Yeah, that's the picture I had in mind, I was just too lazy to go looking for it. Thanks for doing my work for me.

Pretty much this. Some players freak out when they think the writers favor a particular character.
To be fair, I can understand their viewpoint. If you liked, well... pretty much any character other than Liara more than Liara, then she presents a very clear focus on which you can project your hate for the inferior treatment of your favourite character.
Liara did get a lot of screentime in ME3, no sense denying that. And I would love it if she got twice the amount of it. But a lot of people are not like me and they understandably get a little pissed off by it. I just think that Liara is not a proper focal point for their rage. It should be directed at writers, but they are much more insubstantial than the character herself. So, in the end, we are settled with stuff we regularly get on BSN when Liara's name gets brought up.
@Ryriena Mac didn't write her Drew did in ME1 and Patrick Weekes (I think) in LOTSB).
On-topic its that people hate her, its that she has inconsistant character development and is focrced into certain plots just for the sake of having her in it.
Wasn't Liara written by Sylvia Feketekuty in LOTSB and ME3?
Yeah thanks for correcting me. ![]()
Yeah thanks for correcting me.
Well, this is awkward. I thought I edited my post before anyone saw it!
I guess she has too much screen time and is probably the strongest squadmate (at least in ME3 because of warp, ME1 if I recall she doesn't have fitness so for Insanity I didn't bother). If you don't care much for her she feels like you are forced to play along. I just wish the rest had the same level of treatment.
The change in her personality from ME1 to ME2 is pretty big too and inconsistent at times ranging from caring to cold to revengeblinded and back again (and no I'm not talking about the benezia wannabe scene). ;p

I have no problems with Liara being more important than the other squad members. However, I wish there was more versatility in her relationship with Shepard. Wrex, the VS, and others can become friends or almost enemies of Shepard depending on Shepard's choices. Liara seems to love Shepard no matter which choices Shepard makes. Also, aside from the romance lock-in point, conversations with Liara might as well be auto-dialogued because dialogue choice seems inconsequential. ME is all about player choice, and Liara's relationship with Shepard just kinda felt un-Mass Effect-like to me.
The short answer is: she is favored by the writers.
Pretty much this.
I don't necessarily hate the character, I play my Shepard as being close friends with her, but I still have a sour taste in my mouth from the "my girl" remark in ME3, not to mention assumed predispositions. Take for instance the difference between meeting Garrus to meeting Liara in ME2. Liara gets a hug right away but Garrus does not, I know it was a different situation but come on I would've hugged him.
It's actually quite easy for people to end up not liking her specifically because she's a writer's pet, it can lead to nonsensical or flat out bad writing because they want her to be there, they want her to be important and useful and the focus of attention, seemingly forgetting that not everyone will feel the same. At the very least, not everyone's Shepard will feel the same way about Liara.
And no, Aethyta, my in-love-with-Samara Shepard does not send looks back and forth with Liara that set their panties on fire.
Uncomfortable.
he has underwear on in the shower, I mean really Mac?
If that pisses you off you should see Dragon Age Origin's ''sex'' scenes.
Liara gets a hug right away but Garrus does not, I know it was a different situation but come on I would've hugged him.
Well, Liara did save Shepard.
Garrus went off to play Batman.
I felt like Liara became way too clingy in ME3. Even when you weren't romancing her. It even felt that a romance was forced on me a little (Mars mission when you first see her again).
I think that she seemed to develop her own personality and independence in Mass Effect 2 which was fine, but then as soon as Shepard gets back on the scene in ME3, a lot of that seemed to be lost. She became another limb of Shepard rather than an individual.
That and she seemed to get more screen time with Shepard than Tali did, and Tali was the love interest!
Because we have enough of her!!! She is a good girl, but she is all over the place. By the Goddes - No more T'soni.
Liara and Shepard's baby for ME 4 protagonist!

That also bugged me. BIG time.
But other than that I really like her as a character. I just wish the writers had shared their love to the other characters.
Well, Liara did save Shepard.
Garrus went off to play Batman.
Which, considering the end result, is appreciated but:
1) My Shepard hates Cerberus and waking up to them was a nightmare, working with them gave her a lot of **** to unpack later including added guilt to her nightmares about Akuze
2) Garrus, screwed up as it was, went away to do something with himself. He accepted that Shepard was dead in as much as he didn't go looking for her ice cold %100 dead corpse and give it to a really shady organization to bring her back to life.
I'm just saying my Shepard would have also hugged Garrus.
Rational answer: Overexposed (this despite sitting out most of ME2) and wildly inconsistent character. She's a... fake character in that I don't buy her as a badass or a combat worthy person. Even starting with ME2 before the other games there was something I just couldn't buy into in regards to her character. She tries to be series all the time yet comes off as a bufoon out of her element. ME1 Liara was perfect and ME2 started well until the Shadow Broker stuff came up. Her vendetta with the Yahg was stupid; "I'm gonna kill this guy cause he kidnapped a guy who helped me by betraying him!" Garrus was more justified in being pissed off. So was Jacob upon reuniting with Ronald. But Liara? It's like some angsty prep schoolgirl is mad because her teacher gave her an F. I also can't stand her tone of voice in ME3. Like her voice actress is overdoing the "loud whisper" and you can hear it in her voice. Ridiculous.
Various and sundry reasons, none of which matter.
Garrus went off to play Batman.
THE PUNISHER.
Batman doesn't kill, and he uses stealth and deception to crush his enemies with his fists.
THE PUNISHER kills criminals without mercy and utilizes ambushes and guns. People need to get out of that Garrus = Batman shizz.
For me, I don't hate the character so much as how she's been handled. Her development has been inconsistent. The transition from blushing awkward archeologist to ruthless information broker was abrupt and hard to credit. She's also sort of shoehorned in as Shepard's best friend no matter what you do in ME3.
The main reason why I hate her is because she was forced down my throat from day one. Because she causes inconsistencies, like, no matter how mean my Shepard was to her and how much he ignored her, they still hug like they're *barf* in love, in ME2. And that stupid moment on Mars when Shepard sees her and goes all like Liara *_* :3 ![]()
Besides all that, I also find her incredibly annoying and dull as a character. And I do ignore her and sometimes I forget she exists...until, BAM, there she is again, forced on me.
Look, I have no problem with people liking her and stuff. That's nice. Good for them. I wouldn't have a problem with her either if I could avoid her completely. Like tell her to get off my ship, or better yet, kill the ******.

Another thing that bothers me about Liara is that she seems to receive all the credit for saving Shepard. Miranda and TIM were at least as responsible for Shepard's resurrection, if not more so. However, if Liara does deserve sole credit for saving Shepard then she deserves credit for everything Project Lazarus did. Including creating a clone which tried to kill Shepard, Liara and the entire Normandy crew. Therefore, Liara both saved Shepard and tried to kill Shepard. Now that's logic!

You can't ressurect a body you don't have.

T'soni didn't save Shepard. Its hard to save someone who's already dead. She did give the body to Cerberus after Feron led her to where his/her corpse could be found.
