As of today, the first day of summer, there are 107 days until the release of Dragon Age: Inquisition.

It's rather obvious why we players are anticipating the game's release, but I wonder exactly what the devs get excited about when it comes out.

Consider that they already know the story, the play-style, characters, twists, outcomes, etc. Some may even already be bored with some of it because of their daily tasks involved in getting it published. The VA is relatively new; convo place holders are still being filled with actual voiceovers (as far as I'm aware), things are still being debugged and edited to some extent... All of which bring a little new content for them, but not a lot changes.

Do they get excited about seeing our reviews of their particular contributions? The general consensus of the game's quality? Simply having the work over with? Perhaps even playing the final product? Is it the pride of publishing something that they will be remembered for in the future?

Or is there something else that gets their adrenaline going at launch?

I'm obviously hoping that the devs will jump in here, but I'm also curious to know what the rest of you might answer.

I'd probably say seeing how the world reacts to the game they just poured years of their lives into. That, or being able to sit down and relax for a few minutes... :P

I think, that depends on the Part of the Game the particualr Developer worked on. And then, the Reactions to it.

A Writer might be exited to see if People liked their particular Charatcer and what they thought about him/her.

An Artist might be excited to see, if People like the Games Graphics and such.

And so on, and so on...

One of the developers said that the best part of releasing a game is the relief.

However, relief can mean... many things...

Oh so many....

I would think it would be depended if it pleased EA or Not.

If it did. EA- Very good Bioware, Your continued existence is assured.

if it didn't EA- YOU HAVE FAILED! WE WILL FIND ANOTHER WAY. RELEASING CONTROL.

After the reception of Mass Effect 3 I would imagine the excitement the devs would have felt when releasing a game has been turned to dread.

EA isn't the one sending them death threats if the ending doesn't turn out happy enough

As a software developer, the thing that makes me happy the most is seeing a project launch after a stressful development period. They are times when one could be working on a project for 2 years and at times you actually do hate the project. Codebase is horrible, the tasks become mundane and clients are telling you that they don't like the color of your button.  Watching a project finally launch is a form of relief, however it brings about more work. There is more work in terms of having to maintain the project. After a project is launched the next step is maintaining that project until there is no longer incentive to support it. A good example of this is Windows XP

I think they're tense and hope to be excited about reactions to their game.

It's something they've poured a lot of work and committment into for years, and a lot is riding on it. The future of the DA franchise for instance.

It's interesting that they've poured so much into this. There seem to be a strong effort to make some kind of comeback.

Personally, I suspect they've gambled slightly wrong, and I think they, somewhere, also suspects that, and that is why they're throwing everything into this game, Frostbite, Skyrim open world exploration and Inqusition Tycoon. They don't want to take any chances.

Will it pay off?  I certainly hope so, and I also believe they have thrown enough into this game to make it a genuinely good and interesting game.

So what was that I said about gambling wrong? Well, in a franchise a sequel is always "sold" by the predeccessor. And DA2 isn't good material to follow.

If it had been my money, I would just have killed DA and done something different. Like trying to do another, different "Spiritual Successor to BG" yet again.

So it hangs on if DA:I can get enough distance from DA2. And that is where I suspect Bioware also has made a mistake. What I've seen sofar, makes me think Bioware have decided that everything about DA2 was the right thing, only it wasn't made good enough. So what we'll get is a polished, hi-budget DA2:2, greatly expanded with new technologies. Will that be good enough? I think so. But I don't think it's going to exactly help with distancing itself from DA2.

So I think the developers are going to be exited about the reactions to DA:I. Will they have pulled it off?

Probably depends on their department

Like, I think the writers get excited when they see fans happily talking about/quoting bits of dialogue they had a hand in writing. It's always a nice feeling to have your work praised.

I bet they're most excited about being able to relax, and then I'm sure they're also very nervous about everyone's reactions (especially those of the hard core fans, but that might just be my self-importance talking).

Hopefully our trusty Allan will still be around during that time to give us some insight onto how they're all doing.

I can only imagine. Eat a lot. Sleep. Eat some more. Sleep. Repeat. Not live, eat sleep and breathe DAI for once. Putting myself in those shoes, waiting for feedback would make me sick to my stomach.
