I should point out that I originally thought we were just going to be playing a Vashoth who had left the Qun and was now a free agent trying to make their way in the world, which meant that the majority of their background would be covered by what we know about the Qun, but then I was told on these forums that the Devs had said you were never in the Qun but born Vashoth. This is why I started giving it some thought because it wasn't so straight forward.
I like the idea above, that two qunari fled together, may be because they weren't going to be allowed to be partners under the system, and eventually wound up somewhere, like the Freemarches, where they felt reasonably safe from the Qun and there might be opportunities to make a living. That would indeed mean that they would probably have been taught a fair bit about what their parents fled from but could still choose to embrace it again themselves if they wished.
That still leaves the problem of a mage child though. Would the parents have been able to overcome their ingrained fear of mages as instilled by their former culture? It is not as though living among the human culture of the majority of Thedas would be help allay their fears, more likely reinforce them. So that suggests the Vashoth mage has probably spent sometime in the Circle, although that is not to say they didn't escape at some point.
Thanks for the input. I'm getting ideas straight in my head now in case we are meant to pretty much decide it for ourselves. I probably won't play a Vashoth straight off but you never know.
