Played ME2 many times, lots of second-playthroughs.  No big problems before, except now. This time, my Mantis will not equip more than 9 rounds. As in, 9 shots. Total. Can't pick up any more, and Reload button doesn't do a thing.  Never done this before on my second-playthroughs, so I think I can safely say it's not just because I'm a vanguard and not normally skilled at sniper rifles until the derelict reaper trap.  How do I fix this, though? It's a pain in the a-word, makes fighting a bit tougher. The pistols and smg's suck damage-wise in this game and always as a vanguard biotic charge is never close enough to hit the target, so sniper rifle just seems the appropriate choice (especially with sneak attacks).

So how the heck do I fix this bug?????

update:  Started new playthrough to see if it just didn't initially load the new game correctly; game repair is good. cryo and incendiary ammo working this time; ammo rounds available for sniper rifle still buggy. Still 9 max capablility.   Any idea why this happens?

Mantis always has 9 rounds max in my games. Widow has 13. Viper has 44. (Can't remember the Incisor cuz I never use it.)

Not sure what you mean?

Mantis should have 10 shots total: 1 clip in the chamber and 9 spare shots. The Spare Ammo armor piece (+10% spare ammo) will not increase the spare ammo from 9 since it is less than 10 (9 + 10% = 9.9, rounded down to 9).

Pistols and SMGs are fine. Pistols gain a damage boost versus armor and SMGs gain a damage boost versus shields and barriers.

Shotguns gain a damage boost versus shields and barriers.

With Charge, you can charge in with a shotgun just fine with most enemies. The Disabled Collector Ship certainly has a few unchargeable enemies, but they are more than manageable.

According to this spreadsheet (assuming it is accurate), clip size should be:

Mantis: 1/9

Viper: 12/48

Widow: 1/12

Incisor: 15/30

Yeah you can't get enough spare ammo increase to get more than 9 spare rounds in the Mantis.

so, it only has room for one clip at a time, then? that's so dumb. I never bothered to look, is the Widow available in 2? or only 3?

Only 1 shot per clip.

They are supposed to be single shot.

As for the Mantis spare ammo issue, it is probably one of the poorest weapon balance decisions in ME2, at least for base game weapons.

I'm not sure about that -- one of the things I really liked about ME2 was how it encouraged you to use ALL of your weapons.  As an Infiltrator, for example, you couldn't snipe everything -- had to reserve sniper shots for priority targets and SMG/Pistol/Incinerate the rest.  Making it 10 base ammo so you actually got a spare ammo wouldn't have changed that but I hardly think it's a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Sure it makes you get out your other weapons, but it also makes the Mantis practically the only early game weapon that doesn't make sense late game since it is outclassed by the other SR's and never gets an upgrade to address the issue.  SMG and Shotguns both get extra rounds.  For Pistols, you can even stick with Predator if you want the ammo capacity and it is pretty interesting with Critical.

Anyway it isn't game breaking or anything, but the rest of the vanilla game weapon balance was about as good as it could have been.

Well, I would argue that some of the assault rifles could really use some balance changes.

The Avenger and Geth Pulse Rifle (and probably the Collector Assault Rifle, I do not have it) could use a base damage increase, about 2-3x the current damage. i would cut the ammo capacity to compensate. For example, if these numbers are accurate, Avenger deals 10.8 damage per shot. It needs to be between 20-30 damage to make it worth using. I would then reduce its current capacity from 40/400 to something like 30/180. Likewise, I would buff the Revenant damage slightly, switch the armor and barriers/shields multipliers (so it does more damage to shields and barriers than it does to armor), and probably reduce the clip size from 80 to 40.

Carnifex could use another 6 spare shots I think, and then reduce the damage to compensate.

Just not sure how to make the Mantis and Widow different enough though to differentiate them. If you keep both as single-shot weapons, maybe increase the damage of the Mantis closer to Widow-like levels so it can reliably one-shot enemies with headshots, and vastly increase the Widow damage so it can one-shot enemies with body shots; and then switch the spare ammo count so the Mantis has 12 and the Widow has 9 (or 10)? Or maybe turn one of them into a two-shot sniper rifle?

I forgot about the GPR.  And I wasn't counting CAR, although I guess it is in some base games.  I downloaded the DLC since they seemed to have given it away for free, but didn't try it.

I don't know about the Avenger or Carnifex though.  Avenger isn't too horrible with upgrades.  It is outclassed by the Revenant, but that is only usable on one class anyway.  The Carnifex would probably completely make the Predator obsolete if it had more spare ammo.

It's only outclassed by the Widow.  I use Mantis over Viper/Incisor on my Infiltrators/Soldiers.
