I admit, part of me thinks BioWare deserves the goodies for continuing to do a great job with representation--but part of me thinks that maybe the first time was all about encouragement/a sort of culinary thank-you-high-five-good-job-keep-it-up... and I wonder if we should be rewarding them again quite so soon.
Not that it's a terrible idea, or anything. It's just something I've thought about. They're leagues ahead of the other major developers (there are indies out there who probably do better, even), but there is always room for improvement. They've been doing a good job with their marketing thus far, but I wonder how we will feel after playing the game?
On the one hand, the team will be disbanded post-release. On the other hand, we may be rewarding them pre-emptively (assuming we ship out another reward in October) and end up disappointed with the actual in-game representation. Now, to be fair it is BioWare and that's kind of unlikely considering how good a job they've done thus far. Still, it's another thing to think about--should we continue to reward them for JUST marketing, or should we actually wait to see what the game is like first?
Also, I want it to be clear that we're doing this to be nice, and to show support for representation in general--and not because we want more media attention or fame or what-have-you. While the Examiner article was nice and it didn't really garner much attention, there might be some people who hope they'll end up on Twitter or in some online news article. I was kind of surprised no news sites picked it up on their own, sure--but then after the fact, considering how much vitriol poured out of the dark recesses of the Internet (blaming us of attention-seeking, etc) I kind of regretted that it DID get media attention... if that makes sense.
Not trying to be a downer here. I'm tired and maybe I'm not expressing myself all that well. But I guess my point is I don't want this to turn into that attention-seeking behavior we were accused of, and I also don't want this to become a "let's send goodies to BioWare every so often just because we feel like it" thing. Not that there's anything wrong with doing so, but I feel like the original purpose (albeit expanded upon) needs to apply. So we shouldn't be sending goodies out every X amount of months unless BioWare really does something that deserves it. If we can do that, if we have benchmarks for what earns cupcakes/goodies and nice notes, then I think the gesture will mean more.
... If any of that made sense.
