Whatever is the deal with Flemeth/Morrigan we will get an answer in DAI, so chill.

It's a medieval setting, parents hit their children. They used to do it a couple of decades ago, they still do it now. Morrigan even comments that she raised her well and that she is thankful for such an upbringing and the lessons it taught. 

 

 

It goes way beyond just hitting Morrigan, she emotionally abused her too to 'make her stronger' Thats why its abuse, Morrigan even says herself love never comes into the equation with her mother, and its made pretty clear they dont have a healthy mother-daughter bond. Psychological abuse is the Reason Morrigan is the way she is.
