Don't know if there was a thread about this, or if people even make feedback threads to do anything other than beg for features or whatever.

The previous character portraits were Boring. I love that the devs have noticed that frescoes just work with Dragon Age, and they are an awesome step forward in Dragon Age establishing its own visual identity.

Can someone confirm if these are just placeholders? It seems unlikely that they would create assets for E3 and not use them in the game, but I would hate to get all excited for something that would be replaced anway.

So yeah talk about character portraits.

They don't look like Placeholders, these Portraits haven't really changed (The style anyhow) since the Digiexpo/Pax leak showing. They're about the only piece of the UI design I find universally appealing so I do hope they make it all the way through.

I'm a big fan of them. I just hope we can customize our Inquisitor's portrait in some way- having various symbols aside from just the Inquisition one would be nice.

eh... just like the rest of the UI(which people don't seem to like), it doesn't phase me one way or the other.

At first glance, the thing that jumps out at me is that they're static 2D images.  And I love that.

Because them we should be able to import our own portraits for the Inquisitor.  Unlike DAO, where the character portrait was generated from the actual 3D character model, these look like the static 2D images of old.  I hope that we'll be able to import our own portraits once again.

IMO they are ugly.

I'm really not a fan, since the Inquisitor can't have his or her image, and this creates an incredibly unbalanced appearance.

The portraits are one of the things I'm really digging regarding the UI, of which I'm not such a huge fan. I like that they appear to be 2D art as opposed to a screenshot of the 3D model in a pose. Also like that the Inquisitor's portrait is the Inquisition emblem, but I'm expecting that to change.

They looked pretty lame, and the overall UI just looks so uninspiring. The lack of a portrait for the PC is just another disappointment added to the file.

I expect we'll get to choose from a range of portraits for the Inquisitor.

inb4 they're all just the trademark helmet.

I honestly wouldn't be so optimistic about picking a portrait, but here's to hoping I'm wrong.

Even if that were true, none of them would be at all representative of the Inquisitor - they can't be, because Bioware has no idea what type of character I will design. The best they can do is try to go for some random artists rendition, which might not even match up either hairstyle wise or facial structure wise to what I want.

I was thinking the portrait thing could be a toggle in the UI settings.

I don't have a preference either way, but having an option between the two displays would be nice.

Hence my suggestion that we should be able to import our own (like in BG and NWN).

We had this conversation on the DA:O forum (don't know if you recall), but the gist of my objection to that is that importing also doesn't address the issue, because those portraits are no more my character than a stick figure rendition would be my character.

Anyone wanna post a screenshot of these 'frescoes' for us lazy folk?

What would be your character?  What portrait would satisfy you?

I argue that the portrait is your character as soon as you decide that it is.  This avatar I have here on BSN - that was my BG character portrait.  I will use it again in DAI if I can.

I'm not sure if they are placeholders or not; the Inquisitor's "portrait" made me think that they are. I am a big fan of the frescoes though. They were beautiful in DA2. I guess we'll see.

I'm on the fence. On one hand, I reallllly like it for all the other characters, but I agree it's a bit jarring to see just a symbol and not a person.

With that said, maybe they could do a generic image for a male human/qunari/dwarf/elf and same for female.

I love the frescoes for the companions so much that I'm willing to have a generic icon for the Inquisitor if that's the trade off. If they do end up replacing them all with in-game models, I hope they go the Origins route of giving some of them expressions. I found the portraits in DA2 to be super creepy for some reason.

I prefer the selfie type portrait but if this is the new type of character portrait, then I hope we can customize our own to match our Inquisitor.

There is no portrait that would satisfy me. That's my point: everything would either be a completely unrelated representation, or a poor rendition at best after hours of scrounging around on the internet in the desperate hope I found something that looked like what I wanted to design.

I don't disagree that a portrait could become your character if you decide that it is what your character looks like, but almost no portrait could do that for me.

I do not see how a random picture of a character that looks nothing like mine - and may even be the wrong, say, skin colour - helps versus a symbol.

Given how stylised they are, they probably could just stick an elf face on there, change the skin and hair colour to match and call it a portrait.  You don't need a 1 to 1 relationship of features.  Maybe have a few designs to pick from.

Though I suspect they'll just have an icon

Given how ME2-ME3 had N7 icons for Shepard, it seems that we get the all seeing eye in DAI.
