Didn't the qunari use spears in DA2?
They looked like spears at first, but after you killed them, it turned out all they were carrying was Broken Longswords and Torn Trousers.
well I would say that in DA 2 they scaled dramatically back on everything that was not in the knife sword family.
If they consider realism why does dragon exist? Although, if you're going for realism, then spears should be in the game without a doubt, considering it was the most common weapon of them all.
There is always a touch realism even im fantasy games cause if not, you got mages doing magic in front cullen in not being called a mage which breaks immersion spears will only come back if there metal thats all.
Meera.
Edit: And let us not forget the Aiel.
Oh, and Unsullied.
I wonder why someone would find it pertinent to bring an Elder Scrolls' fan request over here.

I can't understand what you're trying to say.
Better put to use on what exactly? Nobody denies that adding spears and other weapon types would require extra animations but would it really put that big a strain on the animation budget? Personally I think the Dragon Age games could really benefit from extra weapon types and combat animations.
It's not a matter of budget in this case, it's a matter of memory. Animations take up space in the same manner that character models, textures, level designs, and weapon models due. If you throw in another set of weapon animations, then you'll likely have to limit something else to compensate. Adding in spears could mean less weapon models per weapon type (i.e. scimitar, broadsword, longsword). So would you rather have spears or more varied weapon appearances? It's hard to say, but it's a call that the developers make.
They really shouldn't though.
At least I'd be a lot more impressed if each weapon type had its own unique animations.
In a perfect world, there would be an animation for every type of weapon. After all, a sword parries, slashes, and stabs, but an axe cuts and a mace smashes. To put it simply, technology still has its limitations.
Oh, and Unsullied.
But those aren't even men anymore.

Don't you see, man?! Spears get you killed!
Or worse...
Swords will always be the big thing (Harder to have EPIC duels with spears I guess), but I'd like to see some polearms.
I was about to link you to the Oberyn Martell vs Gregor Clegane fight, but obviously I'm not the only one who thought of that xD

Valid point, at least for Unsullied. That still leaves Meera, though for ASOIAF.
And Aiel. One of the most powerful military forces ever to exist in fantasy, and spear is their favored weapon, with swords being complete taboo.
Well, the greatest non modern army of all time used a sword as their main weapon, so there is that. But all others, at least in the western world, seem to have favored spears and/or pikes.

Came in expecting some Britney jokes, leaving disappointed
if its irrelevant then why is it not in more games obviously they think about that. a sword/ax will have the advantage once they chop it to pieces all it takes is one good chop.
Um, no it doesn't, "only take one good chop." Go get a sword, you can find one fairly easily now-a-days and try and chop a baseball bat in half with, "one good chop," I'll wait...
Unless someone else is holding it so you can leverage your full strength and you gain a purchase on the heft you will not be able to snap it like that. Unless you are very strong or it have been worn down after a good amount of time fighting or exposure to the elements (which wares out metal swords too, most setting don't deal with the fact that swords chip and break when over used and not properly cared for as well) tempered wood is hard to break, that's why we still use in today in building homes, chairs, tables, desks, stairs, ladders... I can go one...
How'd that end, though?- He died because he wanted to hear the Mountain confess his crimes more than anything else, he'd won the fight till he walked up to the Mountain then he could grab Oberyn.
All Spear Gladiators ( Hoplomachus ) in Spartacus die: Barca, Auctus. - Not Accurate to the setting.
300? 299 of them die. - Not Accurate to what really happened and even in the film and they still killed way more guys then they lost.
Oberyn, basically the only spear user in ASOIAF? Dead.- Not Accurate to the setting from the book as the Unsullied, and all the Dornish warriors use spears and so do the people of all the cities of Slaver's Bay, and the Brovosii use spears as well and halberds for their elite troops.
I thought this was weird too seeing as how almost every Final Fantasy game to date has featured at least one character or class that specializes in lancing.
Though lancing is not the same as spear combat, its a form of it but kind of like saying pit bull when you mean dogs in general, but your point is true. I mean when PS1 and 2 games has more weapon animations and 50+ hour stories to boot it kind of puts a hole in the whole, "limitations of technology keeping us from having that animation and a long story." If anything we should get more animations and longer stories, now that we are on better hardware, not lose one and often (for most games) be lucky if we keep the length. DA:I has said they have over 150+ hours of content, so I wonder would it have been so bad to have 140+ hours of content and spears and the like?

