In one rendition of the dialogue with hung-over Ashley Shepard can ask why she didn't get an invite. In the other I forget exactly what the dialogue prompt is, but it has Shepard talking about having a fire drill and having Joker sing over the intercom. What causes the difference? I am thinking the "invite" option happens if your renegade score is higher and the alternate is when your paragon score is higher.

I've only ever gotten the dialogue about Joker singing over the intercom. Can't test your theory in this playthrough since Ash didn't survive the coup attempt.

I never had that invitation dialogue. I believe you talk to Ashley first and not James to get the dialogue.
I got the Joker singing part if I chose the top right dialogue and the fire drill when I chose the bottom right dialogue

Here's another possibility: maybe Shepard needs to get drunk at Purgatory to get the "invite" dialogue.

Might be a romance thing. I got the "invite" dialog on my last run with an Ashley romance Paragon Shep.
I romanced Ash every time, and only got the Joker singing part.
In fact the only variation I recall is talking to James beforehand gets you the "so that's a no to the eggs" line
