Please allow me to formally introduce you to Etienne Durand:
Etienne doesn't know a whole lot about his past. What he does know is that his family, the Orlesian Duke and Duchess Durand, filled the pockets of the Chantry and Circle alike to secure his placement in Kinloch Hold. They saw the White Spire to be dangerous and radical in operation. After donating enough coin to have their eldest daughter (Clemence, seven years his senior) accepted, heavier offerings -- and Clemence's good reputation -- allowed heads to be turned the other way as a second child was sent there as well.
Having a Chantry sympathizer as a sibling has done Etienne numerous favors. As an apprentice, he was watched over with greater care than most young mages. Once Harrowed, and reunited with his sister, both his studies and social situations went with great ease. Etienne was a good, studious young man. He didn't get in trouble and didn't ask questions. A couple of times a day he could be found on his knees in prayer as he asked for forgiveness from his magical affliction. This earned him a reputation as a goody-two shoes, a future Loyalist, and an Enchanter's pet.
But the older he gets, the more he starts to notice the cracks in the patina. His prayers happen less often. The glances at his fellow mages, those who cry for freedom, become longer and more forlorn. Are mages locked away to protect the world from their affliction?
Or is it the other way around?

Etienne is kind of a pretty boy and can be openly teased for the fact that he preens for over 30 minutes each morning. He's sweet, kind of naive, but incredibly curious. He's pretty gullible, too.
Addition:
After returning from his break doing mage-y work, Etienne now wears a simple silver mask.
