How customized can future ME games go?

A list of what I'd love to see in future RPG games.

  • Dynamically changing armor that show dents when shot or clothing that show rips or burns upon damage. Not just in cut-scenes.
  • Grow hair/beard/moustache/sideburns over the course of the game and allow players to shave/haircut/trim at a base location or in the privacy of their home/room.
  • Apply tattoos or remove them at a base location.
  • Change hairstyles throughout the game. Limited changes in a bathroom, but completely new hairstyles at a barber/hair salon.
  • Re-apply makeup/change makeup throughout the game. Change nail polish color.
  • Ability to purchase clothing, shoes, jewelry and wear them at will.
  • Personality affecting fidgets and movement. More than just renegade or paragon options chosen at the beginning of the game. Something more real and organic that's based on player choices. I'm looking for attitude that comes through even when player isn't controlling the character.
  • Ability to personalize space ... expanded. I like the knick knacks Shepard collects, but I'd like more! Change linens, add paint color, see that toothbrush on the sink. Add décor that suits the players tastes.
  • Especially difficult mission where the protagonist got clocked? Show that hole in the mouth where his/her tooth got knocked out. (Ability to repair in medical bay/hospital/dentist). Show the dislocated nose. Show the bruises and cuts. Show the character limping, or nursing that shoulder/hand/elbow etc... Or does medi-gel grow new teeth and bone?

You get the idea. I know MEU games are not simulations, but why not add more simulation elements to the game? Role-playing to its natural destiny.

I'm sure Bioware would like to add more immersion for sure. The question is if their EA overlords would allow the extra expenditure. :P

Personally, I'm all for a more personal touch, but I'm also a realist ( pessimist ) and know it probably won't happen. Unfortunately.

I think RPG games will evolve in this direction and if there's a company that will push that evolution forward it's Bioware. I'd like to think EA wants innovation, but you are right. Bioware, as an independent studio, has a better chance to make outside the rigid box of "known formula" creativity if they didn't have to get permission from a publisher. Any publisher, not just EA.

Being able to change the appearance of my hair/facial hair/accessories/makeup throughout the game would be a nice start.

I'm not a fan of makeup but some of the more unconventional Asari makeup styles like the speckled or swirly eyebrows and the Queen Amidala lip thing would be a cool addition. I would also love to see some war paint options for the face and scalp. Maybe something similar to what Turians have going on. And for the love of badass, could we please have: 1. afros in several sizes and 2. a few mohawk styles -- and I'm not talking about the clean, conventional type but the chunky, Fallout 3, mo-I-partially-shaved-my-head-without-looking-in-the-mirror-hawk style -- for both male and female characters. And, since we're dreaming, I also want animated dreads, facial tattoos, full-on Grizzly Adams beards, eye patches, monocles, braided goatees... Air Jordans. A companion animal would be nice as well.

Being able to change hair/accessories would certainly be a welcome addition (God knows, I've had to bring out the tactical beard now and then), but a full growing mechanic would probably be too much of a hassle to program into the game for what little payoff it would give. Not to mention the hassle it would be for me to be constantly shaving (it's annoying enough in real life).

The same could be said for weathering armor; it's a nice effect but not really worth the extra time on Bioware's end.

Weathering the body on the other hand, would be super nice. While I wouldn't be too keen about getting a bruise every time I took a blow to the head, I think it it would add a bit more weight to every choice if there was a possibility I would have to look an some ugly scar for the rest of the game (and some equally ugly decrease in my stats).

But beyond just player choice, I think giving this customization to squad mates would really make the world feel alive. I'd love to see a squad mate walking around in a new outfit they just found shopping, or a new trophy hanging on their wall, or possibly even a beard inexplicably grown on my first mate's face.

Too many RPGs worry so much about how the player customizes their character as the game progresses, they forget that the NPCs that follow them are people too. Bioware has done an exceptional job avoiding that (if not, the most exceptional job in RPG history), and all I can hop is that they consider the personalization of our squadmates tantamount to the personalization of ourselves.

Is it too much to ask for sideburns to connect the hair on your head and your beard?

Fully customizable starship. That's where it's at.

At the very least, the mirror in DA2 showed Bioware how much its fans like the option to modify their character appearance in game.

I'd love to see that in ME.

I think they should just chuck Paragon and Renegade though.

Make it more like Dragon age, where your squadmates each think differently about you based on your actions and can leave if they dont like what you do.

I assume this means the external appearance as well as the inside. I actually would have no problem with this, though it really depends on the setting and the story. If the protagonist is yet another leader of a military vessel, then customization of the outside, or even a lot of the inside, would be a no-no.

Of course, being able to select from a number of Cerberus-branded armors does make ME3 a little weird.

Some dude/gal posted a link one here once to a game of which I have forgotten the name... but I remember I wanted to play that game solely for it's character creator. That stuff was magic. I think it was something Korean

*googles*

LOOK AT THAT.

Doesn't that make you excited or what?

The thing I worry about the most as character creators become more advanced and games are better at handling the animation, is the sheer amount of time I will squander out of my life screwing around with it.

Oh yeah... definetly. I'll spend more time in there than I'll actually be playing the game, most likely.

I personally want BioWare to reintroduce an inventory system and with that enhance the crafting system so that you upgrade weapons and armor sets/mods by crafting materials/parts you find by exploring/looting or with unique items you find at different stores or from quest rewards. Building your own weapons and armor sets either from collectable blueprints or mixing and matching pre-sets would be fun/rewarding as long as it's not overly complicated and the resource requirements aren't onerous/too grind-y or at worst dependent on random number generation.

Personally i'm in the camp that i'd rather the focus of any micromanagement to be on player/squad armor/weapons that have a direct impact on gameplay, though you do raise an interesting idea - namely damage (deterioration) to player armor/weapons and repair. Armor condition/damage threshold could be separated from player health/medigel imo because the current system makes no sense. The downsize to having better armors should be that it costs more to maintain them. I hope bioWare also reintroduce the idea of the upgradeable/customizable omni-tool and the biotic-amp so while gun nuts (soldiers) can focus on building cool looking arsenal sets/mods, adepts and engineers can focus their money and playtime on tech upgrades in order to become biotic and tech gods with the other classes somewhere in between. Imagine trading-in loot for more Savant amp I-X upgrades and materials... how cool would that be?

First thoughts are the variety of body types shown in that video make you appreciate the limitations of unreal engine tech... if the new physics tools allow for much more variety in character models with fluid movement styles the possibilities are exiting in ways that aren't immediately obvious. The character creation screen looks a bit too much like a 3d modelling tool in terms of it's depth to complexity ratio but again it makes you appreciate how limited the options are even in me3 by comparison. Ive tried recreating various people in all of the mass effect games but the character customization options were just so stilted compared to games like saints row that I just gave up out of frustration. Hopefully the new games character creation options will be advanced enough for me or somebody better at this kind of thing to recreate sheploo which would be nice every now and again just for old times sake.
