Time.

It got me thinking about the games I play and enjoy. After all I have been playing for a good part of my life. Looking back, I think that a lot of things have made me the man I am today one of them being : games(this works for all of us I guess). The games I have played have surely done their part, because they are the cause of why I began my own journey making games.

During my teen years, the games went straight into fantasy, Baldurs Gate, Never Winter, Warcraft, Icewindale, and so forth. Everyone was making those kinds of games. Still a few “space games” where cool enough, such as Total Annihilation (this game was not cool this game was flawless) Imperium Galactica, Master of Orion, Sword of the Stars, but these games where usually done by studios with not enough backlog, therefore the features where often silly or pale in comparison with the fantasy games. –Granted. These games where mostly another type all together (most of them) but the stories where not developed in the same awe inspiring fashion.-

But that’s not the whole story. Since I was a kid (born on the ’86) I always watched Star Wars, that opened my world into Space Operas, and Sci Fi. (Unfortunately I never got a hold of Star Trek because they never showed them on the channels of my country, nowadays I have seen every space Opera, BUT Start Trek –the series-).

Anyhow, when I first saw Mass Effect I got connected to the game at once. This game reconnected me with my Sci Fi roots. And I love it. I must have played hundreds of hours in the trilogy. And I have enjoyed every bit of it.

So, what has ME done for me?

A few years back I created a small company, which hopefully will create games at least half as inspiring as Mass Effect. The compelling stories, the intricate universe the outstanding development everything is outstanding.

So to cut the thread shorter: thank you to all the Mass Effect Team. Old crew and new crew. Casey Hudson, and everyone on his team.

Just to mention a few Jos Hendriks, Jay Watamaniuk, Manveer Heir, and so many more.

  • I’m sorry to everyone I don’t mention on the post.
  • I’m also sorry if I sound like a fan boy, heck, maybe I am. And glad to be one if so.
  • Finally I wish the whole BWM team keeps producing awesome stuff for decades to come.

Mass Effect 2 actually made me enjoy games, films and tv series in a very different way, a more enlightened way. For example, I never cared for soundtrack, yet after all the utterly brilliant tracks of ME2's OST I start doing that for everything.

So Mass Effect 2 was a big deal to me, and in consequence the whole trilogy.

I grew up on fantasy genre computer games. ME has brought me out of my gaming comfort zone.

I always assumed I'd just suck at shooters, and for some reason I was always under the impression sci fi shooters would not be as story-driven as my favorite fantasy games, and were just focused on mindlessly blasting things into gory bits. ME showed me I don't suck at shooters, and how my prejudice kept me from trying out alot of other big titles.

ME is still very unique for its genre (which is why I'm psyched about ME4) but it has made me more open-minded and more confident about gaming.

The franchise gave me years of gaming fun and it continues to do so. It helped me be a better fps player and it rocked my Role Playing gamer world.

When I'm old, toothless, demented, and ready to die - Mention Commander Shepard.  Just the name will spark some life back into me.

Best gaming experience ever.

It made me hopeful that at some point in the future, preferably while I'm still around, someone with an exorbitant amount of money will take ME games, Babylon 5, and Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End and think, "You know what, I have an idea." He or she will finally get it right. I can feel it.

Mass Effect 1 was the the first XBox 360 game where I genuinely thought I was playing a next gen game. Granted, a lot of the 360 games that I owned at the time looked better than most of my PS2 games but I had never played anything like Mass Effect before, I knew I was playing something that could not have been done on a PS2. The game just screamed ambition and made me hopeful for the future of gaming in general.

Mass Effect 2 took everything that I loved about the first game, made it better and fixed/got rid of the things I hated. Mass Effect 2 was fun to play ( I liked ME1 but I did not have fun playing it if that makes any sense ), it also made me worship Bioware as if they were gods, to me they could do no wrong. To me ME2 was the best game I had ever played up until that point in time.

Mass Effect 3 ruined the trilogy for me ( needless to say I no longer hold ME2 in any regard after ME3 ). I was so disgusted by ME3 that I stopped gaming for 4 or so months, even today my passion for my favourite hobby is a fraction of what it used to be. I have also become very bitter and jaded, some might even say hostile to games, game developers, game publishers and EA in general.

So, what has ME done for me?

