Give us HUGE dungeons! I'm talking endless ones that make us feel lonely, and out of league. Make them supper hard!

The problem with the deep roads is that it WASN'T a well crafted dungeon, not that it was mandatory.

And I don't know, The Witcher 2 was able to cram an entire optional chapter in the game, I think Bioware can manage a handful of optional dungeons.

I don't think BioWare devs held back on purpose when making the Deep Roads, so what you get there is decent indicator of what you can expect from them in this regard. If what they made wasn't liked much in DA:O, it's not going to magically get much better.

Witcher 2 might have had "optional" chapter, but both versions made use of shared content iirc, and the game didn't have any huge dungeons whatsoever. Keep on mind the OP isn't asking for "couple optional dungeons" DA2 style, but the most badass, biggest, spirit breaking thing the game can handle.

I play for both story and the challenge. Makes the story make more sense, you know?

It would be strange to get to the final badass boss and just dispatch them with a couple of sword swings.

The Fade in Dragon Age: Origins. 'Nuff said.

No thanks to that idea.

Honestly the story doesn't make much sense anyway if you start to think about it.

4 random people killing a pride abomination, which lorewise is  able do destroy an entire city on its own. It will always be  quite ridiciulous, no matter how hard you make the gameplay. If your suspension of disbelief isn't broken at that point it shouldn't be broken by a big boss dying after a couple of sword swings either.

They aren't just random people, though. All of your party members are exceptional individuals.

It's entirely possible for dungeons to be too big.

Many times while playing Oblivion or Skyrim, I found myself thinking "God dammit! Aren't I at the end of this #*%$ing thing yet?"

Probably an overreaction to the tiny Morrowind layouts.

I don't know, in those games I went in expecting that.  Same with Dark Souls.  It depends on the game I think.

I didn't think the Skyrim dungeons were ever all that big.  Now, Daggerfall, those were some convoluted mazes from hell.

Spoiler

I think long dungeons can work so long as that doesn't mean the gameplay and environments become repetitive.  Which is perhaps easier to achieve in somewhere like the forgotten realms than Thedas.  Te problem with the deep roads is that there are so many darkspawn fights and dark caverns.

I would prefer there to be some that were longer than DA2.

There's something to be said for the challenging dungeon crawl. Might and Magic VI has some of the best. Bioware has done them in the past. Neverwinter nights (the original, never played Obsidian's) could be super challenging.

I wouldn't mind a couple of hard awesome dungeons, where the reward is the baddest armor/robes, or weapons.
Or maybe the reward is a chance meeting with Hawke or our old warden.

oh yeah baby

DA:O did it right you had small places like red cliff and huge long areas like the deep roads.

otoh in DA2 same Tevinter construction company built all the dungeons.

That is true and it is entirely possible that they could take down a Broodmother, a high Dragon and the Archdemon with the help of the soldiers on Fort Drakon.

Howerver it is still very unlikely (or rather impossible)  that 4 individuals, no matter how skilled they are, could ever take down a powerful pride abomination (Consider that the one in the circle basically took over an entire tower full of mages and templars and the Baroness kind of killed a whole village.), hundreds of Darkspawn or an ancient Tevinter magister that was powerful enough to enter the golden/black city.

As comparison I doubt any group of 4 soldiers equipped with nothing but handguns, no matter how well trained, can destroy a tank,100 enemy soldiers or an armoured helicopter with target seeking missles in real live. Even if Hollywood tries to make you believe otherwise.

If its optional, I dont see why not, i probably wouldn't do it myself, but something should be there for those that would (im one of those people that can find some of the dwemer ruins in skyrim a bit overly long).

That's why I said soldiers in real life. :P

Also don't even get me started on Shepards shamefully obvious protagonist plot armour.

In my opinion, the reason the dungeons in Skyrim get tedious is because, well, the combat kinda sucks. There's pretty much no depth to it, and in addition, the encounters are vary rarely anything more than "Enemy is standing around->spots player->runs up and hits the player"

Hopefully Inquisition would be nothing like that.

I agree. Also you basically run into the same enemies all the time. It's either falmer, the golden machine things or undead in every big dungeon. The dungeons would actually have been way more enjoyable if they actually offered more variety instead of the same three usual suspects every time.

And the combat in Skyrim (especially on the pc without interface mods) is indeed some of the worst I ever had the honor to experience.

Well, Morrowind had the two largest dungeons of the three most widely recognized Elder Scrolls titles. The ruins of Old Mournhold being the second largest, the galleries of Bamz-Amschend taking first place. Though you could technically argue Bamz-Amschend size was because it was multiple interconnected dungeons.

If you really want big dungeons, look to Daggerfall (TES: 2), some of those literally take days to walk through. Days of samey tilesets and Ancient Vampires one-shotting you if you don't have Reflect Spell on...

Is it really that long though? I never felt that it took particularily long to finish that level. Maybe people rather skip it because it is the only instance where you have to do all the fights alone without companions, which can be rather frustrating?

There were multiple reasons amongst that, but no party members was the main one.