Javelins, so those would be trown weapons, they didn't use them in melee if my memory serves they just keep trowing them at you even if you attacked close kind of how archers kept shooting you even when you were in their face. (I may be misremembering but I think I'm right)
The only way they will ever come back if there metal spears.

No average person could snap a tempered wooden poll like the Mountain does in his fight with Oberyn, even with a sword or Axe you have a tough time breaking them, because the people who made spears weren't stupid. Try and take a sword to a wooden baseball bat, how hard would it be to cut in half? Could you do it in one swing? Could you snap a bat with your bare hands? Sometimes they do break, but for everyone you see break at a ball game there are millions of other not breaking and that only happens to bat the players have had for years or decades because they are a superstitions and don't often change their equipment unless they have to so the bats get dented and warped over time from use.
That still leaves Meera, though for ASOIAF.
And in Dorn all the soldiers use spears as their main weapon, not just Oberyn.
If they do add spears to the game than at least one of my characters is going to be called Kaladin.

Swords in films are just lightsabers in disguise.

Well, that's 5 minutes of my life I can never get back. People actually watch this stuff? I mean, it basically was Disney magic storyline with sex and gore for shock value, complete with "DO YOU SEE THIS GUY'S HUBRIS? HE'S GOING TO LOSE, HAR HAR". Starts with a ribbon dance before a fight, which didn't exactly entertain, then the payoff was absolutely ridiculous. Giant dude might as well have shot laser beams out of his eyes; it would have made more sense than that stupid strangle-magnet-hands trope capped by quite possibly the stupidest non-reaction ever put to film. Gods, what trash.
Maybe I'm being a bit boring, but I feel you're not entitled to criticize the whole show and the people who watch it because you saw a fight without any context and thought it was terrible.

I would eventually like more weapon types in DA. Particularly stylish, more "natural" rogue melee weapons. I think the two daggers are extremely overplayed. How common was that throughout history anyway? I would really love spears, rapiers and the such in some future DA game. I guess we'll have to wait and see if it ever happens.
Well, that's 5 minutes of my life I can never get back.
And yet not only did you finished watching the video, but you wasted even more of your precious life ranting about it on the Internet. Now what are we to make of that?
I blame Oblivion for the trend in "It's okay to ignore one of the most basic weapon types in historical settings, Fictional or otherwise."
The 'real' reason is probably how different Spears and polearms are in terms of the kind of assets you need to create, almost none of the animations of even two-handed weapons translate over to the proper handling of a spear or polearm, mostly because your "Main" hand is at the back of the haft providing power with the trademark distance while the "Off" hand is used fore grip for stability. To be honest, the handling of a Rifle-grip weapon has more in common with a Polearm than a battleaxe, despite the similarities both weapons exhibit.
Agreed. I like the idea of gory stuff happening at the sharp end of the long pointy stick. But polearms are usually only good in mass combat, full-scale attacks and pretty much a one-trick-pony, being especially an awesome defense against enemy's cavalry. Doesn't work much for one-on-one combat.
That last bit isn't exactly true. Its a bit of a popular myth that polearms aren't viable in solo combat.
The Vikings would duel each other with spears. In fact, despite Hollywood depictions of Vikings all being armed with swords they primarily fought with spears both in massed battles and in duels. Samurai also occasionally fought with polearms in duels as well, as did certain classes of gladiator in ancient Rome.

Ever think spears will make a comeback?
Wouldn't they have had to be present in a previous game in the series to make a "comeback"?
