Well, I am thrilled. This went off incredibly well and, other than some of the photos on Twitter showing names (I cringed, but it was out of my hands at that point), I'd call this an amazing success.
Cameron himself, one of the producers, told me he can hear people all over the studio talking about what we did. And while the cupcakes are delicious, the heartfelt letters have meant so much more to all of them.
We really drove home the positive message of thanks for giving women more visibility in gaming. I think we have done a very good thing here, as well as lifted a lot of dev spirits that appeared down this week.
Allan and I also talked a lot on Steam while this was all going down, and he encouraged all of us to continue being the loud voices of positive vibes for BioWare - not just for supporting them in what they did with Lady Inquisitor but in anything and everything they do that we find awesome. It seems they have a bad habit of getting caught up in a lot of the negative stuff hurled at them (from the forum, Twitter, Facebook comments, etc) that it's easy for them to miss the positive vibes, the simple "thank you's" and such.
This was, obviously, a HUGE gesture and it got their attention. But we can continue to be a positive force for the team by sending positive feedback whenever we want, coordinated or not. Even simple, small gestures such as sending a "thank you" or "that's great" Tweet/PM to them would go a long way to keeping things just a little more positive and better, and help them not to get too bogged down in the negative crap that gets spewed at them.
