So looking at the footage from E3, it looks like mages are back to going pew pew while getting their heads smashed in with a mace. I think that's a big step back from DAII where mages used staff melee enhanced by magic for direct combat. Am I correct in assuming it's gone or have I missed something?

If an enemy got too close the mage would smack them with their staff.

Yup. That's what I was talking about.

Are you forgetting about the class dedicated to making a mage a warrior again? I'd say with that inclusion its a good balance.
Plus whats a piece of wood gonna do to someone in armor?

I hear staring your enemies to death is more effective. If that fails, then run away.

To forget about something I would have had to have heard about it in the first place, what class or specialization are we talking about here?
Also Magic Wood.

The Knight Enchanter mage specialization.

From http://www.dragonage...US/classes/mage
Among the Circles of Magi, only a few mages have the strength of will necessary to focus their energy inward. Wrapped in protective magics and wielding blades of arcane force, the Knight Enchanters are rare, but inspiring sights as they lead the charge into enemy ranks.
Because of "wielding blades of arcane force" and "lead the charge" it looks like a melee mage.

I'm still unsure whether it refers to something akin to Mordenkainen's sword or a sword that you'd wield in your hand.

I think the demo was too short to tell anything. I'd like to know as well.
But I agree that if they removed the melee for the ranged classes I'll be sad (bow users had a close range melee as well). It was a great addition, and it made perfect sense.
Plus the staves have magic in them, so it's not like you're just hitting your enemies with a stick. I just hope the mage animations are not back to DAO's style. The auto attack in what we saw in the DAI demo looks like it's the same hand motion over and over again, while in DA2 it felt really active and fun just to use the auto attack.

There was a lot of hate from a particular corner of the internet about the DA2 animations, and it's that corner that Bioware is catering to with DA:I. So I wouldn't be surprised if we went back to the absolutely atrocious DA:O animations for mages.
... As long as we don't go back to that terrible hunched down walk.

Nothing, more likely the wood will break and the mage will be exhausted.
But, Knight-Enchanter is probably the new Arcane Warrrior, and we've been told that any class can equip any armor so long as their stats allow it. So, if we give a mage enough strength maybe they'll be a good fighter?

I would assume the damage of the Knight-Enchanter's weapons and the strength of their protective magics will probably be tied to their intelligence stat, I guess it all depends on how much of a stat investment certain equipment will cost to equip, what benefits the provide and whether or not the stat investment is worth it.
Of course that is me just guessing, I have no idea how the Knight-Enchanter is going to work or what exactly it's role will be.

First off, DAI mage combat is more like DA2 but better. And I'm pretty sure you can still smack enemies with your staff if they get to close.

They seem to avoid the auto/regular attack in the demos....

Though if it is really gone, I expect the Knight Enchanter to fill the role of melee combat, so there is always that.

I hope they bring back the Mage-Warrior thing from Origins. (Arcane Warrior, I think). Or give Mages a Gandalf-like sword and staff combination.
