent trees from DA:O and DA:2. They're more offensive and varied in comparison to DA:2's, which forcuses more on CCC's and Passives. Thus, Alistair is a more seasoned/varied fighter, so Alistair it is. This is an extremely hard one though. Both Knights, both Military, both prominent figures of government.
Fight F
Fenris. Fenris has an unbeatable advantage while Sten only has the specialization training of one talent, unlike his peers that had at least 2.
Fight G
Oghren. He has more years and battle wisdom over young, brash Carver.
Fight H
Justice. He possesses magical combat abilities while Loghain, while a seasoned veteran and a General, has no special abilities.
Fight I
Wynne. Anders (Justice) is brash and reckless, Wynne battles with wisdom and proper attrition.
Fight J
Merrill. She has blood magic.
Fight K
Morrigan. Years, experience, uniquer arsenal of spells.
Fight L
Circle Bethany. By the time she was in the Circle, she was already an experienced mage fighter. Anders was new meat.
Fight M
Cailan. Only because we've never really seen Cullen in legitimate combat (just a useless-cameo style figure), yet we've seen Cailan slay plenty of Darkspawn.
Fight N
Shale...duh
Fight O
Zathrian. Not really fair because we've never seen Marethari in combat, unless you count seeing her get possessed..lol. Zathrian however has many ancient magics, such as Keeper and Blood magic.
Fight P
Arl Rendon Howe. I'm surprised so many people pick Jarvia! Really? Howe had a lifetime of military and government training...not to mention being command in chief of 3 different armies/military task forces...Jarvia is just a tough street rat. A total scoundrel and improvised thug. Hell no, Howe takes this one easily.
