**** the heavyweights. I haven't paid attention to them in quite a while. Light heavyweight and below is still pretty interesting, but I guess the gemeral public don't care for them. I don't also buy into the whole UFC thing. Seems to have lost some steam imo.
They're the big box office draw though, always have been. The waning of that division is emblematic of boxing's overall shift away from being a mainstream sport.

oh I agree totally but then again I'm a 'Friday night fights' degenerate. But its the heavyweights that bring the masses out...there was nothing like Iron Mike fights, the lead up to them. I was spoiled a bit living in NYC and in the mid 80's at the peek of Boxing with the Hagler/Hearns/Leonard battle... Roberto Duran etc.. outside of Money 'I only pick my fights now Whitaker' who else is there to follow? there's a nice Russian Light-heavyweight that I really like he is mobile and has lots of power

Mayweather has destroyed that argument. Pacquiao to an extent too.
Scrubs. Cheese rolling is the only true gentleman's sport. Everything else is just grubbing around in the dirt with the hoi polloi. *sips tea*

There'll always be a new star. Having followed Mayweather's career from his pro debut, I'd never have expected him to be as popular as he is now. I do fully understand what you're saying though. It's not quite the same.
It brings me great joy that wrestling has not been mentioned by some wingnut.
The heavyweight division in boxing could use a good come back right now

He's just one boxer though and he's competing in an era with no genuinely great heavy weights. Boxing fans like yourself will follow the best fighters but the general public and therefore the money is far more biased towards the top weight division. When even mediocre/poor (in a historical context) boxers like David Haye and Vitali Klitschko can share a $30 million purse that becomes obvious.

Once Wladimir retires, I reckon it'll get more exciting again. Not because we'll have good fighters, but we'll at least have belts changing hands frequently.
Just for randomness.
I suggest you go watch some Champion's League matches from ~1998 era. I guarantee you blatant flopping, diving and other forms of cheating are virtually nonexistent.
This stuff really got rampant only recently (after 2000).
Hum... I may agree about the growing numbers of simulated fouls these last years, but cheating is an old issue in soccer. Since we talk about the Champion's League, I remember Vata scoring a goal with the hand in one of the semi-final in 1991, and Maradona did the same in a World Cup game in the 80's.
I think this is due to the nature of soccer by itself : scoring a goal is very hard, so some players are disposed to let a part of their morality into the locker room to succeed doing it.

You say that, but the highest grossing heavyweight PPV fights involved either Tyson, Lennox or Holyfield. You could compare that to the non heavyweight ones involving either Mayweather, De La Hoya and Pacquiao.
We can't act like just every heavyweight back in the day sold a ton of PPVs.
I wonder what it would be like if hockey players played soccer.
Soccer player - trips over another player, acts like he just had his leg amputated
Hockey Player - literally dies on the bench, revived, asks to go back into the game
Boxing is a real man's sport
pfft... Australian Rules Football

OT: Ice Hockey >>>>>>> errytging.
Suck it, ball lovers.
I am Russian and I was shocked to see you using such a dirty words.
Dat Cahill goal though. Not even his strong foot. Shame they missed a clear cut opportunity followed immediately by the 3rd dutch goal.

With Spains high powered offense, and the fact that Chile like to play a wide open style could make for a very interesting 2nd half
