If you are getting random crashes to Desktop (ATI and NVIDIA) without any error popups check your Application logs in Windows. If you get the below error this fix may apply for you! Just a note that this was on Windows 7 x64.

Download and install the latest PHYSX software here:

The PhysX software included with the game is 9.09.0408. The above link will put you at the most recent version, 9.09.0814.

This is not a guaranteed fix but it did help me with these crashes. Unfortunately I am now getting a direct3d application error crash.....