It made me realize the destination is far more important than the journey. I'm not a story writer or anything, but when I do come up with an idea for something, I make sure the ending is constructed first & everything else is structured around it. Storytelling is like an investment to the reader/view, and like any investor, they'll want to make sure the investment was worth it.

Another thing that ME has done for me was to bring me joy & then take it away. The ME series is the ONLY series that made me feel empty after everything was concluded. Everything I looked forward to, all the countless hours invested, all a waste. After ME3, I couldn't go back and play ME/ME2 despite me playing those games millions upon millions of times - somehow hoping my choices would matter in the end. Oh well... I never been the same since.

It taught me to not pre-order and to wait until some time after release to make sure that the game is in a fit state.

I loved ME1 from the get go and ME2 grew on me.  But ME3's ending was... well, let's just say I was in the cup-cake brigade.

Mass Effect 1 made me believe that video games projects could go beyond the scope of one game, ME2 made me accept that if it could be done it would be with a cost and probably less ambition, ME3 demonstrated that such ambitions couldn't be done in these days and age as it wouldn't be supported by this industry's bean counters (I'm still wondering what ME2/DA2/ME3 would have been with a proper development time).

It also taught me that a company resume isn't enough to put your money on the table and that you can't trust a reviewer about a game that last more than 5 hours.

I'm thankful for hours of fun even if it ended in disillusion.

Space and exploration and astronomy.

Mass Effect renewed my love for all these things. I wanted to be an astronaut as a kid but lost sight of that. To have that love rekindled by "some game" meant so much to me.

Mass Effect taught me the true meaning of "caveat emptor"

It's inspired a lot of my art and some writing, as well as rekindling my affection for video games. I was pretty much on a dry spell for a while until I finally broke down and bought a PS3 a couple years ago.

It affected me. It affected my gaming life. It sort of...put it on pause.

I've not played a game like ME before, and the expectations that 1 & 2 caused me to feel for games was stalled with 3. I've felt...disconnected from gaming ever since. I feel like I'll not find another franchise with this much depth, flavor, and immersion. I also feel like I'll never get the satisfaction and closure from the franchise I feel I need.

I feel stuck in a loop where I keep hoping something will break me out of it...but I don't find it. I feel, on pause, and there's no play button to be pushed.

ME taught me how to appreciate good storytelling more. To this day, if the game has no meat then I just ignore it unless its a fighting game

I came from an FPS PC background, and avoided RPGs and tactical games, cause I just liked shooting stuff.  When I saw the ME1 commercial on TV I was intrigued.  Hmmm, shooter+RPG elements+space magic = teh win!!

Yep, although it did take a bit of getting used to the dialogue and response choices, I eventually warmed up that part of the game as well.

I know BW made mistakes along the way—including the initial ending of ME3 which left so many of us feeling empty and without any closure to Shep's story—but despite all of that I still appreciate all three games, the characters we've come to know and love (or hate), and the hours and hours of gameplay, and lastly I too have bought some goodies from the BW store and it's always nice to have someone recognize my N7 wear and say "Hey N7!!".

Overall, being someone who has done enough criticizing, I have enoyed all three games, and really forward to the next.  Thanks BW for all the things you did right, and hopefully you have learned from whatever you did not.  :)

Long story short, its made me happy.

Also while the ending wasnt what i wanted, it certainly didnt scar me or ruin mass effect for me. After completing the ending for the first time i just sat there for about 5 minutes staring at my screen in disappointment and then proceeded to start up ME1 and start all over from where i began.

When ME 2 came around it taught me the lesson that i should never get exited about some things because they always turn out to dissapoint me - now i live without any hope for the game business and that has set me free.

I'm amazed by how many BSNers complain about how utterly disappointing ME was to them, and yet, they are here, making thousands of posts about it with the rest of us. You cannot let go. ME has done more than disappoint you, it has locked you in an inescapable love for the game. embrace eternity yo

Don't forget they'll never buy a BioWare product again.

Yet the activity on the forums exploded after a 2 minute vid with mostly real life people talking in it.

More like love for potential it had, and crushing disappointment with what was done with that potential.

I've learned that you have to take just about anything negative said on this forum, especially the hyperbolic comments, with a HEAVY grain of salt.
