Creating variable models and content for different races(Meaning here fantasy races or species if we're talking about Mass Effect) is quite resource intensive. Making body proportions adjustable through sliders as the likes of Dragon's Dogma's character creator is a technical challenge (I imagine) and makes organizing cutscenes difficult if not impossible when it comes to the protagonist physically interacting with other characters. I was thinking about this as I considered the upcoming Mass Effect sequel, but you can consider this a general question if you like. Obviously we'd love to have both, but if you had to make a choice, which would you want the devs to devote resources to?

I don't know Saints Row did it. Anyway, if I had to choose between the two then I'd go for the racial choice I imagine. I love an overly complex CC but in terms of RPGs I'd prefer if more options in terms race would be availalbe. It makes the CC feel somehwat big still.

Saints Row, and other's like it I imagine, don't make use of heavily scripted cutscenes the way Bioware likes to.  Trying to make a cutscene work with variables like that would be a true nightmare for them, I imagine.

My comment was merely a response to "makes organizing cutscenes difficult if not impossible when it comes to the protagonist physically interacting with other characters".

I said that Saints Row did it. Of course the cutscenes are scripted, otherwise they wouldn't really be cutscenes. If you're talking about the interactive dialogue wheel sessions then I'll agree -- Saints Row doesn't have that, no.

Depends on the game.

In Dragon Age, elves are meant to be shorter and thinner than humans, just as dwarves are shorter and  thicker.

Would be weird having a giant elf with a metre-wide shoulderline.

Hm, been awhile since I picked up Saint's Row.  I was thinking that those games general avoided having the player character model interact with other character models.  That's the difficult part.  Animations can remain the same otherwise, but coordinating interaction when scale is a relevant factor?  Seems like it would be much more difficult.  I guess it would depend on the breadth of the slider options.

No, it does that pretty much all the time. The animations in the so-called "side acitivties" in SR2 aren't anything to sing praise about, but the cutscenes look and function just fine. You can make the most absurd looking character and he/she'll show up exactly like that in the cutscenes. This is why Saints Row 2 is one of the funnest games ever -- Because the customization is almostlimitless.

The cutscenes of the main missions look pretty good actually, even with female characters. I was thinking about the fighting scene with Maero and the one in the General's limo, those were close quarters and still looked good.

Huh, fair enough.

If the actual variation in height wasn't Dragon's Dogma levels of drastic, then I imagine it might not be a huge issue.

Its 2014. We are developing nanobots, plan to build an outpost on Mars, produce anti-matter and grow artificial organs. Can't we have body sliders AND multiple races in our video games?

I wonder if we can by the time we have developed a working warp drive

Many game ccs have sliders, and Skyrim had 10 races and sliders. Surely BW could figure this out?

Define races. Do you mean Asians, white, Latinos, etc.? Or do you mean elves/dwarves/Salarians/Krogans?

If fantasy races, races. If ethnic races, body sizes.

If I had to choose I would go multiple races.

Although by 2014 I would hope that we can do both.

Cut scenes should be a non issue mostly because of how they function currently. Back in the day you would have pre rendered cut scenes which wouldn't really correspond to your character. These days the cut scenes happen in engine and utilize the same objects during gameplay.

Problem with cut scenes in RPGs today is usually contextual differences of the class

Meh, I've always felt that cutscenes were comparatively lazy storytelling anyway. If there are less of them due to character customization, no great loss.

I don't remember Skyrim actually allowing you to customize body dimensions.

You could adjust your weight, but not height, iirc.

Well, I was thinking about something like Dragon's Dogma, though that might be on the extreme end.

^ Well, I would love that. :D

A happy marriage between DD's character creator and Skyrim's would make me beyond happy.

Cutscenes in Bioware games are mainly just a different camera angle for conversations.
