Considering how important the Normandy is in galactic history, it would be more likely to end up in the MEU equivalent of the Smithsonian before it turns up rotting in some shipyard.

True, But a crashed ship would be good as it would be believable (as it's already shown in ME2 & 3 it can do that 
) and would still give away to the whole finding the ship.
