OK, seeing as I'm completely enamoured with PMMM's soundtrack and I haven't listened to anything else for the past four or so days since discovering the series... I absolutely need to have some gushing on my favourite stuff, and more importantly why it is. Here seems like the best place to do it! Spoilers follow:

Salve, Terrae Magicae

Quite possibly my favourite from the whole series. One of the few solely upbeat tracks, it was a welcome reprieve at the very end of every episode (a massive plus for watching the series over the movies too, as you get to hear it repeatedly!) Its infectiously cheerful, with a folk influence I wouldn't normally expect from an anime. it also gains points with me personally for sounding similar to one of my all time favourite OST pieces, the guild hall music from Monster Hunter Freedom 2, and I can't help getting starry eyed with nostalgia of meeting up to play that with my old school buddies every time I hear it. Absolutely wonderful.

 

Pugna ****** Maga         (Based BSN censors messing with my Canis Latinicus!)

Not quite fast pace enough to be a battle theme, and yet it still practically bleeds animosity. With sinister chanting and pumping metal, it reflects perfectly the tension and of the crappy situations the characters are all too regularly put through. Want to prove to someone that PMMM isn't your typical magical girl story without spoilers? Show 'em this.

As sophisticated and upbeat as the character whose theme it may as well, I absolutely adore this track for its placement in the story. Introducing Mami's transformation and the magical girl concept as a whole to this track, she does nothing but kick ass throughout it. Portrayed as a veteran and with such an awe-inspiring theme, you'd be forgiven for thinking she's invincible. Its the very same mind set that the inexperienced Madoka and Sayaka are under, and the soundtrack's way of lulling you into the the false sense of security possessed by the characters. Ultimately, It all comes together to make the tonal shift brought on by Mami's sudden, brutal death all the more shocking and I Iove it for it.

The slightest dash of ethereal and foreboding to begin with, which quickly falls through to an incredibly beautiful and consoling piece that only gets more so as it goes along. I'd find myself grinning from ear to ear just listening to this if it didn't so perfectly emulate the feelings and subtext of the scene to which its associated.

Not a lot to say here really, its just a beautiful track! Wonderful vocal talent throughout, with the second half being particularly great. Its infectiously uplifting, a perfect representation of Madoka's ideal of hope.   

 

No TRS tracks as they deserve a gush post entirely of their own for when the mood next strikes me. Top job though if you got through all that!

It's pretty good so far. About 30 or so episodes in.

Man, do I love this track. Mostly thanks to the narrating Homura accompanying it in the movie.
